The weight and component losses of Pinus
radiata wood after decay by six species of white-rot and two species of brown-rot fungi for periods varying from 30 to 360 days were evaluated. Three groups of decayed wood samples were identified based on the principal component analysis (PCA) of the data on their weight and component losses. Selective lignin degradation was produced by Ceriporiopsis
subvermispora and Punctularia
atropurpurascens within different periods, the longest one lasting 90 days, and also by Merulius
tremellosus after 90 days of biodegradation. Comparing the data on biodegradation of P.
radiata by Trametes
versicolor with the ones reported for biodegradation of Eucalyptus
globulus and E.
grandis indicated that P.

Question: How does groundwater input affect plant distribution in Alnus glutinosa (black alder) carrs? Location: Alder carrs along the river Meuse, SE Netherlands. Methods: Three types of site, characterized by groundwater flow, were sampled in 17 A. glutinosa carrs. Vegetation and abiotic data (soil and water chemistry) were collected and analysed using a Canonical Correspondence Analysis. Based on the results, a laboratory experiment tested the effect of groundwater input (Ca2+) on pore water chemistry (NH4+ availability). Results: Environmental factors indicating groundwater input (Ca2+ and Fe2+), correlating with the NH+4 concentration in the pore water, best explained the variation in plant distribution. NH4+ availability was determined by Ca2+ input via the groundwater and subsequent competition for exchange sites in the sediment. As a result, nutrient‐poor seepage locations fully fed by groundwater were dominated by small iron resistant plants such as Caltha palustris and Equisetum fluviatile. More nutrient‐rich locations, fed by a combination of groundwater and surface water, allowed the growth of taller iron resistant plant species such as Carex paniculata. Nutrient‐rich locations with stagnating surface water were hardly fed by groundwater, allowing the occurrence of fast growing and less iron tolerant wetland grasses such as Glyceria fluitans and G. maxima. Conclusion: Groundwater input affects plant composition in A. glutinosa carrs along the river Meuse by determining nutrient availability (ammonium) and concentrations of toxic iron. 相似文献

Abstract. The sexual system of two peppermint shrimps, Lysmata bahia and Lysmata intermedia, inhabiting intertidal fossil coral terraces at Bocas del Toro, on the Caribbean coast of Panama, was examined. Dissections suggested that the population of each species consisted of functional males and functional simultaneous hermaphrodites. Males have cincinulli and appendices masculinae on the first and second pair of pleopods, respectively, gonopores located at the coxae of the third pair of walking legs, and ovotestes with a well‐developed male portion full of sperm, but an undeveloped female portion. Hermaphrodites lacked appendices masculinae and cincinulli. However, they have male gonopores and ovotestes with well‐developed ovaries full of mature oocytes and testes with sperm. When hermaphrodites were maintained in pairs, both molted and spawned eggs (to beneath abdomen) that continued developing after 3 d, demonstrating that hermaphrodites can reproduce as males and inseminate other hermaphrodites acting as females. The possibility of self‐fertilization or parthenogenetic reproduction was tested and disregarded, because hermaphrodites reared in isolation spawned oocytes that failed to develop, disappearing from the abdomen after 2 d. Males reared in pairs mature as hermaphrodites in <50 d, showing the ability of males to mature as hermaphrodites. These results demonstrate that L. bahia and L. intermedia are protandric simultaneous hermaphrodites, as reported for all species of this genus whose sexual system has been examined. However, the studied species featured a lifestyle, termed “tropical‐low abundance,” here not recognized previously for the genus; they occur in low abundances in tropical environments, they do not develop symbiotic associations with sessile invertebrates, and they are not conspicuously colored. Information on the sexual systems and lifestyles of more species needs to be examined before these observations can be placed into a comparative context within the genus. 相似文献

The secretion of proteinaceous toxins is a widespread characteristic in environmental and laboratory yeast isolates, a phenomenon called "killer system". The killer phenotype (K+) can be encoded by extrachromosomal genetic elements (EGEs) as double stranded DNA or RNA molecules (dsDNA, dsRNA) or in nuclear genes. The spectrum of action and the activity of killer toxins are influenced by temperature, salinity and pH of media. In the present work we determined the existence of K+ in a collection of S. cerevisiae and P. anomala yeasts isolated from environmental, industrial and clinical sources. The assays were performed in strains belonging to three yeast genera used as sensitive cells and under a wide range of pH and temperatures. Approximately 51 % of isolates tested showed toxicity against at least one sensitive yeast strain under the conditions tested. The K+ P. anomala isolates showed a wide spectrum of action and two of them had toxic activity against strains of the three yeast genera assayed, including C. albicans strains. In all S. cerevisiae K+ isolates an extrachromosomal dsRNA molecule (4.2 Kb) was observed, contrary to P. anomala K+ isolates, which do not possess any EGEs. The K+ phenotype is produced by an exported protein factor and the kinetics of killer activity production was similar in all isolates with high activity in the log phase of growth, decaying in the stationary phase. 相似文献

