Purpose

Social life cycle assessment (SLCA) is a methodology under continuous development, which may be applied at different scales: from products to economic sectors up to systems at region (meso) and country (macro) scales. Traditionally, SLCA has been focusing on the assessment of negative social externalities, whereas also positive social impacts could be associated to human interventions. The purpose of the present study is to understand how positive impacts are defined in published literature and how they could be assessed through indicators. The aim is to clarify the concept among scholars and to support decision making in business and policy context.

Methods

The study uses a systematic review approach in order to analyse the types of indicators adopted. In the field of SLCA and according to Paragahawewa et al. (2009), “[I]ndicators are ‘pointers’ to the state of the impact categories (and/or subcategories) being evaluated by the SLCA”. Indicators can be quantitative, semi-quantitative or qualitative (UNEP/SETAC 2009). This review was carried out in order to identify and analyse positive impacts and indicators. After careful scrutiny, 47 papers containing theoretical frameworks were considered, as well as 46 papers presenting case studies.

Results and discussion

Compared to environmental life cycle assessment (E-LCA), where the presence of positive impacts is lower, evaluating benefits or positive impacts can still play a major role in SLCA (Benoît et al. 2010). A quarter of the analysed papers on theoretical frameworks take into account the topic of positive impacts and indicators. Results from case study analysis highlight as “workers”, was the most considered stakeholder (in 100 % of the analysed papers), and as the majority of positive indicators used in the case study analysed are recorded in relation to “other value chain actors”. Within the concept of “positive impacts”, no reference should be made merely to the utility of a product or service. In a broader sense, we could refer to solutions improving the conditions of one or various stakeholders involved. In other words, these are solutions that carry a positive contribution to one or more stakeholders without harming others.

Conclusions

So far, positive impacts are barely covered in literature. There is a clear need of streamlining definition and indicators, especially if they should be applied in a policy context complementing traditional—and often monetary-based, cost-benefit analysis (CBA).

Eicosanoids play a crucial role in inflammatory pain. However, there is very little knowledge about the contribution of oxidized linoleic acid metabolites in inflammatory pain and peripheral sensitization. Here, we identify 12,13-dihydroxy-9Z-octadecenoic acid (12,13-DiHOME), a cytochrome P450-derived linoleic acid metabolite, as crucial mediator of thermal hyperalgesia during inflammatory pain. We found 12,13-DiHOME in increased concentrations in peripheral nervous tissue during acute zymosan- and complete Freund's Adjuvant-induced inflammatory pain. 12,13-DiHOME causes calcium transients in sensory neurons and sensitizes the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1)-mediated intracellular calcium increases via protein kinase C, subsequently leading to enhanced TRPV1-dependent CGRP-release from sensory neurons. Peripheral injection of 12,13-DiHOME in vivo causes TRPV1-dependent thermal pain hypersensitivity. Finally, application of the soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH)-inhibitor TPPU reduces 12,13-DiHOME concentrations in nervous tissue and reduces zymosan- and CFA-induced thermal hyperalgesia in vivo. In conclusion, we identify a novel role for the lipid mediator 12,13-DiHOME in mediating thermal hyperalgesia during inflammatory pain and propose a novel mechanism that may explain the antihyperalgesic effects of sEH inhibitors in vivo.  相似文献

