Abstract Diapausing insect species have evolved a great diversity of life cycles, although overwintering occurs at a single development stage within most species. Understanding why diapause has evolved towards a given life stage requires investigation of both the ecological and physiological attributes. Notably, it is suggested that adult overwintering is more energy‐demanding than larval overwintering but it brings fitness gains by allowing adults to be synchronized with their seasonal requisites through an early spring emergence. This hypothesis is tested in field conditions in the nut weevil Curculio nucum, whose life cycle comprises an obligate 2‐year, nonfeeding underground phase, including a larval, followed by an adult, overwintering. In this species, adult wintering leads to an early spring emergence; at first glance, however, this does not enhance synchronization between weevils and their host because adults emerge more than 1 month before starting to breed. It is suggested that adult overwintering ultimately evolved in response to the phenology of the host, by allowing females to oviposit in nuts before their full sclerotinization. Adult overwintering appears to be costly because adults postpone reproduction for 1 year, incur a significant weight loss and require feeding before egg laying. Surprisingly, lipids are unaffected during diapause, lipogenesis even being likely in the summer metamorphosis. These results suggest that the lipids involved in egg production may entirely come from the larval stages, whereas the other nutrients are acquired through adult feeding but this remains to be tested.  相似文献

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is an important crop providing a valuable nutrition source for people in many countries including the Middle East and North Africa. In recent years, the amount of rain in North Africa and especially in the Tunisian palm grove areas has dropped significantly. We investigated the growth and cell wall remodelling of fruits harvested at three key development stages from trees grown with or without water supply. During development, cell wall solubilization and remodelling was characterized by a decrease of the degree of methylesterification of pectin, an important loss of galactose content and a reduction of the branching of xylan by arabinose in irrigated condition. Water deficit had a profound effect on fruit size, pulp content, cell wall composition and remodelling. Loss of galactose content was not as important, arabinose content was significantly higher in the pectin‐enriched extracts from non‐irrigated condition, and the levels of methylesterification of pectin and O‐acetylation of xyloglucan were lower than in irrigated condition. The lower levels of hydrophobic groups (methylester and O‐acetyl) and the less intensive degradation of the hydrophilic galactan, arabinan and arabinogalactan in the cell wall may be implicated in maintaining the hydration status of the cells under water deficit.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Distress calls are signals effective over a long distance. They are well known to evoke interspecific reactions. We suggest that the interspecificity phenomenon results from the use of similar laws of decoding by the species concerned. These laws must take into account the transmission channel which always has a great influence on long-range communication. We tested our hypothesis by broadcasting simplified synthetic calls to two species of birds: the herring gull and the starling. The various calls differed in terms of frequency modulation (FM). Two main conclusions emerged from this series of tests:

1. The parameters used for recognition are not sophisticated: a simple slope applied to a carrier frequency that corresponds to the acoustic shape of a distress call is sufficient to confer a distress meaning to the signal. The basic rules are the same for the gull and the starling, with differences only in the acceptance level of the species.

2. The system of recognition is based upon parameters not altered by the environment: the birds make use of the slow frequency modulations (FMI). In contrast, the fast frequency sweeps (FMII) which are modified during propagation do not seem to be utilised. The use of these characteristics of distress calls for recognition allows interspecificity and maximum efficiency for propagation over long distances.

Une particularité des cris de détresse est leur action interspécifique. Nous suggérons que cette interspécificité résulte de l'emploi d'une loi de décodage qui est commune à plusieures espèces. Cette loi doit tenir compte des propriétés du canal car ce dernier a toujours une grande influence sur les signaux de longue portée acoustique, tels que les cris de détresse.

Pour tester cette hypothèse, nous avons fait appel à deux espèces: le Goéland argenté (Larus argentatus) et l'Etourneau (Sturnus vulgaris). Les signaux que nous avons diffusés étaient obtenus par synthèse. Ils étaient plus simples que les signaux naturels et différaient par la modulation de fréquence (FM).

Deux résultats principaux émergent de ces séries d'expériences:

1. Le procédé de décodage n'est pas sophistiqué: une simple pente appliquée à la porteuse est nécessaire et il suffit de mimer, meme approximativement, la pente rencontrée dans les signaux naturels, Cette règle fondamentale est commune au Goéland et à l'Etourneau. Les petites différences que l'on peut néanmoins observer sont relatives aux seuils de décodage.

2. Le décodage repose sur des paramètres qui ne sont pas altérés par le canal: l'oiseau utilise la modulation lente de fréquence. Par contre les excursions rapides de fréquence semblent n'étre d'aucune utilité lors du décodage.

