The basipterygoid articulation, an articular connection between the base of the braincase and the palatoquadrate, is widespread among gnathostome vertebrates. However, among living teleosts it is present only in the osteoglossomorphs Arapaima , Heterotis , Scleropages , Osteoglossum and Pantodon . Study of the development of the hyopalatine arch and the basipterygoid articulation in Pantodon buchholzi based on an ontogenetic series of cleared and double stained specimens yielded the following results: the symplectic process of the hyosymplectic cartilage never develops and the symplectic is absent; the pars hyomandibularis fuses with the palatoquadrate; the dermopalatine and ectopterygoid originate as separate bones, but fuse subsequently; the basal process is first visible on the pars metapterygoidea of the palatoquadrate at 7.0 mm standard length (SL); at 11.5 mm SL the basipterygoid process appears on the parasphenoid and contacts the basal process, establishing the basipterygoid articulation; the endopterygoid is initially not involved in the articulation, but during subsequent development enlarges and eventually forms an articular groove for the reception of the basipterygoid process of the parasphenoid; the distal tip of the basal process of the metapterygoid, however, still forms the caudolateral part of the articular groove in the adult. We discuss previous hypotheses about the homology of the basipterygoid articulation of osteoglossoids in light of these findings. Based on the numerous shared similarities and its occurrence in all major actinopterygian lineages, we argue that the basipterygoid articulation in osteoglossoids is homologous to that in non teleostean actinopterygians and represents a plesiomorphic character state at the level of Osteoglossomorpha.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 144 , 1−13.  相似文献

The Evolution of Male and Female Parental Care in Fishes   总被引:11,自引:1,他引:10  
In this paper we propose an explanation for (a) the predominanceof male care in fishes, and (b) the phylogenies and transitionsthat occur among care states. We also provide a general evolutionarymodel for studying the conditions under which parental careevolves. Our conclusions are as follows: (i) Parental care hasonly one benefit, the increased survivorship of young. It may,however, have three costs: a "mating cost," an "adult survivorshipcost," and a "future fertility cost." (ii) On average, malesand females will derive the same benefit from care. They probablyalso pay the same adult survivorship cost. However, their matingcost and future fertility costs may differ, (iii) A mating costusually applies only to males. However, this cost may be reducedby male territoriality and, in some situations, be entirelyremoved. Under this condition, natural selection on presentreproductive success is equivalent for males and females, (iv)When fecundity accelerates with body size in females, whilemale mating success follows a linear relationship with bodysize, future fertility costs of parental care are greater forfemales than males. Although further tests are needed, a preliminaryanalysis suggests this often may be the case in fishes. Thus,the predominance of male parental care in fishes is not explainedby males deriving greater benefits from care, but by males payingsmaller future costs. Males thus accrue a greater net fitnessadvantage from parental care (see expressions [6] and [12]).(v) The evolution of biparental care from uniparental male caremay occur because male care selects for larger egg sizes andincreased embryo investment by females. This increases the benefitto the female of parental care, (vi) By contrast, uniparentalfemale care may originate from biparental care when males areselected to desert. This occurs when female care creates a matingcost to males. In some cases male desertion may "lock" femalesinto uniparental care. However, in many other cases femalesmay be selected to desert, giving rise to "no care." (vii) Theorigin of uniparental female care from no care is rare in externallyfertilizing fishes. This is because the benefits of care rarelyoutweigh a female's future fertility costs (expression [9]).For internally fertilizing species, however, the benefit ofcare is high whereas the cost is probably low. Most of thesespecies have evolved embryo retention, (viii) When parentalcare begins with male care and moves to biparental care, ouranalysis suggests that care evolution will include cyclicaldynamics. Parental care in some fishes may thus be seen as transitionaland changing through evolutionary time rather than as an evolutionarilystable state. Coaldrake, P. D., Pearson, C. J. and Saffigna, P. G. 1987. Grainyield of Pennisetum americanum adjusts to nitrogen supply bychanging rates of grain filling and root uptake of nitrogen.