SUMMARY. 1. Several dozen summer meltwater streams are located in the McMurdo Sound region (c. 78°S 165°E) of southern Victoria Land. They are characterized by a highly variable flow regime at diel, seasonal and annual times caleis; wide fluctuations in temperature and nutrient content; and a very simple epilithic community of cyanophytes ( Nostoc spp., Oscillatoriaceae), bacteria, fungi and microherbivores.
2. The epilithon survives the dark Antarctic winter as dry, frozen mats which provide a large inoculum for growth the following summer. This overwintering assemblage retains a high metabolic capacity and responds rapidly to rehydration.
3. In a series of artificial substrate experiments, biomass accumulation rates were generally less than 0.1 In units d−1. Colonization and growth on the substrates was inversely related to the suspended sediment load of the stream. There was also a visual correspondence between per cent algal cover of the natural streambed and the clarity of the streamwater. Sloughing losses may limit community biomass, particularly in the turbid flowing waters.
4. During running water conditions the mature communities had very low gross photosynthetic rates per unit chlorophyll (<0,1 μg C (μg chl a .h)−1 and per unit carbon (<0,2 μg C (mg biomass C.h)−1). Respiration was generally a high percentage (up to 92%) of gross photosynthesis, which probably reflected the high population densities of microheterotrophs in the community.
5. The floristically simple epilithic mats slowly accumulate to extreme biomass levels (>20 μg chl a cm −2, <20 mg C cm−2). Production rates per unit biomass are low, probably in response to the cold temperatures of the Antarctic stream environment, and the accumulated biomass represents several seasons of growth.  相似文献

Coral reefs have reconstituted themselves after previous large sea-level variations, and climate changes. For the past 6000 years of unusually stable sea-level, reefs have grown without serious interruptions. During recent decades, however, new stresses threaten localized devastation of many reefs. A new period of global climate change is occurring, stimulated by anthropogenic increases in greenhouse gases. Coral reefs will cope well with predicted sea-level rises of 4.5 cm per decade, but reef islands will not. Higher sea levels will provide corals with greater room for growth across reef flats, but there are no foreseeable mechanisms for reef island growth to keep pace with sea-level rise, therefore many low islands may ultimately become uninhabitable. Climate change will introduce localized variations in weather patterns, but changes to individual reefs cannot be predicted. Reefs on average should cope well with regional climate change, as they have coped with similar previous fluctuations. Air temperature increases of 0.2–0.3 °C/decade will induce slower increases in sea-surface temperatures, which may cause localized, or regional increases in coral bleaching. Changes in rainfall will impact on reefs near land masses. Likewise, increased storms and variations in El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) may stress some reefs, but not others. The greatest impact of climate change will be a synergistic enhancement of direct anthropogenic stresses (excessive sediment and pollution from the land; over-fishing, especially via destructive methods; mining of coral rock and sand; and engineering modifications), which currently cause most damage to coral reefs. Many of the world's reefs have been degraded and more will be damaged as anthropogenic impacts increase under the ‘demophoric’ increases in population (demos) and economic (phoric) activity. This biotic and habitat loss will result in severe economic and social losses. Reefs, however, have considerable recovery powers and losses can be minimized by effective management of direct human impacts and reducing indirect threats of global climate change.  相似文献

A survey of foliar diseases of spring barley in England and Wales in 1967   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
A total of 5,250 acres of spring barley was sampled in proportion to the barley acreage in each of eight regions. The percentage leaf area ‘affected’ by each disease was recorded for the first (flag) and second leaves at a growth stage when the grain was milky ripe. The operation was automated by punching the data directly on to computer paper tape and a programme was written to analyse the results. Mildew was found to be the most important disease, causing an average loss in yield of approximately 18 %, followed in descending order by brown rust 3%, leaf blotch 1 %, yellow rust 1 %, halo spot 1 %. The total loss due to foliar diseases was estimated to be 20–25% of the national barley yield. Diseases were more severe in the southern than northern regions, e.g. mildew severity was three times higher because of the greater popularity of mildew-susceptible varieties, and the prevalence of weather more conducive to mildew development. Disease severity was not related to previous cropping, and in general the February-sown crops had more mildew than the April-sown crops.  相似文献

The function and evolution of repertoires in songbirds is still not clearly understood. This study involves the great reed warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus and playback of recorded song to both captive males and females under controlled laboratory conditions. Females were implanted with oestradiol and the copulation solicitation display used as an index of sexual response. Males were not implanted and crest-raising used as an index of aggressive response. Two types of songs were used (short and long) and two sizes of repertoire (high and low). Females only responded to long songs, and responded significantly more to high than low repertoires. It was concluded that long songs have a sexual function and that high repertoires are the result of intersexual selection through female choice. Males responded to short and long songs, but did not discriminate between high and low repertoires. Adding a live male to the experiment made no difference to female responses but males responded significantly more. When field studies are also taken into consideration the overall conclusion is that song quality and repertoire size is particularly important in female choice, and that short songs and a male presence are more important in aggressive behaviour. Integration of both field and laboratory studies on males and females should lead to more rigorous testing of hypotheses concerning the function and evolution of bird songs.  相似文献

