The etiologic agent of the renal adenocarcinoma of leopard frogs, Rana pipiens , is the Lucké tumor herpesvirus (LTHV). The virus is easily detected with thin section electron microscopy in primary tumors of frogs which have been exposed to a cold environment. Several spontaneous metastatic nodules and a large primary tumor were detected at autopsy of a frog which had been maintained at 4°C for 73 days. LTHV was found not only in the primary tumor, as previously reported, but also was present in metastatic tumor cells in the liver, fat body, and bladder. The presence of LTHV in metastatic cells demonstrates that the differentiated state of primary Lucké tumor cells is retained in its metastatic colonies even at the fine structure level revealed by electron microscopy. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The Trivers-Willard (1973) model suggests maternal control of offspring sex, in utero or by the end of parental investment, may be an adaptive advantage in some species. We tested for differential sex allocation using 11,408 known-sex fetal elk (Cervus elaphus) from biological collections and hunter harvest returns from 2 southwestern Montana, USA, elk populations (1961–2007). We included maternal and environmental condition covariates measured pre- and postconception and throughout pregnancy. Results suggested that adult female elk in southwest Montana did not differentially invest in male offspring when conditions were beneficial. We found evidence that, when the Northern Yellowstone elk herd was at low density, beneficial spring (May-Jun) growing conditions, as indexed by a local precipitation measure and a regional drought indicator, correlated with production of more female fetuses (1 SD increase in precipitation and 1 SD decrease in drought resulted in 6% and 5% more F fetuses, respectively). In the same herd, we found evidence that improved maternal condition, as indexed by kidney fat mass and heart fat mass, also correlated with production of more female fetuses (1 SD increase in kidney fat mass and heart fat mass resulted in 8% more F fetuses). When the same elk herd reached higher densities under different ecological conditions, no covariate was associated with a deviation in the 50:50 female-to-male sex ratio. Similarly, there was no association between covariates and fetal sex ratios in a nearby elk herd at high population density. In modeling, wildlife managers should consider factors that could alter sex ratios at birth, and also how biased sex ratios postpartum could affect population models. 相似文献

Selective predation of Esox lucius on Gasterosteus aculeatus in a natural assemblage of fish of a stream in Central Poland is described and analysed. The number of lateral plates, the standard length and four size-dependent traits were significantly smaller for sticklebacks from stomach samples than for those from population samples. Thc remaining three metric traits were not significantly different among the samples. The regressions of five metric features (out of seven) on the standard length were significantly different between the sample of caten sticklebacks and that from the free-living population. This supports the supposition that the selectivity of pikc predation with respect to metric traits is not attributable to selection on body size of the prey. Thus, it is reasonable to claim that the sample of caten sticklebacks is selectively taken from the natural population. SYNOPSIS. Infective particles (IPs) of Theileria parva , the causative organism of East Coast Fever of cattle, were harvested from the tick vector, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus , using an in vitro feeding technic. In a ranging experiment, pairs of cattle were inoculated with aliquots of suspensions of IPs irradiated at doses of 4–137.6 krad. Doses of irradiation in excess of 8 krad appeared to destroy the parasite. In the 2nd and 3rd experiments, groups of 5 cattle were inoculated with aliquots of suspensions containing low and high concentrations of IPs respectively, irradiated at doses of 4–32 krad. In the 2nd experiment, doses of irradiation in excess of 10 krad appeared to destroy the parasite. In the 3rd experiment, at least 1 animal became infected when inoculated with an aliquot of a suspension irradiated at 16 krad. In all experiments, it appeared that increasing doses of irradiation destroyed increasing numbers of IPs. There was no conclusive evidence that IPs which survived irradiation were attenuated, and it appears that vaccination of cattle against ECF is unlikely to be achieved by inoculation of irradiated IPs using the methods described. 相似文献