En conclusion, l'universalité des paramètres impliqués et de la loi de décodage est responsable de l'interspécificité des signaux de détresse. Les simplifications liées à cette universalité résultent des contraintes imposées par le canal.  相似文献

This article reviews the published studies on urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) as a biomarker of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in work environments. Sampling and analysis strategies as well as a methodology for determining biological exposure indices (BEIs) of 1-OHP in urine for different work environments are proposed for the biological monitoring of occupational exposure to PAHs. Owing to the kinetics of absorption of pyrene by different exposure routes and excretion of 1-OHP in urine, in general, 1-OHP urinary excretion levels increase during the course of a workday, reaching maximum values 3-9 h after the end of work. When the contribution of dermal exposure is important, post-shift 1-OHP excretion can however be lower than pre-shift levels in the case where a worker has been exposed occupationally to PAHs on the day prior to sampling. In addition, 1-OHP excretion levels in either pre-shift, post-shift or evening samples increase during the course of a work-week, levelling off after three consecutive days of work. Consequently, ideally, for a first characterization of a work environment and for an indication of the major exposure route, considering a 5-day work-week (Monday to Friday), the best sampling strategy would be to collect all micturitions over 24 h starting on Monday morning. Alternatively, collection of pre-shift, post-shift and evening urine samples on the first day of the work-week and at the end of the work-week is recommended. For routine monitoring, pre-shift samples on Monday and post-shift samples on Friday should be collected when pulmonary exposure is the main route of exposure. On the other hand, pre-shift samples on Monday and Friday should be collected when the contribution of skin uptake is important. The difference between beginning and end of work-week excretion will give an indication of the average exposure over the workweek. Pre-shift samples on the first day of the work-week will indicate background values, and, hence, reflect general environment exposure and body burden of pyrene and/or its metabolites. On the other hand, since PAH profile can vary substantially in different work sites, a single BEI cannot apply to all workplaces. A simple equation was therefore developed to establish BEIs for workers exposed to PAHs in different work environments by using a BEI already established for a given work environment and by introducing a correction factor corresponding to the ratio of the airborne concentration of the sum of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) equivalent to that of pyrene. The sum of BaP equivalent concentrations represents the sum of carcinogenic PAH concentrations expressed as BaP using toxic equivalent factors. Based on a previously estimated BEI of 2.3 μmol 1-OHP mol-1 creatinine for coke-oven workers, BEIs of 4.4, 8.0 and 9.8 μmol 1-OHP mol-1 creatinine were respectively calculated for vertical pin Söderberg workers, anode workers and pre-bake workers of aluminium plants and a BEI of 1.2 μmol 1-OHP mol-1 creatinine was estimated for iron foundry workers. This approach will allow the potential risk of cancer in individuals occupationally exposed to PAHs to be assessed better.  相似文献

The Monogenea, which is divided into two clades, namely the Monopisthocotylea and Polyopisthocotylea, is a highly diversified group of platyhelminth parasites that infest mainly actinopterygian and chondrichthyan fishes but also, to a lesser extent, freshwater sarcopterygian hosts. Euzetrema knoepffleri Combes, 1965 (Monogenea: Iagotrematidae), which is specific to the salamander Euproctus montanus Savi, 1838 is among the rare monopisthocotylean parasites infesting tetrapod hosts. We sequenced the complete 18S rRNA gene of this parasite to infer its phylogenetic position within the Monopisthocotylea. Our results provide a new insight for coevolutionary scenarios between monopisthocotyleans and gnathostomatan hosts. Indeed, the basal position of E. knoepffleri within a subgroup of the Monopisthocotylea which comprises two clusters that both include parasites of the Actinopterygii and Chondrichthyes, suggests a very old association between the Iagotrematidae and tetrapods. Furthermore, if we take into account a recent view of Gnathostomata evolution where bony and cartilaginous fishes are regarded as a monophyletic group, it could be argued that the Iagotrematidae arose very early, during the fish–tetrapod transition, as did the Polystomatidae, the only monogenean family of the Polyopisthocotylea that infests sarcopterygian hosts.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 80 , 727–734.  相似文献

French abyssal campaigns SEABED 2 and DEMERABY to the Central Atlantic Ocean collected new specimens of the largest known amphipod Alicella gigantea Chevreux in baited traps and for the first time by bottom trawling. Type material from the Madeira Abyssal Plain is fully redescribed. New Atlantic material and the new Pacific material reported by other authors elsewhere are compared to the types. Some aspects of feeding are investigated and an analysis of the stomach contents of a giant male specimen provides an estimate of minimum feeding rate for this necrophagous amphipod.
Les campagnes abyssales françaises SEABED 2 et DEMERABY ont permis de récolter dans l'Atlantique Central, par nasses appâtées et pour la première fois par chalutage benthique, de nouveaux exemplaires du plus grand amphipode connu Alicella gigantea Chevreux. Le matérieltype de l'espèce provenant de la Plaine Abyssale de Madeirc est redécrit en détail et le nouvcau matérial atlantique lui est comparé, ainsi que le nouveau matériel du Pacifique décrit par d'autres. Certains aspects de la nutrition sont abordés et l analyse du contenu stomacal d'un exemplaire male géant a permis d'estimer le taux de nutrition minimum de cet amphipode nécrophage.  相似文献