Background
Visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil is caused by the protozoan Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi and it is transmitted by sandfly of the genus Lutzomyia. Dogs are an important domestic reservoir, and control of the transmission of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) to humans includes the elimination of infected dogs. However, though dogs are considered to be an important element in the transmission cycle of Leishmania, the identification of infected dogs representing an immediate risk for transmission has not been properly evaluated. Since it is not possible to treat infected dogs, they are sacrificed when a diagnosis of VL is established, a measure that is difficult to accomplish in highly endemic areas. In such areas, parameters that allow for easy identification of reservoirs that represents an immediate risk for transmission is of great importance for the control of VL transmission. In this study we aimed to identify clinical parameters, reinforced by pathological parameters that characterize dogs with potential to transmit the parasite to the vector.Results
The major clinical manifestations of visceral leishmaniasis in dogs from an endemic area were onicogriphosis, skin lesions, conjunctivitis, lymphadenopathy, and weight loss. The transmission potential of these dogs was assessed by xenodiagnosis using Lutzomyia longipalpis. Six of nine symptomatic dogs were infective to Lutzomyia longipalpis while none of the five asymptomatic dogs were infective to the sandfly. Leishmania amastigotes were present in the skin of all clinically symptomatic dogs, but absent in asymptomatic dogs. Higher parasite loads were observed in the ear and ungueal region, and lower in abdomen. The inflammatory infiltrate was more intense in the ears and ungueal regions of both symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs. In clinically affected dogs in which few or none Leishmania amastigotes were observed, the inflammatory infiltrate was constituted mainly of lymphocytes and macrophages. When many parasites were present, the infiltrate was also comprised of lymphocytes and macrophages, as well as a larger quantity of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs).Conclusion
Dogs that represent an immediate risk for transmission of Leishmania in endemic areas present clinical manifestations that include onicogriphosis, skin lesions, conjunctivitis, lymphadenopathy, and weight loss. Lymphadenopathy in particular was a positive clinical hallmark since it was closely related to the positive xenodiagnosis.276.

A series of constrained pentapeptide analogues of the fragment Abeta(31-35) has been prepared using solid phase synthesis protocols. The incorporation of fungal laccases into novel applications has been delayed mainly due to their intrinsic sensitivity towards halides and alkaline conditions. In order to explore new sources of enzymes we evaluated the multipotent polyphenol oxidase PPO1 from the marine bacterium Marinomonas mediterranea. Here we report that, in contrast to its fungal counterparts, PPO1 remained functional above neutral pH presenting high specificity for phenolic compounds, in particular for methoxyl-substituted mono-phenols and catechols. These properties, in addition to its tolerance towards chloride (up to 1 M) and its elevated redox potential at neutral pH (0.9 V), suggest this enzyme may be an interesting candidate for specific applications such as the Amperometric determination of phenolic compounds and bio-fuel cells. 相似文献

Reconstitution of mitochondrial calcium transport activity requires the incorporation of membrane proteins into a lipidic ambient. Calcium uptake has been measured previously using Cytochrome oxidase vesicles. The enrichment of these vesicles with cardiolipin, an acidic phospholipid that is found only in the inner mitochondrial membrane of eukaryotic cells, strongly inhibits calcium transport, in remarkable contrast with the activation effect that cardiolipin exerts upon other mitochondrial transporters and enzymes. The relation of the inactivation of calcium transport to the physical state of the bilayer was studied by following the polarization changes of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) and by flow cytometry in the cardiolipin-enriched liposomes with incorporated mitochondrial solubilized proteins. Non-bilayer molecular arrangements in the cardiolipin-supplemented liposomes, detected by flow cytometry, may produce the fluidity changes observed by fluorescence polarization of DPH. Fluidity changes correlate with the abolition of calcium uptake, but have no effect on the establishment of a membrane potential in the vesicles required for calcium transport activity. Changes in the membrane structure and uniporter function are observed in the combined presence of cardiolipin and calcium leading to a modified lipid configuration. 相似文献

Nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions and chloroplast trnL intron and trnL/trnF spacer and matK sequences were used from 86 accessions to assess relationships among 31 European and South American species of Hypochaeris plus 18 representatives of related genera of tribe Cichorieae. The ITS tree shows high resolution compared to that of the maternally inherited trnL intron, trnL/F spacer, and matK sequences. The ITS and the combined tree reveal clades that agree well with sections of the genus established previously on morphological and cytological grounds, except for H. robertia, which groups with Leontodon helveticus and L. autumnalis. Monophyly of species of Hypochaeris from South America is strongly supported by both ITS and the joint matrix of ITS, trnL, and matK data. European species lie basal to South American taxa, which suggests that species in South America evolved from a single introduction from European progenitors and not from H. robertia as suggested previously. Low levels of sequence divergence among South American taxa suggest a pattern of rapid speciation, in contrast to much greater divergence among European representatives. Different species of Leontodon form two different clades that are also supported by chromosome numbers and morphology. Both nuclear and chloroplast markers suggest that Helminthotheca, Leontodon, and Picris are closely related to each other as well as to Hypochaeris. 相似文献
