Experimental hut trials of permethrin-impregnated mosquito nets and eave curtains against malaria vectors in Tanzania 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Permethrin impregnated netting was tested against Tanzanian populations of Anopheles arabiensis Patton, An.gambiae Giles and An.funestus Giles in experimental huts fitted with traps to catch samples of the mosquitoes existing during the night. Treated bednets killed some mosquitoes and increased the tendency of survivors to exit during the night. Treated cotton did not perform so well as treated nylon bednets. An impregnated bednet in which holes had been cut, to simulate a torn net, reduced the number of mosquitoes which fed and survived approximately as well as an intact untreated net. Treated curtains around the eaves of experimental huts did not perform so well as bednets but caused considerable reductions in the number of mosquitoes which fed and survived. However, there was no such effect when treated netting was placed around the eaves of a dwelling house. When one child slept under a treated net and another slept outside the net in the same hut, the number of bites on the latter child was less than if neither child had been under a net. In shake-flask culture asymmetrin was produced by PenicIlliumthomiiaud Byssochlamys niveaduring autolysis. A bioassay wasdevised to estimate relative concentrations of this compound.Culture filtrates of P. thomiicontaining asymmetrin caused adecrease in wet weight, dry weight, and total nitrogen of Phaseolusvulgarisup to 18 days after treatment. At certain intervalsafter treatment with culture filtrate of B. nivea,respirationwas inhibited, and changes were observed in isotope ratio valuesof plants supplied with glucose-14 C. Plants treated previouslywith culture filtrates of B. nivearesponded but little to gibberelhcacid. High concentrations of mdoleacetic acid inhibited growthof control plants but stimulated growth of plants treated withculture filtrate of B. nivea.

Methionine sulphoximine, an inhibitor of glutamine synthetase,caused ammonia accumulation in detached wheat leaves. The ratewas increased by increased oxygen in the atmosphere and by simultaneouslysupplying glycine or giving extra nitrate; it was decreasedby isonicotinyl hydrazide. Ammonia production was light-dependentand continued at a constant rate in air for at least 2 h. Photosynthesiswas progressively inhibited after the first hour; this inhibitionwas not because of increased stomatal resistance. Leaves suppliedwith 30 mol m3 ammonium chloride, without methioninesulphoximine, accumulated more ammonia than leaves treated withthe inhibitor but showed less inhibition of photosynthesis.The inhibitor decreased synthesis of [14C] amino acids from14CO2 in the light but increased the synthesis of [14C] malateand, relatively, the incorporation of 14C into sugar phosphates.In the absence of inhibitor, nitrate increased and ammoniumion decreased synthesis of malate. Methionine sulphoximine,by causing a shortage of amino acids, probably inhibited photosynthesisin part by decreasing the recycling of carbon from the photorespiratorycycle back to the Calvin cycle. Changes in nitrogen content and in respiration rate have beeninvestigated in cell suspension cultures of Acer pseudoplatanus.Nitrogen content and rate of oxygen uptake rise sharply earlyin the period of culture, during which there is no significantincrease in dry weight and only a small increase in cell number.During the subsequent period of rapid cell division there isa decline in both respiration rate and nitrogen content permg dry weight or per cell. Pronounced rises in respiration rateand cell nitrogen therefore occur prior to the period of rapidcell division. The strong correlation between nitrogen contentand oxygen consumption suggests that the respiration rate ismuch more closely related to changes in protein content thanto changes in cell number, dry weight, or packed-cell volume. 相似文献

An embryonic ammonoid assemblage was discovered in a carbonate concretion recovered from a dysoxic, relatively offshore marine shale of Virgilian (Upper Pennsylvanian) age in Kansas, USA. The assemblage consists primarily of two species of the Goniatitina, Aristocerassp. and Vidrioceras sp., whose initial chambers (protoconchs) differ in size and shape. Microscopic observations of serial thin sections of specimens at different growth stages reveal the sequence of embryonic shell development starting with the formation of the initial chamber and ending with the synchronous secretion of a prismatic proseptum and nacreous swelliig (primary varix) at the aperture. The mode of occurrence of the embryonic shells of the two species in the concretion suggests that these ammonoids produced numerous small offspring, a reproductive strategy similar to that in many extant coleoids. □ Ammonoids, embryonic shells, development, Carboniferous, Kansas. 相似文献

Malformin induces curvatures, stimulates root hair and lateralroot formation, promotes radial expansion, inhibits elongation,wet and dry weight, cell division and cell wall synthesis inroots of Zea mays, but has no effect on protein synthesis. Thegrowth curves (elongation, wet and dry weight) of Z. mays rootstreated with malformin are cubic. Processes which are involvedin inhibition of elongation are considered the primary causeof root curvatures by malformin.
