Understanding the significance of electrophoretic variation is of interest for both ecological and evolutionary genetics. Although there has been a very active neutralist–selectionist debate about the patterns of electrophoretic variation in natural populations, it is only recently that charged amino acids have been shown to be important in enzyme adaptation. In this study we carried out a broad electrophoretic survey of amylase variation in 150 species of Drosophilids. The distribution of amylase electromorphs was found to be correlated with the geographical origin of the flies. Generally the faster migrating variants are found in warmer temperatures. There is also a correlation with the feeding habits of the species, in particular, fungus feeders consistently showed a deviating pattern of electrophoretic mobility. These correlations between ecological diversity and electrophoretic patterns indicate that at least some of the changes in charged amino acids are adaptive, and result from selection to cope with specific environments.  相似文献

The class Prasinophyceae (Chlorophyta) contains several photosynthetic picoeukaryotic species described from cultured isolates. The ecology of these organisms and their contributions to the picoeukaryotic community in aquatic ecosystems have received little consideration. We have designed and tested eight new 18S ribosomal DNA oligonucleotide probes specific for different Prasinophyceae clades, genera, and species. Using fluorescent in situ hybridization associated with tyramide signal amplification, these probes, along with more general probes, have been applied to samples from a marine coastal site off Roscoff (France) collected every 2 weeks between July 2000 and September 2001. The abundance of eukaryotic picoplankton remained high (>10(3) cells ml(-1)) during the sampling period, with maxima in summer (up to 2 x 10(4) cells ml(-1)), and a single green algal species, Micromonas pusilla (Prasinophyceae), dominated the community all year round. Members of the order Prasinococcales and the species Bathycoccus prasinos (Mamiellales) displayed sporadic occurrences, while the abundances of all other Prasinophyceae groups targeted remained negligible.  相似文献

The initiation of Phaeocystis colonies   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This study was designed to elucidate the sequence of eventsthat leads to the formation of new colonies of Phaeocystis sp.(strain PCC 540) starting from single cells released from maturecolonies. Colonies were first isolated by filtration onto a10 µm mesh. Colonial cells were then liberated by shakingand inoculated into individual culture wells containing mediumwith a PO42– concentration of {small tilde}1 µM.Cell size and shape were determined daily by image analysis, while chlorophyll and DNA distributions were estimated by flowcytometry. Released cells were non-flagellated and mostly locatedin the G1 phase of the cell cycle. They developed flagella andup to 90% became motile within 24 h. Swarmers lost motilityrapidly, became elongated, began to cycle again, excreted amucilaginous compound and divided leading to new colonies withina few days. During this reproducible process, no change of ploidycould be observed. Colonies initially adhered to the bottomof culture wells. Frequent mixing drastically reduced the fractionof colonies produced and their volume. High initial PO42–concentrations (5 µM) delayed colony appearance, whereaslow concentrations (0.3 µM) prevented colony formation. The two main conclusions of this study are: (i) under favorableconditions ({small tilde}1 µM PO42– no mixing),a large percentage of released colonial cells give back coloniesafter going through a flagellated stage; (ii) sexuality doesnot appear to be involved in this process. 1Present address: CREMA BP 5, F-17137 L'Houmeau, France  相似文献

Asiatic Clams are common in brackish and fresh water in Asia, and they were introduced into North America in 1924 and have now spread throughout the continent. During the last two decades they have been reported in Europe, but the number of species here is uncertain. Populations of Corbicula from France and the Netherlands were analysed morphologically and genetically to quantify the degree of species and/or population differentiation. The morphological and genetic data, based on allozymes and mitochondrial sequences, were in full agreement. They indicate that there are two distinct species, identified as C. fluminalis and C. fluminea, in the two countries. Analyses of the mitochondrial COI gene revealed an unexpected divergent population of Corbicula in the Rhône. All these individuals were morphologically identified as C. fluminea, but had a COI sequence different from the two previous species. This population may, therefore, be a more ancient population, or a distinct species introduced via a different colonization route.  相似文献

Genetic variability studied among 13 Trypanosoma cruzi laboratory reference stocks confirms the existence of three principal isozymic categories. As the main part of enzymic variability is now recognized, it seems possible to attribute any stock to the taxon T. cruzi with safety. Genetic parameters allow to infer two main hypotheses relative to the evolutionary origin of these categories: ancient origin (either by mitotic evolution or by speciation), or recent origin (by clone sampling among a sexual ancestral population). The possibility of a heterogeneous origin of the strains is discussed.  相似文献

Background

No clinical trials have assessed the effects or cost-effectiveness of health check strategies to detect and manage vascular disease. We used a mathematical model to estimate the cost-effectiveness of several health check strategies in six European countries.

Methods

We used country-specific data from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom to generate simulated populations of individuals aged 40–75 eligible for health checks in those countries (e.g. individuals without a previous diagnosis of diabetes, myocardial infarction, stroke, or serious chronic kidney disease). For each country, we used the Archimedes model to compare seven health check strategies consisting of assessments for diabetes, hypertension, lipids, and smoking. For patients diagnosed with vascular disease, treatment was simulated in a standard manner. We calculated the effects of each strategy on the incidence of type 2 diabetes, major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), and microvascular complications in addition to quality of life, costs, and cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY).

Results

Compared with current care, health checks reduced the incidence of MACE (6–17 events prevented per 1000 people screened) and diabetes related microvasular complications (5–11 events prevented per 1000 people screened), and increased QALYs (31–59 discounted QALYs) over 30 years, in all countries. The cost per QALY of offering a health check to all individuals in the study cohort ranged from €14903 (France) to cost saving (Poland). Pre-screening the population and offering health checks only to higher risk individuals lowered the cost per QALY. Pre-screening on the basis of obesity had a cost per QALY of €10200 (France) or less, and pre-screening with a non-invasive risk score was similar.

Conclusions

A vascular disease health check would likely be cost effective at 30 years in Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom.  相似文献

The spread of maternally inherited microorganisms, such as Wolbachia bacteria, can induce indirect selective sweeps on host mitochondria, to which they are linked within the cytoplasm. The resulting reduction in effective population size might lead to smaller mitochondrial diversity and reduced efficiency of natural selection. While documented in several host species, it is currently unclear if such a scenario is common enough to globally impact the diversity and evolution of mitochondria in Wolbachia‐infected lineages. Here, we address this question using a mapping of Wolbachia acquisition/extinction events on a large mitochondrial DNA tree, including over 1000 species. Our analyses indicate that on a large phylogenetic scale, other sources of variation, such as mutation rates, tend to hide the effects of Wolbachia. However, paired comparisons between closely related infected and uninfected taxa reveal that Wolbachia is associated with a twofold reduction in silent mitochondrial polymorphism, and a 13% increase in nonsynonymous substitution rates. These findings validate the conjecture that the widespread distribution of Wolbachia infections throughout arthropods impacts the effective population size of mitochondria. These effects might in part explain the disconnection between genetic diversity and demographic population size in mitochondria, and also fuel red‐queen‐like cytonuclear co‐evolution through the fixation of deleterious mitochondrial alleles.  相似文献
