Diagnostic Value of Thyrotropin-Releasing-Hormone Stimulation in Patients With Pituitary Tumor

Plasma prolactin response to thyrotropin-releasing-hormone (TRH) stimulation was diminished in 30 patients with prolactinomas and 9 patients with acromegaly who had normal serum prolactin levels. There was no overlap of prolactin responses when compared with 32 control patients. Responses of ten patients with adrenocorticotropin (ACTH)-secreting pituitary tumors were similar to those of controls. Plasma growth hormone concentrations after TRH stimulation changed significantly in 28% of normal control and 20%, 25% and 50% of patients with prolactin-, growth hormone- and ACTH-secreting pituitary tumors, respectively. Our data suggest that the blunted TRH-induced rise in plasma prolactin levels in patients with prolactinomas and those with acromegaly may be related to humoral factor(s) affecting TRH receptor or postreceptor function. Growth hormone responses to TRH are nonspecific and should not be considered a marker for active acromegaly.     

Effect of membrane potential and internal pH on active sodium-potassium transport and on ATP content in high-potassium sheep erythrocytes.

Ouabain-sensitive Na+ and K+ fluxes and ATP content were determined in high potassium sheep erythrocytes at different values of membrane potential and internal pH. Membrane potential was adjusted by suspending erythrocytes in media containing different concentrations of MgCl2 and sucrose. Concomitantly either the external pH was changed sufficiently to maintain a constant internal pH or the external pH was kept constant with a resultant change of internal pH. The erythrocytes were preincubated before the flux experiment started in a medium which produced increased ATP content in order to avoid substrate limitation of the pump. It was found that an increased cellular pH reduced the rates of active transport of Na+ and K+ without significantly altering the ratio of pumped Na+/K+. This reduction was not due to limitation in the supply of ATP although ATP content decreased when internal pH increased. Changes of membrane potential in the range between -10 and +60 mV at constant internal pH did not affect the rates of active transport of Na+ or K+.     

Nature and Inheritance of Nematode Resistance in Cereals

Resistance to a number of nematodes is present in varieties of temperate and tropical cereals. The occurrence, nature, and inheritance of varietal resistance in cereals is reviewed. Evaluation of the practical significance of nematode resistance in a particular host-nematode combination is discussed in relation to host efficiency, host sensitivity, genetic control of resistance, and presence of virulence in the nematode population.     

Use of plastics for suspension culture vessels

Summary Plastic containers were found to facilitate the adaptation of a number of mammalian cell lines derived from normal tissues to growth in continuous suspension culture. Several different types of plastic materials were studied and a variety of culture vessels were designed.