For surface fluxes of carbon dioxide, the net daily flux is the sum of daytime and nighttime fluxes of approximately the same magnitude and opposite direction. The net flux is therefore significantly smaller than the individual flux measurements and error assessment is critical in determining whether a surface is a net source or sink of carbon dioxide. For carbon dioxide flux measurements, it is an occasional misconception that the net flux is measured as the difference between the net upward and downward fluxes (i.e. a small difference between large terms). This is not the case. The net flux is the sum of individual (half-hourly or hourly) flux measurements, each with an associated error term. The question of errors and uncertainties in long-term flux measurements of carbon and water is addressed by first considering the potential for errors in flux measuring systems in general and thus errors which are relevant to a wide range of timescales of measurement. We also focus exclusively on flux measurements made by the micrometeorological method of eddy covariance. Errors can loosely be divided into random errors and systematic errors, although in reality any particular error may be a combination of both types. Systematic errors can be fully systematic errors (errors that apply on all of the daily cycle) or selectively systematic errors (errors that apply to only part of the daily cycle), which have very different effects. Random errors may also be full or selective, but these do not differ substantially in their properties. We describe an error analysis in which these three different types of error are applied to a long-term dataset to discover how errors may propagate through long-term data and which can be used to estimate the range of uncertainty in the reported sink strength of the particular ecosystem studied.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Experimental studies were undertaken to ascertain the vector potential of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus Neumann and Amblyomma variegatum Fabricius for Thogoto (THO) and Dhori (DHO) viruses, candidate members of the Orthomyxoviridae. In the first set of experiments, ticks were infected orally by feeding on viraemic hamsters. THO virus replicated in R.appendiculatus and A.variegatum, persisted trans-stadially in both tick species, and was transmitted to susceptible hosts during feeding. In contrast, both R. appendiculatus and A. variegatum were refractory to per os infection by DHO virus. In the second set of experiments, engorged R. appendiculatus and A. variegatum nymphs were parenterally inoculated with DHO virus. The virus persisted transstadially in both tick species and was transmitted by bite to susceptible hosts. These results indicate that the midgut acts as a barrier to per os infection of R.appendiculatus and A. variegatum by DHO virus. However, when this barrier is bypassed, i.e. by parenteral inoculation, both R.appendiculatus and A.variegatum can serve as efficient vectors of DHO virus.  相似文献

Two methods were used to investigate the loss in grain yield associated with specific levels of leaf blotch. Yields from plots sprayed with fungicide were compared with those from unsprayed plots and yields of varieties of different susceptibility to the disease were compared with one another. A disease assessment key is presented, which was used to assess the percentage laminar area of the top two leaves affected by the disease. A linear relationship between disease on the upper two leaves and yield was established. Results from nine trials showed a consistent relationship between the disease level, at growth stage 11·1 (Feekes scale), and loss in yield. The loss in yield expressed as a percentage of the yield of an uninfected crop was equivalent to approximately two-thirds of the percentage of the flag-leaf area visibly infected, or one-half of the infected area on the second leaf. The predicted loss in yield is the average of these two estimates.  相似文献

The interaction between yucca plants and yucca moths has been one of the focal model systems investigated in the study of pollination mutualism and coevolution, especially in terms of understanding the prevention of overexploitation by mutualist partners. Yuccas have the ability to assess the number of eggs placed by pollinators into their ovaries, and can preferentially abort those flowers that would have many moth larvae consuming yucca seeds. Previous phylogenetic research identified a rapid radiation of moth species that corresponded with shifts in the interaction with their host plants. These shifts led to the evolution of moth species that circumvent the egg detection method used by yuccas to limit seed damage. In particular, some pollinator species deposit their eggs so that they are undetectable by the plants, whereas other species are ‘cheaters’ that have lost the ability to pollinate, yet deposit eggs into developing fruit rather than flowers. The evolution of these new species happened so quickly that the phylogeny of the moths has remained unresolved despite repeated attempts with standard Sanger sequencing of mtDNA loci and AFLP marker generation. Here, we use extensive analyses of RAD‐seq data to determine the phylogenetic relationships among yucca moth species. The results provide a robust phylogenetic framework that identifies the evolutionary relationships among shifts in egg‐laying strategies, as well as determining the closest pollinating relatives to the cheater species. Based on the obtained phylogeny, a shift in egg‐laying strategy that avoided the overexploitation regulatory mechanism used by yucca plants was a precursor for the evolution of two species with cheating behaviour.  相似文献

Xylem cavitation is a frequent event, but since resistance to flow does not generally increase in vivo, reversal must also occur even under negative potentials. We demonstrated that this can occur in excised wood. Our results suggest that refilling of cavitated tracheids at negative water potentials may result from a change in equilibrium between gas concentrations, water potential and surface tension at the embolism interface. Excised branch-wood specimens from small trees of Pinus sylvestris were dried on the bench to a range of relative water contents and then rehydrated in a permeability apparatus using ultra-filtered, de-aerated water as permeant. Water inflow and outflow were measured gravimetrically by recording the gain or loss from two reservoirs held on balances. Flow was induced through the specimen by holding the balances at different levels, while an overall negative water potential could be imposed by raising the specimen above the inflow/outflow reservoirs. Changes in water content of the specimen were calculated as the difference between inflow and outflow. The time-course data for both relative water content and permeability were fitted to an exponential function to give initial and final estimates and a time constant. Rehydration occurred at all imposed water potentials, but the speed of recovery was affected at lower potentials. Where drying of the specimen was more protracted, permeability was initially lower but also recovered during permeation. Both flow and de-aeration were necessary for complete rehydration. A model requiring new information on gas concentrations and transport coefficients is suggested.  相似文献
