Abstract. 1. Foraging behaviour and movement within and among host patches of the specialist parasitoid wasp Cotesia melitaearum (Braconidae) attacking the larvae of Melitaea cinxia (Nymphalidae) were studied in the field and in the laboratory.
2. In the field, female wasps aggregated in large host groups in the autumn and caused positive spatial density-dependent parasitism in the field. Wasps stayed longer with groups of pre-diapause caterpillars than with post-diapause caterpillars, but attacked them less frequently.
3. In the laboratory, wasps attacked larger larvae more readily than smaller larvae. Also in the laboratory, wasps exposed to larvae outside their protective webs showed differences in the rates at which they attacked larvae fed different diets, implicating host plant-derived chemicals as proximate cues for foraging wasps.
4. Mark–recapture studies indicated that there was a low rate of successful movement of wasps among groups of young larvae within a habitat patch in the autumn and no successful movement of wasps across non-habitat. In contrast, wasps moved frequently among groups of late-instar caterpillars in the spring.
5. Host caterpillars of different ages responded very differently to wasp attacks. Pre-diapause larvae remained in groups and used collective head-jerking behaviour to defend themselves, whereas post-diapause larvae dispersed away from the group immediately after being attacked.
6. Population and metapopulation level dynamics of the host–parasitoid interaction are discussed in light of these observations of the behaviour of individual wasps.  相似文献

The phase-space relationship between simultaneously measured myoplasmic [Ca2+] and isovolumetric left ventricular pressure (LVP) in guinea pig intact hearts is altered by ischemic and inotropic interventions. Our objective was to mathematically model this phase-space relationship between [Ca2+] and LVP with a focus on the changes in cross-bridge kinetics and myofilament Ca2+ sensitivity responsible for alterations in Ca2+-contraction coupling due to inotropic drugs in the presence and absence of ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to exploit the molecular and morphological variability present in Malus domestica to clarify the confused characterization of apple plantations in the Azores. Most Azorean apples are grown in orchards. They are usually given a local name, and sometimes the same name is used for different cultivars and varieties which share morphology and should be known by different names. Two-hundred samples of apples cultivated in the Azores were analyzed by use of ten microsatellites. The total number of alleles per locus ranged from 10 to 24, with a mean of 15.2. Heterozygosity was high, reflecting the high variability of the samples. Expected heterozygosity varied within a narrow range, from 0.74 to 0.88, whereas observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.41 to 0.98. The high genetic variability contributed to the high discriminating power, which ranged between 0.84 and 0.93. These microsatellites were used to unambiguously discriminate most of the tested apple cultivars on the basis of their allelic profiles. The rooted UPGMA tree organized most of the samples into thirteen main clusters, often with high bootstrap values. We identified 60 synonyms and 32 homonyms among the samples. Moreover, it was possible to relate each individual to its originating population and detect likely parent–offspring groups.  相似文献

Several recent studies document that specialist insect phytophages may be less subject to predation than generalists and suggest that hostplant-derived chemical defences may be an important explanation for the predominance of specialized feeding among insect herbivores. The evolution of such chemical defences depends upon both their advantages versus natural enemies and their physiological costs, but data on these costs, particularly genetic data, are few. Here I report the results of an ecological genetic investigation of food use efficiency and allelochemical sequestration in Junonia coenia Hu¨bner (Nymphalidae). I used standard gravimetric techniques to estimate the efficiency of dry matter incorporation and iridoid glycoside sequestration in the larvae of 37 full-sib families fed artificial diets containing trace, low (2%) and high (10%) concentrations of iridoid glycosides. I found a significant reduction in the efficiency of dry matter incorporation on a high iridoid diet that is entirely attributable to reduced digestibility rather than post-digestive toxic effects. Larvae fed high-iridoid diets sequestered them less efficiently, but this difference was due largely to post-digestive effects. Analyses of genetic variation and architecture of dry matter and iridoid budgets reveal substantial genetic variation in both suites of traits, but only chemical defence showed a significant genotype×environment interaction which would be conducive to the evolution of specialization. Neither group of traits showed across-diet trade-offs in the form of negative correlations of family means among diets. Family means correlations of sequestration indices with dry matter indices within diets reveals that chemical defence comes at a cost to growth, but only in the high diet. I also found evidence of specialized physiological machinery for iridoid glycoside processing. These data indicate that even adapted specialists are negatively affected by plant toxins, but in this species, dietary specialization is more likely to result from selection from natural enemies than from hostplant toxins.  相似文献
