In two pot experiments, removal of the top halves of ears (halving)of three winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties at varioustimes after anthesis increased the nitrogen content in the grainsof the lower half of the ear. The increase was greater withearly (anthesis and 5 d later) than late (15 and 25 d post-anthesis)removal in the Splendeur and Hobbit varieties, but there wereno significant differences among halving times in Maris Huntsman.Halving also increased nitrogen as a percentage of dry weightof grain. The percentage of nitrogen in the grain decreasedas the time of halving was delayed in Splendeur (expt. 1) andHobbit, but was unaffected by the time of halving in Splendeur(expt. 2) and Maris Huntsman. Nitrogen uptake of shoots afteranthesis decreased with halving. Early halving decreased nitrogenuptake to a lesser extent than did late halving in Splendeurin expt. 1 and in Hobbit, while it decreased nitrogen uptakemore than late halving in Splendeur in expt. 2 and in Mans Huntsman. Alternanthera (Amaranthaceae) is a diverse genus (80–200 species) largely restricted to the American Tropics. With Pedersenia and Tidestromia, it makes up the ‘Alternantheroid clade’ in Gomphrenoideae. Parsimony and Bayesian analyses of nucleotide sequences of nuclear (ITS) and plastid (rpl16, trnL‐F) and morphological characters identify that the capitate stigma of Alternanthera is a synapomorpy within the Alternantheroids. Within Alternanthera, two major clades were resolved, both of which were marked by otherwise homoplasious characters of the gynoecium: Clade A [99% jackknife (JK); 1.0 posterior probability (PP)] with nine species and Clade B (60% JK; 0.98 PP) with 22 species. Four subclades (B1–B4), strongly supported statistically, were identified in Clade B. Previous subgeneric classifications of Alternanthera appear artificial in light of our new molecular phylogenetic analyses. Most major lineages are congruently resolved by nuclear and plastid data but some incongruence between the nrITS and plastid phylogenetic trees suggests hybridization may have played a role in the rampant speciation in Alternanthera. Whereas C4 photosynthesis appears to have evolved in a single clade, the position of A. littoralis var. maritima (C3) in this clade may be explained by hybrid speciation rather than a reversal from C4 to C3. All C3–C4 intermediates belong to a different clade that also contains C3 species, but species limits, including the widely studied A. tenella, are unclear. The clade including A. tenella and A. halimifolia contains most of the species endemic to the Galápagos whereas A. nesiotes, also endemic to the islands, is nested among widespread American taxa. This suggests that the Galápagos radiation of Alternanthera may have arisen from at least two independent colonization events followed by a subsequent radiation in the former lineage. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 169 , 493–517.  相似文献

The distribution of cacti species that inhabit the Sierra Madre Oriental (SMO) was analysed. Grid-cells were analysed using parsimony analysis of endemicity (PAE) and endemism indices. Areas characterized by their diagnostic species were determined, aiming to propose areas for the conservation of threatened cacti. Distributional data were obtained from 1936 herbarium specimens, electronic information, and from field collections. Eight areas of endemism and three main clades were obtained from the grid-cell analysis. Areas obtained from the endemism indices are very similar to those obtained with the PAE, but differ in the association of grid-cells. PAE showed endemism patterns indicating that southern and central sections of the SMO province are the areas richest in geographically-restricted species. The results obtained with different endemism indices detected more or less the same areas, although the importance level is different. The corrected weighted endemism index can be considered as a reliable measure of endemism because it is unrelated to species richness. A regionalization of the SMO in three subprovinces is suggested, supported by characteristic cacti taxa and the existence of natural barriers.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 373–389.  相似文献