Maximum rooting depth of vegetation types at the global scale   总被引:37,自引:0,他引:37  
The depth at which plants are able to grow roots has important implications for the whole ecosystem hydrological balance, as well as for carbon and nutrient cycling. Here we summarize what we know about the maximum rooting depth of species belonging to the major terrestrial biomes. We found 290 observations of maximum rooting depth in the literature which covered 253 woody and herbaceous species. Maximum rooting depth ranged from 0.3 m for some tundra species to 68 m for Boscia albitrunca in the central Kalahari; 194 species had roots at least 2 m deep, 50 species had roots at a depth of 5 m or more, and 22 species had roots as deep as 10 m or more. The average for the globe was 4.6±0.5 m. Maximum rooting depth by biome was 2.0±0.3 m for boreal forest. 2.1±0.2 m for cropland, 9.5±2.4 m for desert, 5.2±0.8 m for sclerophyllous shrubland and forest, 3.9±0.4 m for temperate coniferous forest, 2.9±0.2 m for temperate deciduous forest, 2.6±0.2 m for temperate grassland, 3.7±0.5 m for tropical deciduous forest, 7.3±2.8 m for tropical evergreen forest, 15.0±5.4 m for tropical grassland/savanna, and 0.5±0.1 m for tundra. Grouping all the species across biomes (except croplands) by three basic functional groups: trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants, the maximum rooting depth was 7.0±1.2 m for trees, 5.1±0.8 m for shrubs, and 2.6±0.1 m for herbaceous plants. These data show that deep root habits are quite common in woody and herbaceous species across most of the terrestrial biomes, far deeper than the traditional view has held up to now. This finding has important implications for a better understanding of ecosystem function and its application in developing ecosystem models.  相似文献

A combination of cytogenetic and molecular biology techniques were used to study the molecular composition and organisation of the pericentromeric regions of house mouse metacentric chromosomes, the products of Robertsonian (Rb) translocations between telocentrics. Regardless of whether mitotic or meiotic preparations were used, in situ hybridisation failed to reveal pericentromeric telomeric sequences on any of the Rb chromosomes, while all metacentrics retained detectable, although reduced (average 50 kb), amounts of minor satellite DNA in the vicinity of their centromeres. These results were supported by slot blot hybridisation which indicated that mice with 2n=22 Rb chromosomes have 65% of telomeric sequences (which are allocated to the distal telomeres of both Rb and telocentric chromosomes and to the proximal telomeres of telocentrics) and 15% the amount of minor satellite, compared with mice with 2n=40 all-telocentric chromosomes. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis and Southern analysis of DNA from Rb mice showed that the size of the telomeric arrays is similar to that of mice with all-telocentric chromosomes and that the minor satellite sequences were hybridising to larger fragments incorporating major satellite DNA. Since the telomeric sequences are closer to the physical end of the chromosome than the minor satellite sequences, the absence of telomeric sequences and the reduced amount of minor satellite sequences at the pericentromeric region of the Rb metacentrics suggest that the breakpoints for the Rb translocation occur very close to the minor satellite-major satellite border. Moreover, it is likely that the minor satellite is required for centromeric function, 50–67 kb being enough DNA to organise one centromere with a functionally active kinetochore.  相似文献

The hetero-bimetallic Ind complexes (Ind=indenyl anion) with the formula (CO)3Cr(μ-Ind)RhL2 (L=CO, ethylene; L2=COD, COT, NBD) have two possible conformers, one with the metals at antipodal sides of the condensed bicyclic polyene (antarafacial, anti) and the other with both metals on the same side (cofacial, syn). These systems can be considered to contain 34 valence electrons by assuming that Ind is capable of donating all of its ten π electrons to the metals. A qualitative MO analysis, based on EHMO calculations, is presented. The anti conformer is compared to the homometallic 34e species, namely [CpRu(μ-Ind)RuCp]+. Here, the pseudo-symmetrical relationship between the two identical metal fragments strongly suggests that one Ind σ-bonding MO donates part of its electron density to each of the two metals, which thus become formally saturated (36e). This argument is extended to the anti Cr---Rh derivative in which a critical role is played by an empty FMO of the (CO)2Rh(I) fragment with π symmetry (i.e. lying in the molecular mirror plane). The latter, in spit the large πCO* contributions, has good acceptor capabilities at the metal.The calculations suggest that the so-called indenyl effect, namely the increased rate of substitution of one CO ligand by another σ donor (e.g. a phosphine), although a structurally dynamic process, also depends on the electron density which accumulates on the aforementioned π FMO. In the series (η5-C5H5)Rh(CO)2, (η5-C7H9Rh(CO)2 and {η5-[(CO)3CrC7H9]}-Rh(CO)2 the progressively reduced donor capabilities of the cyclic polyene toward the (CO)2Rh(I) fragment induce a larger electrophilicity in rhodium, in good agreement with the experimental data on substitution reactivity. Finally, the electronic features of the cofacial conformer (CO)3Cr(μ-Ind)Rh(CO)2 are examined. In spite of the long Cr---Rh separation (> 3 Å) the graphically illustrated MO analysis indicates a direct, heterodox, intermetallic linkage, which helps the metals to achieve a formal electronic saturation. In this case, the limited propensity of the complex toward any CO substitution reactions is likely attributable to the hindered mobility of the (CO)2Rh(I) fragment.  相似文献

