The lighting industry currently accounts for a significant proportion of all energy demand. Luminescent white lighting is often impure, inefficient, expensive, and detrimentally emits as a point source, meaning the light is emitted from a focused point. A luminescent light diffuser offers the potential to create a spatially broad lighting fixture. We developed a luminescent light diffuser consisting of three commercially available luminescent dye species (rhodamine 6G, fluorescein, 7-diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin) dispersed within a polymer matrix (polyvinyl alcohol), or commercial paint, and coated on a planar waveguide. A Light-emitting diode (LED) (385 nm) is directed into the waveguide which excites the luminescent species, coating the panel, creating a device that emits spatially broad pure white light. As the emission depends on escape cone emission from the waveguide, the device’s emission was found to depend highly on the coating film quality and components. We present two systems: a small 40 mm × 40 mm prototype, made using standard water-soluble polymer (polyvinyl alcohol), to study the underlying operational principles, and a 100 mm × 100 mm device with optimized efficiency fabricated with a clear commercial paint. By doping the polymer matrix with scattering silica microparticles we achieved a maximum photon outcoupling efficiency of 78%, whilst maintaining colour purity with an increased device size of more than 300 times (compared with the input LED). This work shows that it is possible to construct an inexpensive and spatially broad lighting source, whilst maintaining colour purity at a low cost.  相似文献

Aims The evolutionary history and functional traits of species can illuminate ecological processes supporting coexistence in diverse forest communities. However, little has been done in decoupling the relative importance of these mechanisms on the turnover of phylogenetic and functional characteristics across life stages and spatial scales. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the contribution of environment and dispersal on the turnover of phylogenetic and functional diversity across life stages and spatial scales, in order to build a coherent picture of the processes responsible for species coexistence.  相似文献

Adhesion of pathogenic strains of Serratia spp. to the foregut tissue of the New Zealand grass grub (Costelytra zealandica) was shown to be associated with the development of amber disease. Bacteria were always found adhering to the crop in the region of the cardiac valve in larvae showing disease symptoms after in vivo treatment with pathogenic bacteria while no significant colonization was observed in larvae treated with wild‐type, non‐pathogenic strains. The in vitro inoculation of excised crops with pathogenic and non‐pathogenic strains resulted in a similar pattern of adhesion. It is suggested that adhesion is an early step in pathogenesis and that farther bacterial mediated factors could be required for fall expression of amber disease.  相似文献

Aim Using data from field introduction experiments with Gammarus spp. conducted in the rivers of a small island, commencing in 1949, with resampling in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and finally in 2005, we aimed to examine the long‐term interaction of the native freshwater amphipod Gammarus duebeni celticus with the introduced G. pulex. Using physico‐chemical data from a 2005 island‐wide survey, we also aimed to find what environmental factors could influence the distribution of the two species. Location The Isle of Man, British Isles. Methods We used species distribution data from 10 river sites from a field introduction study in 1949–69, resampling of these sites in 1974/5, 1988, 1995 and 2005. We sampled a further 82 sites in 2005, where physico‐chemical characteristics of each site were obtained. ANOVA was used to ascertain significant differences in environmental variables between native and introduced amphipod assemblages. Multiple discriminant analysis was used to relate Gammarus distribution to environmental gradients in rivers. Results Field introductions of G. pulex into previously G. d. celticus dominated sites failed, despite the large propagule pressure in terms of numbers of individuals released and repeated introductions. The island‐wide survey revealed that G. d. celticus was found in areas of higher water quality than G. pulex. Sites where the two species co‐occurred also tended to be of lower water quality than native only sites. Continuing metal pollution from past mining activity may be a major factor excluding all amphipods from many rivers. The North American amphipod Crangonyx pseudogracilis, which was first discovered on the Isle of Man in one river site in 1995, was found in a further five sites. Main conclusions This ecological experiment, through long‐term monitoring, thus continues to elucidate factors influencing the distributions of introduced and native species. Under some physicochemical regimes, G. d. celticus is able to withstand its usual displacement by G. pulex, whereas increased river pollution could promote replacement of the native by the introduced species.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the association between sedentary behavior and obesity among 12‐year‐old children, while adjusting for moderate‐to‐vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and other potential confounding variables. Cross‐sectional analyses were carried out with data from 5,434 children who participated in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Fat mass was derived using dual‐energy X‐ray emission absorptiometry, and height and weight measurements were used to calculate BMI (kg/m2). The children wore an accelerometer for 7 days. The cut points for sedentary behavior and MVPA were ≤199 and ≥3,600 counts per minute (cpm), respectively. Logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate odds ratios (ORs), adjusting for potential confounders of physical activity that included gender, social factors, early life factors, and maturation. The minimally adjusted association between sedentary behavior and obesity was positive, OR = 1.18 (1.08, 1.28). After adjusting for the series of potential confounders of physical activity the positive association remained, OR = 1.32 (1.14, 1.53). The crude association between 15 min of MVPA per day and obesity was negative, OR = 0.54 (0.48, 0.62). When 15 min of MVPA per day was additionally controlled for in the models, the positive associations between sedentary behavior and obesity were negated. Sedentary behavior was positively associated with obesity in the 12‐year‐old children, but this association was not independent of MVPA; low levels of MVPA among the sedentary children increased the odds of obesity. These findings support the importance of specifically engaging in MVPA during childhood to reduce the prevalence of obesity.  相似文献

Background  

DNA microarrays are popular tools for measuring gene expression of biological samples. This ever increasing popularity is ensuring that a large number of microarray studies are conducted, many of which with data publicly available for mining by other investigators. Under most circumstances, validation of differential expression of genes is performed on a gene to gene basis.