Martínez, S., del Río, C.J. & Pérez, D.E. 2010: A brittle star bed from the Miocene of Patagonia, Argentina. Lethaia , Vol. 43, pp. 1–9.
As a consequence of the extremely poor fossil record of brittle stars, every new discovery is important. The Miocene example studied herein involves the recently described species Ophiocrossota kollenbergorum Caviglia, Martínez & del Río recovered from the Chenque Formation of southeastern Argentina. The information used here is derived from unpublished data and a new record from two discrete, thin, monospecific patches. The main taphonomic features of the patches, namely the presence of specimens concordant with bedding planes, (with either aboral or oral side upwards), and the good preservation of the delicate discs (ca. 6 mm wide on average), and the preservation of un-oriented arms complete with fragile tips (not wider than 0.2 mm), point to a suddenly buried census assemblage. Although broken or isolated arms were found, this is attributed to the erosive environmental conditions of the abrasion platform where the studied exposure is located today. Size frequency distributions suggest that both patches were buried at different seasons. Observed densities are 77 and 143 individuals/m2, and distances between individuals are random. The arm length/disc diameter ratio indicates that Ophiocrossota kollenbergorum may have been an epifaunal surface dweller. No signs of predation (such as regenerated arms), were identified.  相似文献

In the mating system of simultaneously hermaphroditic animals, sexual allocation is predicted to vary as a function of the number of potential mates. According to the Hermaphrodite's Dilemma, sexual conflict over the preferred sexual role in hermaphroditic animals is resolved by reciprocity (i.e. by alternating sexual roles), accompanied by the animals' occasional cheating in the preferred role at a relatively low frequency. In a 350‐generation‐old laboratory strain of the pair‐mating outcrossing hermaphroditic polychaete worm Ophryotrocha diadema, we show that 9% of the individuals mated only in the male role over long periods, indicating a male‐role preference (temporary functional males). Furthermore, 2% of the individuals mated for their whole lifetime exclusively as males (permanent functional males). These findings indicate that the sex allocation of some individuals may vary from the predicted optimal sex allocation for the population. Morphologically, functional males exhibited a hermaphroditic phenotype (i.e. they matured a single batch of oocytes that they never laid and acted as functional males). We show that temporary functional males appeared in hermaphroditic populations under promiscuous mating regimes significantly more often than under monogamous ones. Indeed, under promiscuity, there are many mating opportunities and O. diadema hermaphrodites compete for mates, whereas, under monogamy, the two partners regularly take turns in laying cocoons and fertilizing their partner's cocoon. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 451–456.  相似文献

Occupational health remains neglected in developing countries because of competing social, economic and political challenges. Ethical issues in the workplace related to the hazards and risks of becoming infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana , through the bite of naturally infected sand flies, is another area of concern that has been neglected as well. We report here the results of reviewing two entomological field studies carried out in our research center from 2003 to 2006. Eight students from our School of Biology were invited to catch sand flies. A total of six of the eight (75%) developed a typical clinical picture of Localized Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (LCL) caused by L. (L.) mexicana . In this article we identify the ethical issues related to these kinds of studies and propose some guidelines for conducting them.  相似文献

Knowledge of the evolutionary processes that shaped a biota is important for both academic and conservation purposes. The objective of the present study is to analyse the mitochondrial genetic variation of Xiphorhynchus fuscus (Aves: Dendrocolaptidae) from the southern Atlantic forest in Brazil and Argentina, and to discuss whether the results support different hypotheses regarding the local intraspecific diversification of this species . We sequenced 575 bp of the control region of 114 specimens collected in the Brazilian states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina, and in the province of Misiones in Argentina. We studied the population genetic structure with analysis of molecular variance and the demographic history with multiple regression analysis, coalescence simulations, and demographic tests. Xiphorhynchus fuscus presented a significant population genetic structure (Φst = 0.57). Three mitochondrial lineages were described, one associated with Xiphorhynchus fuscus tenuirostris and the others with Xiphorhynchus fuscus fuscus. The data did not support the primary influence of geographical barriers or rivers in the intraspecific diversification of X. fuscus in the southern Atlantic forest. Instead, the data supported the influence of isolation by geographical distance, recent vicariance events, and demographic expansions apparently related to Pleistocene and Holocene forest dynamics.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 73–84.  相似文献