1. Invertebrates and aquatic plants often play a key role in biogeochemical processes occurring at the water–sediment interface of aquatic ecosystems. However, few studies have investigated the respective influences of plants and bioturbating animals on ecological processes (nutrient fluxes, benthic oxygen uptake, microbial activities) occurring in freshwater sediments. 2. We developed a laboratory experiment in aquaria to quantify the effects of (i) one invertebrate acting as a bioturbator (Tubifex tubifex); (ii) one submersed plant with a high sediment‐oxygenating potential (Myriophyllum spicatum) and (iii) one submersed plant with a low sediment‐oxygenating potential (Elodea canadensis). 3. The tubificid worms significantly increased the fluxes of nitrogen at the water–sediment interface (influx of nitrate, efflux of ammonium), whereas the two plant species did not have significant influences on these nitrogen fluxes. The differences in nitrogen fluxes between tubificid worms and plants were probably due to the bioirrigation process caused by T. tubifex, which increased water exchanges at the water–sediment interface. Tubifex tubifex and M. spicatum produced comparable reductions of nutrient concentrations in pore water and comparable stimulations of benthic oxygen uptake and microbial communities (percentages of active eubacteria and hydrolytic activity) whereas E. canadensis had a very weak influence on these variables. These differences between the two plants were due to their contrasting abilities to increase oxygen in sediments by radial oxygen losses (release of oxygen from roots). 4. Our study suggests that the bioirrigation process and radial oxygen loss are major functional traits affecting biogeochemical functioning at the water–sediment interface of wetlands.  相似文献

Plant density and sowing date were shown to affect branchingin spring-sown white lupin (Lupinus albusL.), but the responsevaried among environments. The patterns of primary and secondarybranching in the cv. Lublanc were studied as a function of boththe number of axillary buds and the plant growth rate. Fieldexperiments that used a wide range of sowing dates and plantdensities to alter plant architecture were conducted over 5years, and these were supplemented with data from additionalglasshouse and growth cabinet experiments. The number of axillary buds on the main stem or primary branches,which determined the potential number of branches, increasedlinearly with the number of nodes. In situations where all axillarybuds did not produce branches, it was found that the numberof primary and secondary branches produced was related to theplant growth rate at the beginning of branch elongation. Knowledgeof the number of axillary buds improved the analysis of theinteraction between cultural practices and environmental conditionson plant architecture. The proliferation of GM16 and 4CDTras-transformed newborn rat adrenocortical (RTAC) cells and Y1 mouse adrenal tumor cells was inhibited by beticolins, the fungal toxins extracted fromCercospora beticola, at submicromolar concentrations in a dose-dependent manner. Inhibitory concentrations for half the maximum inhibition were 150, 75 and 25 nm for beticolin-1 and 230, 150 and 50 nm for beticolin-2 in GM16, 4CDT and Y1 cells respectively. Beticolins strongly inhibited the production of 11β-hydroxysteroids on the second and third days of treatment in a dose-dependent manner between 0.1 and 1 μm . Beticolins were shown by confocal microscopy to be localized in cytoplasmic organelles about 30–40 min after treatment. This finding favors a direct action of beticolins on mitochondrial steroid 11β-hydroxylase albeit another less direct mechanism involving a cytoplasmic signaling pathway cannot be excluded.  相似文献

1. The patterns of multiple paternity among the progeny of females are key properties of genetic mating systems. Female multiple mating should evolve due to direct or indirect benefits, but it may also partly be driven by the encounter rate with different potential mates. 2. In this study this hypothesis was experimentally tested in the European earwig (Forficula auricularia L.) by establishing experimental mating groups that differed in the number of males and females (i.e. density). The number of sires and mean sibling relatedness in each clutch were estimated using microsatellite‐based paternity analysis. 3. As predicted, the mean number of sires per clutch was significantly increased, and sibling relatedness decreased, in the higher density treatment where more potential male mates were available. This change was less than proportional to the number of males in the mating groups, indicating that mechanisms limiting multiple paternity in large mating groups were involved. There were no significant relationships between female reproductive success or male siring success with morphology (body size, weight, and forceps size). 4. The present results show that multiple paternity in F. auricularia clutches is partly determined by the availability of male mates and suggest that this effect is modulated by mechanisms in males and/or females that limit multiple paternity.  相似文献
