The recent mathematical formalization of the concepts of matter and extrinsical energy, which are used for the relational representation of biological systems, is employed in the analysis of the important experimental discoveries of Comorosanet al. related to low energy electromagnetic irradiations on enzyme substrates. By means of the present analysis one of the properties inherent to the experimental phenomena is more precisely exposed, and theoretical developments corresponding to “energetical evolutions” in a biological system (Leguizamón, 1976) may now have an experimental basis. Important limitations are introduced for the validity of the commutativity and associativity of cartesian product of sets, when they represent matter and its linked extrinsical energy. In connection with this last aspect, new important knowledge is obtained for the relational mathematical representation of biological systems.  相似文献

Bledius (Elbidus) bicornis (Germ.) and B. (Eucerotobledius) furcatus (Oliv.) (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) are the most important burrowing species in the emergent areas and shores in the athalassic lake of Fuente de Piedra (Málaga, S. of Spain). A first estimate of the importance of these organisms in this system is presented. These insects kick out sediment during their burrowing activity, which accumulates on the surface near the burrows as tumuli which can be easily eroded. The lake perimeter (17 km) is densely colonized (usual densities from 1700 to 2500 ind m−2). The amount of granulated material that can be potentially kicked out was 46.22 g dry wt m−2 day−1. At the same time, the material that constitutes the tumuli shows different characteristics from the compact ground below the surface. Thus, it is relatively enriched with organic matter (6.15 g per square meter), soluble phosphate (406.5 μg m−2) and ammonium (4856 μg m−2), whereas it lacks nitrate. Results of a transect from uninhabited areas to zones of maximum population density also show a similarity between the higher ground level of ammonium and phosphate concentrations and population density.  相似文献

The metabolism of lactate in isolated cells from early neonatal rat brain has been studied. In these circumstances, lactate was mainly oxidized to CO2, although a significant portion was incorporated into lipids (78% sterols, 4% phosphatidylcholine, 2% phosphatidylethanolamine, and 1% phosphatidylserine). The rate of lactate incorporation into CO2 and lipids was higher than those found for glucose and 3-hydroxybutyrate. Lactate strongly inhibited glucose oxidation through the pyruvate dehydrogenase-catalyzed reaction and the tricarboxylic acid cycle while scarcely affecting glucose utilization by the pentose phosphate pathway. Lipogenesis from glucose was strongly inhibited by lactate without relevant changes in the rate of glycerol phosphate synthesis. These results suggest that lactate inhibits glucose utilization at the level of the pyruvate dehydrogenase-catalyzed reaction, which may be a mechanism to spare glucose for glycerol and NADPH synthesis. The effect of 3-hydroxybutyrate inhibiting lactate utilization only at high concentrations of 3-hydroxybutyrate suggests that before ketogenesis becomes active, lactate may be the major fuel for the neonatal brain. (-)-Hydroxycitrate and aminooxyacetate markedly inhibited lipogenesis from lactate, suggesting that the transfer of lactate carbons through the mitochondrial membrane is accomplished by the translocation of both citrate and N-acetylaspartate.  相似文献

Summary The oxidation of Ca–Mg lactate to Ca–Mg acetate (CMA) deicing salt was studied in pure cultures ofAcetobacter pasteurianus, Gluconobacter cerinus orG. oxydans. Antibodies to tubulin were prepared in rabbits by immunization with reduced-carboxymethylated calf-brain tubulin. In immunodiffusion tests the antibodies showed full cross reactivity with the immunogen as well as with native calf-brain tubulin. The same antibodies showed cross reactivity with a factor in extract of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cotyledons but there was no full immunological identity between calf-brain tubulin and this factor. A solid-phase radioimmunoassay for quantitative estimation of this plant tubulin-like factor was developed. It measured the binding of antibodies to immobilized calf-native tubulin. Competition between the unknown soluble tubulin-like factor, and immobilized tubulin was assayed at serum dilution of 1:50. Extraction conditions which preserved the antigenic properties of the tubulin-like factor from cotton cotyledons were defined. The radioimmunoassay measured quantities of the tubulin-like factor in the range of 0.1–10 g-equivalents of calf-brain tubulin. Immediately after homogenization of the tissue only 25% of the total amount of tubulin-like activity was present in soluble form, while most of it remained in the insoluble fraction. Apparent maximal solubilization was achieved spontaneously 10 h after homogenization or by treatment with guanidine hydrochloride. These results indicate that in this material, tubulin is not released immediately by homogenization but remains assembled in microtubules and-or in a bound or sequestered form.Abbreviations NRS normal rabbit serum - RCM reduced-carboxymethylated  相似文献