–J.exp. Bot 38: 558–566. Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum(L.)Leeke) was grown in containers at three constant rates of nitrogensupply or with the nitrogen supply increased from the lowestto the highest rate during panicle differentiation or at anthesis.We measured the rate and duration of nitrogen and dry weightgain by individual grains and nitrogen (15N) uptake by rootsand its distribution during grain filling. The total amountsof nitrogen and dry weight in all grain per plant at the lowestnitrogen supply were 8% and 14% respectively of plants growncontinuously at the highest rate of nitrogen. This was becauselow rates of nitrogen supply reduced grain number, mean grainweight and the nitrogen content of each individual grain. Theamino acid composition of the grain protein was affected onlyslightly by nitrogen treatments. Rates of grain growth were sensitive to nitrogen supply whereasthe duration of nitrogen movement to the grain was not. Nitrogenuptake by roots continued throughout grain filling; rates ofuptake per g root in plants given least nitrogen were one-halfthose of plants given the highest amount of nitrogen. A changefrom lowest to highest nitrogen supply at panicle differentiationincreased the uptake of nitrogen by roots and the rates of growthof individual grains, to the rates observed in plants whichhad been supplied continuously with the highest nitrogen. Whenthe change in supply was made at anthesis there was rapid movementof nitrogen into the plant but this was not translated intomore rapid grain growth. The growth and development of the main stem and the two uppermostaxillary apices of maize were studied during the period fromemergence until flowering. Plants were grown in the field undervarying levels of applied nitrogen fertilizer at two times ofsowing. The effects of daylength were isolated from those oftemperature by making comparisons of growth and developmenton a thermal time basis. The growth and development of the terminal (male) apex and thetwo uppermost axillary (female) apices followed the same patterns,with apex volumes increasing curvilinearly with increase innumber of leaf or husk primordia. The RGR(relative growth rateof volume) of the terminal apex was, however, only approximatelyone-tenth of the axillary apices. There was no difference ingrowth and development between the first and second axillaryapices before flowering: other factors, such as accumulationof dry weight, rather than primordia production, must be responsiblefor an axillary apex's potential to bear grain. Applied N, andto a lesser extent short days, increased the rates of growthand development of all the apices. For example, applied N increasedthe RGR (volume) of the apical domes, and the rate of productionof spikelet primordia, by about 25%. All axillary apices and treatments showed a single relationshipbetween number of spikelets and surface area of the ear: a favourableenvironment (e.g. high N) simply accelerated the progressionof spikelet production and area expansion along this singlepath. We conclude that this path is probably determined geneticallyand that N and time of sowing influence potential yield of maizethrough effects on the surface area of the ear but not on thedensity of spikelets formed. Mitochondrial DNA variation was used to examine population structure in a widespread, marine-dispersed species, Birgus latro . Crabs were collected from eight locations throughout the species' Indo-Pacific distribution. Purified mtDNA from 160 individuals was cut with five restriction enzymes, revealing high haplotype diversity (0.96) and moderate nucleotide diversity (0.75%). Island populations from the Indian Ocean (Christmas I.) and Pacific Ocean were significantly different ( G ST= 0.37) and had distinct mtDNA lineages with a net sequence divergence of 1.4%. Pacific island populations had diverged in a manner consistent with isolation by distance, with only the most peripheral populations being significantly different. The results for mtDNA are largely concordant with those from allozymes, although estimates of gene flow between the Indian and Pacific Oceans were much lower when based on mtDNA. The mtDNA phylogeny also permitted a deeper examination of the evolutionary and demographic history of Birgus latro . Long-term separation of populations is evident in the complete phylogenetic subdivision of mtDNA lineages between the Indian and Pacific Ocean populations sampled. The starlike phylogeny of alleles from the Pacific suggests a rapid population expansion in the Pacific during the Pleistocene. Including information about allele phylogeny, as well as distribution and frequency, obscured contemporary population structure, but provided unique insights into the evolutionary history of the species.  相似文献