The x-ray diffraction analyses of three N- and C-terminally blocked L , D dipeptides, namely t-Boc-D -Leu-L -Leu-OMe ( 1 ), t-Boc-L -Ile-D -alle-OMe ( 2 ), and t-Boc-D -aIle-L -Ile-OMe (3) containing enantiomeric or diastereomeric amino acid residues have been carried out. The structures were determined by direct methods and refined anisotropically to final R factors of 0.077. 0.058. and 0.072 for ( 1 ) ( 2 ) and ( 3 ), respectively. Peptides 1–3 all assume a similar U-shaped structure with ? and ψ torsion angles cosrresponding to one of the possible calculated minimum energy regions (regions E and G for L residues, and F*. D* and H* for D residues). The peptide backbones of 1-3 are almost super-imposable [provided that the appropriate inversion of the chiral centers of ( 2 ) is made]. Side-chain conformations of Leu residues in peptide ( 1 ) are g? (tg?) for the L -Leu residue and the mirrored g+ (tg+) for the D -Leu residue; however, in peptides ( 2 ) and ( 3 ) the conformations of the isoconfiguralional side chains of the Ile or allo-Ile residues are (g?t) t and (tg+) tfor the L -Ile and the D -allo-Ile moieties, respectively. In all cases, these conformations correspond to the more populated conformers of β-branched residues statistically found in crystal structures of small peptides. The results seem to indicate that, at least in short peptides with enantiomeric or diastereoisomeric residues, the change in chirality in the main-chain atoms perturbs the backbone conformation to a lesser extent and the side chain conformation to a greater extent. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The solid state conformational analysis of [Tyr4] cyclolinopeptide A has been carried out by x-ray diffraction studies. The crystal structure of the monoclinic form, grown from a dioxane-water mixture [a = 9.849 (5) Å, b = 20.752 (4) Å, c = 16.728 (5) Å, β = 98.83 (3)°, space group P21, Z = 2], shows the presence of five intramolecular N-H? O?C hydrogen bonds, with formation of one C17 ring structure, one α-turn (C13), one inverse γ-turn (C7), and two β-turns (C10, one of type III and one of type 1). The Pro1-Pro2 peptide unit is cis (ω = 5°) all others are trans. The structure is almost superimposable with that of cyclolinopeptide A. The rms deviation for the atoms of the backbones is on the average 0.33 Å. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Molecular recognition processes between cell surface elements are discussed with special reference to cell surface pattern formation of membrane-bound integral proteins. The existence, as detected by flow cytometric resonance energy transfer (Appendix), and significance of cell surface patterns involving the interleukin-2 receptor, the T-cell receptor–CD3 system, the intercellular adhesion molecule ICAM-1, and the major histocompatilibilty complex class I and II molecules in the plasma membrane of lymphocytes are described. The modulation of antigen presentation by transmembrane potential changes is discussed, and a general role of transmembrane potential changes, and therefore of icon channel activities, adduced as one of the major regulatory mechanisms of cell–cell communications. A general role in the mediation and regulation of intercellular interactions is suggested for cell-surface macromolecular patterns. The dynamic pattern of protein and lipid molecules in the plasma membrane is generated by the genetic code, but has a remarkable flexibility and may be one of the major instruments of accomodation and recognition processes at the cellular level.  相似文献