Pretreatment by darkness increased chilling (4°C) injuryin whole cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) seedlings and isolatedcotyledonary tissue. Addition of sucrose in the dark periodprevented the effect of darkness. Application of the photosyntheticinhibitor DCMU in light simulated the effect of darkness. ABA(10–5 M) decreased chilling injury when applied in lightas a pretreatment before the onset of chilling. The same pretreatmentin darkness was almost ineffective, unless sucrose was added.ABA applied in light together with DCMU was ineffective in decreasingchilling injury. Lower light intensity resulted in increasedchilling injury and a decreased effect of ABA in the preventionof chilling injury. The antimicrotubular drug colchicine increased the chillinginjury. Pretreatment with ABA in light decreased the chillingand colchicine injury while the same pretreatment in darknesswas ineffective. These results suggest that a deficiency of a photosyntheticproduct increases the chilling sensitivity of the tissue. To determine the usefulness of R-wave amplitude changes during exercise testing for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) and to understand the discrepancies that have been described in the literature regarding their value, we studied two groups of patients by means of electrocardiographic (EKG) treadmill testing and coronary arteriography. Group I was composed of 149 patients who were studied prospectively. The specificity of R-wave changes measured from preexercise to immediately postexercise (SRV(5)) was 81%, but that of R-wave changes measured from preexercise to peak exercise (URV(5)) was 46%. A group of 156 patients (Group II) evaluated retrospectively showed a high specificity for the SRV(5) (84%) and poor specificity for the URV(5) (39%). The sensitivity of the SRV(5) was 38% in Group I and 42% in Group II. Therefore, if measured during the immediate postexercise period and not at peak exercise, changes in R-wave amplitude may be of value in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease by electrocardiographic exercise testing.  相似文献

Interactions between normal human peripheral blood T lymphocytes and monocytes were investigated by measuring the in vitro cellular adherence of these cells in the presence and in the absence of mitogens. Concanavalin A (Con A), lentil lectin (Lc), and phytohemagglutinin (PHA) in mitogenic doses increased 15 to 20 times the binding of T lymphocytes to monocytes. The lectin-induced binding was similar to that produced by neuraminidase-gal-actose-oxidase treatment. A good correlation was found between the early cellular adherence induced by these lectins and by neuraminidase-galactose-oxidase and the blastogenesis of the T lymphocytes measured after 3 days of culture by [3H]thymidine uptake. However, wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), a nonmitogenic lectin, also increased the binding of T lymphocytes to monocytes. Addition of specific carbohydrates completely inhibited the cellular interactions induced by lectins. Peanut agglutinin (PNA) induced adherence of lymphocytes only after treatment of these cells with neuraminidase. Striking differences were not found between the lectin-induced adherence observed with autologous and heterologous cells. Killing of monocytes abolished entirely the lectin-induced adherence of lymphocytes, however killed T lymphocytes were still able to interact weakly with live monocytes. Dexamethasone was found to be a potent inhibitor of mitogen-induced cellular interactions.  相似文献

Summary A total of 242 metaphase plates from the peripheral blood of Nubian males living near Aswan, Egypt were studied with respect to the length of the Y chromosome and its location in metaphase spreads. The length of the Y was similar to that found in American Negroes, and the Y chromosome was peripherally located in 79 of the 242 cells.  相似文献
