ABSTRACT We used nucleotide sequence data from a mitochondrial DNA fragment to characterize variation within the endangered Lower Keys marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris hefneri). We observed 5 unique mitochondrial haplotypes across different sampling sites in the Lower Florida Keys, USA. Based on the frequency of these haplotypes at different geographic locations and relationships among haplotypes, we observed 2 distinct clades or groups of sampling sites (western and eastern clades). These 2 groups showed low levels of gene flow. Regardless of their origin, marsh rabbits from the Lower Florida Keys can be separated into 2 genetically distinct management units, which should be considered prior to implementation of translocations as a means of offsetting recent population declines.  相似文献

The incidence and severity of forest fires are linked to the interaction between climate, fuel and topography. Increased warming and drying in the future is expected to have a significant impact on the risk of forest fire occurrence. An increase in fire risk is linked to the synchronous relationship between climate and fuel moisture conditions. A warmer, drier climate will lead to drier forest fuels that will in turn increase the chance of successful fire ignition and propagation. This interaction will increase the severity of fire weather, which, in turn, will increase the risk of extreme fire behaviour. A warmer climate will also extend fire season length, which will increase the likelihood of fires occurring over a greater proportion of the year. In this study of the North Okanagan area of British Columbia, Canada, the impacts of climate change of fire potential were evaluated using the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System and multiple climate scenario analysis. Utilizing this approach, a 30% increase in fire season length was modelled to occur by 2070. In addition, statistically significant increases in fire severity and fire behaviour were also modelled. Fire weather severity was predicted to increase by 95% during the summer months by 2070 while fire behaviour was predicted to shift from surface fire‐intermittent crown fire regimes to a predominantly intermittent‐full crown fire regime by 2070 onwards. An increase in fire season length, fire weather severity and fire behaviour will increase the costs of fire suppression and the risk of property and resource loss while limiting human‐use within vulnerable forest landscapes. An increase in fire weather severity and fire behaviour over a greater proportion of the season will increase the risks faced by ecosystems and biodiversity to climatic change and increase the costs and difficulty of achieving sustainable forest management.  相似文献

The structure of polar lobes in eggs of the freshwater prosobranchgastropod Amnicola limosa has been studied by light microscopyand by transmission electron microscopy. A cytoplasmic localization,discovered within the lobes, is described. In controlled temperature glasshouses plant morphology, gramdevelopment and yield of pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum)were markedly affected by temperature during three stages ofplant growth: vegetative, stem elongation, and grain development.High temperature (to 33/28 °C day/night) during all threegrowth stages lowered grain yields by reducing basal tillering,numbers of grains per inflorescence, and single grain weight.Low temperature (21/16 °C) during the vegetative stage increasedbasal tillering and, as a result, total grain yield per plant.However, low temperature during the stem elongation stage reducedspikelet fertility and influorescence length, and thereby reducedthe potential main shoot grain yield. Low temperature duringgrain development increased the grain filling period and grainyield. The rate of grain filling did not vary over the rangeof 21/16 to 33/28 °C. Although plant morphology and grainyield were markedly affected by pre-anthesis thermal environment,grain development was not. 1. Female Utetheisa ornatrix mate multiply and may receive up to thirteen spermatophores. Spermatophores provide the female not only with sperm but also with a nuptial gift of pyrrolizidine alkaloid that she transmits to the eggs, protecting them against predation. Thus, through multiple mating the female accrues nuptial gifts that add to the defence of her offspring.
2. Multiple mating in female U. ornatrix brings about increases in fecundity, but not in longevity or egg mass. These increases occur through the third mating; the fourth and fifth matings, however, have no additional effect on fecundity.
3. These results, taken with the fact that spermatophores are sizeable and are digested within the female, suggest that they bear nutritive gifts that the female uses in egg construction. Multiple mating thus allows females to accrue the resources to build additional eggs.
4. These results are discussed in relation to the potential benefits accruing to donating such gifts and to male and female mating strategies.  相似文献

A phylogeny of mainland eastern Australian scrubwrens ( Sericornis citreogularis, S. frontalis, S. keri, S. tnagnirostris and S. beccarii ) was constructed using presence or absence of phylogenetically informative restriction sites in 15 mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes. MtDNA sequence divergences between species were generally large (mostly between 10 and 18%) emphasizing the antiquity of this radiation. Phylogenetic analysis of the mtDNA resulted in a strongly supported phylogeny concordant with relationships suggested by a previous study of allozyme variation, but conflicting with concepts based on morphological similarity. The mtDNAs grouped the species into two lineages, one containing beccarii and tnagnirostris and the other comprising citreogularis, frontalis and keri. The mtDNAs of beccarii and tnagnirostris were paraphyletic with a northern variant of tnagnirostris being more similar to beccarii than other magnirostris. The mtDNA from keri was most closely related to that of frontalis and then citreogularis. The strongly corroborated molecular phylogeny confirms and extends the previous (Christidis et al. 1988; Auk 105 > 616) reinterpretation of morphological and ecological shifts in the group. This suggests considerable plasticity and parallelism in the plumage characters previously used to associate species. The low divergence and close relationship between the montane rain-forest specialist keri and the widely distributed generalist frontalis demonstrate the capacity for evolutionarily rapid and dramatic shifts in habitat use. This contrasts with the assumption of fixed habitat preference that underlies refuge-based models of diversification of rain-forest fauna.  相似文献