The electrical potential difference across the tonoplast ofpalisade mesophyll cells of leaves of Pisum sativum was 6.6± 0.8 mv (positive in the vacuole). The potential acrossthe plasmalemma depended on the particular anion accompanyingpotassium in the external solution. Assuming that the plasmalemmapotentials were diffusion potentials that could be analyzedusing the Goldman equation, the permeabilities of pyruvate,formate, .butyrate, acetate and bicarbonate into the cells werecalculated to be large compared with that of potassium, whilethe chloride permeability was relatively low. The upper limitsfor concentrations in the cytoplasm of palisade mesophyll cellsin pea leaves were as follows: potassium, 98 mM total monovalentorganic acids, 0.4 mM and bicarbonate, 0.2 mM. The morphology of root nodules formed on Lotus pedunculatusby two fast-growing strains of Rhizobium, NZP2037 which formseffective (nitrogen-fixing) nodules and NZP2213 which formsineffective (non-nitrogen-fixing) nodules, has been studied.The nodules formed by NZP2037 contained a central zone of bacteroid-filledplant cells surrounded by a cortex. In contrast the nodulesformed by NZP2213 contained no Rhizoblum-infected plant cells,but rhizobia were found in localized areas on the nodule surfaceand between the outer two or three cell layers of the nodule.Electron-dense osmiophilic deposits identified as flavolans(condensed tannins) were present in the vacuoles of many uninfectedplant cells in the nodules formed by both Rhizobium strains.This is the first time that flavolans have been positively identifiedin legume root nodules. In the NZP2037 nodule flavolans werepresent in the outer cortical and epidermal cells. In the ineffecitveNZP2213 nodule fiavolans were present in many of the centralnodule cells. The concentration of flavolan in the NZP2213 nodulewas 12 times higher than in the NZP2037 nodule.  相似文献

Cut, fruiting shoots of Lupinus albus L. supplied with 14C-and 15N-labelled L-asparagine, L-glutamine, L-aspartic acid,or L-glutamic acid through the transpiration stream readilytransferred the labelled carbon and nitrogen of each compoundto pods and seeds of fruits. A time course of labelling of phloemsap collected from petioles and fruit tips following feedingof labelled asparagine indicated that xylem to phloem exchangein leaflets was an immediate and effective route of transferof the amide to fruits and that this and the loading onto phloemof additional asparagine from unlabelled pools of the amidein stems furnished a major source of the nitrogen for fruitfilling. Xylem to phloem exchange of nitrogen was accomplishedin different ways for each amino acid. The amide nitrogen ofasparagine was transferred mainly in the unmetabolized compound,the nitrogen of aspartate and glutamate largely in a wide rangeof amino acids synthesized in the leaf, and the amide nitrogenof glutamine was transferred in a manner intermediate betweenthese extremes. Glutamine and asparagine were the principalphloem solutes labelled with nitrogen from any of the suppliedcompounds, but the photosynthetically produced amino acids,glutamate, aspartate, serine, alanine, and valine also became15N-labelled in phloem. The main pathway for glutamine synthesisin vegetative parts of the shoot appeared to be by amidationof glutamate, but asparagine was not considered to be derivedsimilarly from aspartate. Leaflets metabolized glutamine morereadily than asparagine, but in each case the amide nitrogenwas used for synthesis of a variety of amino acids and the carbonwas recovered largely in non-amino compounds.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from endosymbiote-free stocks of Paramecium tetraurelia was isolated by 2 procedures. the buoyant density of the mtDNA in neutral CsCI was 1.702 gm/cm3. a value consistent with the melting temperature of the mtDNA. Only linear molecules were observed by electron microscopy. These molecules were homogeneous in size with a monomer molecular weight of 25.6 × 106 daltons. the size of the mtDNA determined after digestion with the restriction endonucleases EcoRI or Hind III agreed with the value obtained by electron microscopy. These studies also revealed that the digestion pattern of mtDNA from stock 172 differed from that of the other 3 stocks (51, 127. 203) examined. Some mtDNA molecules exhibited snapback reassociation following denaturation.  相似文献
