The principal characteristics of stomatogenesis during division in Climacostomum virens are: (A) Kinetosomal proliferation on the left side of a variable number of kineties in the ventral somatic cortex forms an oral primordium consisting of several kinetosomal fields, which then fuse to form a single anarchic field. (B) A constant topographical relationship exists between the primordium and a well defined cortical pattern, the zone of discontinuity. (C) The anarchic field primordium divides into 2 unequal parts—to the left, the AZM primordium, and to the right, the paroral primordium, which differentiates into the apical membranelles, the peristomial field, and the buccal tube. (D) Preoral and oblique kineties of the somatic cortex form along the right side of the paroral primordium. (E) Parental oral structures are partially dedifferentiated. Stomatogenesis in C. virens and other heterotrichs is compared.  相似文献

A new species of Tunga (Siphonaptera: Tungidae) collected from armadillos in Argentina is described. The new species is characterized by large and pigmented eyes, the presence of two bristles on antennal segment II, two bristles at the base of the maxilla, and a discoid neosome compressed anteroposteriorly. The gravid female is located in the carapace of the host, perforating the osteoderms. The new species resembles Tunga penetrans and Tunga terasma in general appearance. However, it differs by the greater anteroposterior compression of the neosome, a more angular head, and a manubrium with a pointed proximal end and convex ventral margin (the proximal end of the manubrium is rounded or slightly pointed in T. terasma, and the ventral margin is straight in both T. penetrans and T. terasma). In addition, specimens of T. penetrans have more bristles in antennal segments II and III, and lack bristles in the posterior tibia. This is the first report of a species of Tunga perforating the osteoderms of its host and thereby showing a high degree of specialization. Tunga terasma is recorded for the first time in Argentina; the male is described again and the characteristics of the species amended. This information may be useful in epidemiological studies of diseases caused by species of Tunga.  相似文献

Evening primrose (Oenothera spp.) is grown commercially for its seed oil that contains gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a valuable food supplement and pharmaceutical. There is considerable interest in the potential of genetic engineering to improve yields of GLA in evening primrose, and attention has focused on the current state of tissue‐culture knowledge in this species which is a prerequisite for genetic transformation. Published protocols for the regeneration of plants from leaf or cotyledon material of Oenothera spp. are available, but these prove unsatisfactory when applied to commercial cultivars used in this study. An efficient method for regenerating three commercial cultivars of evening primrose Rigel, Merlin and Vulcan was developed using thidiazuron (TDZ) as a growth regulator. Explants from one month old seedlings were cultivated in vitro; a large number of buds were induced directly from strips of leaves, cotyledons and stems when cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium containing TDZ and indole‐butyric acid (IBA). Shoots that were excised and placed onto MS basal medium, supplemented with IBA, rooted with 85–90% efficiency. Plantlets were transferred to soil after 6–8 wk. TDZ stimulated the regeneration process, and its effects were enhanced when combined with IBA or indole‐3‐acetic acid (IAA). The methods developed may be a useful advance toward improvement of this oil seed crop through genetic modification.  相似文献

Abstract. Flux densities of water vapour and carbon dioxide were measured for a Mediterranean macchia canopy. Results show good agreement between the measured available energy and the sum of latent sensible and heat flux densities determined with the eddy correlation technique. Joint evaluation of the Bowen ratio, aerodynamic resistance, canopy resistance and the 'omega factor' suggests that the macchia canopy is intermediate in aerodynamic roughness between coniferous and deciduous canopies. Maximum daytime carbon flux densities ranged from -14 to -22(μnol m−2 s−1 on a ground area basis. The ratio of transpiration to assimilation (E/A) was a function of incident photo-synthetic photon flux density below about 400 μmol m−2s−1 and above it was fairly constant at 272 mol mol−1 (H2O/CO2). The relationship between carbon influx and canopy conductance was linear. Results show promising applications of the eddy correlation technique for evaluating physiological features of canopies, treated as unitary functional systems.  相似文献

Plants of white lupin (Lupinus albus L cv Multolupa) and soyabean(Glycine max L cv Clarke) were grown in controlled-environmentcabinets, subjected to various stresses and their nodular nitrogenaseactivity and total root respiration measured When these measurementswere used to calculate nodular oxygen diffusion resistance, using a simplified equation for Fick's first law of diffusion,it was found that the apparent resistance of stressed nodulesincreased anomalously with decreases in external oxygen concentrationA new analysis procedure is proposed to alleviate this anomalyThis procedure also uses the simplified Fick's law equationbut includes a respiratory contribution to the total oxygenflux across the diffusion barrier which is not coupled to nitrogenaseactivity Also, resistance is modelled as an exponential functionof external oxygen concentration Use of this analysis procedureproduces realistic values for total resistance and providesa characterisation of this resistance into a minimum value andan adjustment factor for changes in external oxygen It is postulatedthat the additional respiration component represents the activityof nodule cortex cells involved in the diffusion barrier, particularlythat of vascular bundles Oxygen diffusion resistance, nodule, nitrogen fixation, respiration  相似文献

Selection often operates not directly on phenotypic traits but on performance which is important as several traits may contribute to a single performance measure (many‐to‐one mapping). Although largely ignored in the context of selection, this asks for studies that link all relevant phenotypes with performance and fitness. In an enclosure experiment, we studied links between phenotypic traits, swimming performance and survival in two Enallagma damselflies. Predatory dragonflies imposed survival selection for increased swimming propensity and speed only in E. annexum; probably E. aspersum was buffered by the former species’ presence. Accordingly, more circular caudal lamellae, structures involved in generating thrust while swimming, were selected for only in E. annexum. Other phenotypic traits that contributed to swimming speed were apparently not under selection, probably because of many‐to‐one mapping (functional redundancy). Our results indicate that not only the phenotypic distributions of syntopic prey organisms but also many‐to‐one mapping should be considered when documenting phenotype–performance–fitness relationships.  相似文献
