Two subspecies of the tiger salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum,have a distinctive polymorphic life history that can includefour adult morphs as well as typical and cannibalistic larvalmorphs. We evaluated the effect of environment on developmentof larval morphology in two laboratory experiments. In ExperimentI, 180 larvae were raised in individual 3-liter containers andfed one of three food levels. Larvae in Experiment II receivedone of two levels of food, and were raised at three densities:one larva per 3 liters of water (50 containers), three larvaeper 22 liters of water (18 containers), or seven larvae per22 liters of water (18 containers). Cannibalistic morphs developedonly in nine containers at the highest density, and their occurrencewas independent of the two food levels. Our results suggestthe typical and cannibalistic larvae which occur in some populationsof Ambystoma tigrinum nebulosum is an environmentally induceddevelopmental polymorphism that results from some individualsresponding to the environment differently than others. Thisdifference in response may or may not be associated with geneticdifferences between these morphs. Based on our results we cannotdiscriminate between two models that differ in their assumptionsabout the genetic background of individual larvae.  相似文献

The numbers of honeyeaters present at particular sites in the Jarrah forest varied significantly from month to month, with peak abundance occurring between May and September. Numbers also varied from site to site, depending upon the major plant species present. Honeyeater abundance was not limited by arthropod availability, but in many instances was closely correlated with the availability of nectar, particularly that produced by Dryandra sessilis. Large honeyeaters, such as Anthochaera chrysoptera and Phylidonyris novaehollandiae, were generally most abundant at times and sites of greatest nectar production. Small honeyeaters, such as Acanthorhynchus superciliosis, were never abundant but were present for most of the year. The production of nectar between October and December was such that more honeyeaters could have been supported than were actually present. Low numbers at these times can be explained in terms of reduced foraging efficiency that would have resulted from more widely dispersed flowers, and the possible availability of more rewarding nectar resources at other sites.  相似文献

Ultrastructural studies of the unicellular green alga Dunaliellaparva showed the presence of cytoplasmic vacuoles. X-ray microanalysiswas performed on sections of cells which had been freeze substitutedin acetone. It was found that the concentrations of both Naand Cl were much higher in the vacuoles than in the cytoplasm.When cells were grown in 0·4 kmol m–3 NaCl theNa and Cl concentrations in the vacuoles were 349 and 283 molm –3 respectively, whilst cytoplasmic Na and Cl concentrationswere 37 and 26 mol m–3. Corresponding values for cellsgrown in 1·5 kmol m–3 NaCl were 392 mol m–3Na and 325 mol m–3 Cl in the vacuoles and 36 mol m–3Na and 30 mol m–3 Cl in the cytoplasm. Immediately afterexposure to an increase in external salinity Na and Q concentrationsincreased in both vacuoles and cytoplasm. Echmatocrinus from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale of British Columbia was originally described as the earliest crinoid(?) known from the fossil record. Recently, Conway Morris and Ausich & Babcock have questioned whether Echmatocrinus is in fact an echinoderm, comparing it instead to cnidarians with a polyp-like body and pinnate tentacles, and other authors are beginning to use this reinterpretation. We studied the well-preserved holotype of Echmatocrinus brachiatus, two paratypes, and 18 new specimens recovered from different levels in the Burgess Shale sequence at three localities. All are preserved as pyrite films in dark shale with relatively little relief, suggesting a lightly skeletized body. Complete specimens have a long, slightly tapering, large-plated attachment stalk, a conical cup or calyx with numerous small to medium-sized irregular plates, and 7–10 short arms with heavier plating and (in the holotype) soft appendages alternating from opposite sides of several arms. Several morphologic features indicate that Echmatocrinus is an echinoderm and has crinoid affinities: (1) Sutured plates, shown by darker depressed sutures, slightly raised plate centers, and oriented plate ornament, cover all major parts of the body; (2) reticulate surface ornament in the pyrite film on the plates of all specimens matches the ornament in the Burgess Shale edrioasteroid Walcottidiscus, an undoubted echinoderm, but not the pyritized surfaces of other metazoans in the fauna; (3) this distinctive ornament may represent the surface expression of microporous stereom; (4) possible ligament or muscle pads are present between the arm ossicles to fold and unfurl the more heavily plated arms. Within the echinoderms, only crinoids commonly have a calyx attached by a stalk or stem to the substrate and bear erect, moveable, uniserial arms for feeding. Although Echmatocrinus shows some resemblance to octocorals in overall body shape as an attached suspension feeder, almost all the details are different, indicating that Echmatocrinus is most likely unrelated to this group. All complete specimens of Echmatocrinus are attached to hard substrates, either another fossil or skeletal debris. The new specimens indicate that Echmatocrinus was twice as common (about 0.02%) in the Burgess Shale fauna as previously recorded and represents one of the earliest attached, medium-level, skeletized, suspension feeders or microcarnivores in the fossil record.  相似文献

Abstract Two new termites (Isoptera) from the Apicotermes branch of the Apicotermitinae (Termitidae) are described. One, Phoxotermes cerberus , is the type-species of a new genus and the other is a species of Machadotermes Weidner, namely M.rigidus . The phylogenetic relationships of living, calcareous-shelled brachiopods have been assessed on the basis of immunological responses from intracrystalline macromolecules. Calculations of immunological distances between representatives of the order Terebratulida have revealed a primary threefold division which correlates precisely with a proposed subdivision of the order into three superfamilies but refutes attempts to establish a fourth superfamily. This conclusion was confirmed by carrying out immunological investigations of small shell fragments from other brachiopod genera which were so rare that no antisera could be prepared. The immunological results also indicate a fundamental subdivision of the long-looped brachiopods, with one group perhaps being derived from short-looped terebratuloids rather than long-looped terebratelloids. Sero-taxonomy of skeletal macromolecules provides an ideal method of acquiring molecular phylogenetic data in many groups because a large number of taxa can be surveyed in a short period of time, and microscopic pieces of shell contain sufficient antigenic determinants for many reactions. The technique can also be applied to specimens which have been stored without special treatment in museum collections, making the technique particularly applicable to rare taxa for which no other form of molecular data is available. □ Immunology, Brachiopoda, taxonomy, intracrystalline molecules.  相似文献

Abstract: We tested whether presence of white-winged doves (Zenaida asiatica) and mourning doves (Z. macroura) in South Texas, USA, was associated with any of the land cover types recorded in the 2001 National Land Classification Database. We used the point-transect method to conduct presence—absence surveys for both species at 236 points encompassing 744 observations. Within predefined land cover types surrounding each survey point, we used Geographic Information Systems to determine the proportions of each land cover type present. We used randomization tests to compare proportions of land cover types present at points with and without doves. We used Program DISTANCE to estimate dove densities at survey points and to test whether certain land cover types were associated with greater dove densities. Our results indicated white-winged dove occurrence in South Texas was positively associated with urban land and cropland, whereas mourning dove occurrence was positively associated with cropland. For land cover types found to be associated with dove presence, estimated density for each dove species increased as the proportion of associated land cover type increased. These results can assist wildlife biologists in the development of a more efficient and targeted protocol for censusing doves. In addition, our methods can be applied to other species across several geographic areas and landscape scales.  相似文献
