Behavioural and ecological correlates of natural hybridization in birds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Hybridization and speciation are central to evolutionary biology. Although birds have been studied more thoroughly than any other vertebrate class, there have still been few macro-evolutionary analyses. Here, I present results based on 65 phylogenetically independent hybrid types from the western Palearctic, focusing on behavioural and ecological correlates of hybridization. The main results are as follows. (1) Hybrids that are easier to detect were more often reported. (2) A positive correlation exists between population size (mean of both parent species) and the number of hybrids. After accounting for these confounding variables in a General Linear Model, I found (3) that sympatric species pairs produced fewer hybrids than did parapatric species pairs and (4) pairs with at least one of the parent species reported as endangered produced a greater number of hybrids whereas (5) species pairs with high male parental (paternal) care produced fewer hybrids. Other variables were excluded by a stepwise procedure in the following order: sexual dichromatism; body weight differences; publication bias. Phylogenetic information was available for a small number of hybrids but did not influence the results.  相似文献

Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) is a broadly distributed European conifer tree whose history has been intensively studied by means of fossil records to infer the location of full‐glacial refugia and the main routes of postglacial colonization. Here we use recently compiled fossil pollen data as a template to examine how past demographic events have influenced the species’ modern genetic diversity. Variation was assessed in the mitochondrial nad1 gene containing two minisatellite regions. Among the 369 populations (4876 trees) assayed, 28 mitochondrial variants were identified. The patterns of population subdivision superimposed on interpolated fossil pollen distributions indicate that survival in separate refugia and postglacial colonization has led to significant structuring of genetic variation in the southern range of the species. The populations in the northern range, on the other hand, showed a shallow genetic structure consistent with the fossil pollen data, suggesting that the vast northern range was colonized from a single refugium. Although the genetic diversity decreased away from the putative refugia, there were large differences between different colonization routes. In the Alps, the diversity decreased over short distances, probably as a result of population bottlenecks caused by the presence of competing tree species. In northern Europe, the diversity was maintained across large areas, corroborating fossil pollen data in suggesting that colonization took place at high population densities. The genetic diversity increased north of the Carpathians, probably as a result of admixture of expanding populations from two separate refugia.  相似文献

The aphid parasitoid Lysiphlebus fabarum is suspected to form distinct, host‐associated lineages and exhibits poorly understood variation in reproductive mode including thelytokous and arrhenotokous populations. As a tool to study these issues, we developed 11 polymorphic microsatellite markers. The observed number of alleles ranged from two to 35, and the observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.01 to 0.64. Cross‐species amplification tests demonstrated their utility for several congeners, but revealed very limited applicability to more distantly related species.  相似文献

1. Hosts are often targeted by multiple species of parasites, leading to a confluence of selective pressures on them. In response, hosts may either evolve defences that act very generally, or specific defences against particular parasites. Aphids are attacked by multiple species of endoparasitoid wasps, and there is clear evidence that heritable endosymbionts can confer resistance against some of these wasps. Less clear is how symbiont‐conferred resistance in a single host acts against multiple parasitoid species. 2. This question was addressed in the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae (Scopoli). Unprotected aphids and aphids protected by three different strains of the defensive endosymbiont Hamiltonella defensa were exposed to four species of parasitic wasps: the parthenogenetic species Lysiphlebus fabarum (Marshall), which was represented by three different asexual lines, and the sexual species Aphidius colemani (Viereck), Binodoxys angelicae (Halliday), and Aphelinus chaonia (Walker). 3. Hamiltonella defensa provided strong protection against L. fabarum and Aphidius colemani, but there was no evidence that H. defensa‐infected aphids were more resistant to the other parasitoid species. While Aphidius colemani was virtually unable to parasitise any aphids harbouring H. defensa, there was variation among the three asexual lines of L. fabarum in how susceptible they were to the defence provided by the different symbiont strains, resulting in a significant genotype‐by‐genotype interaction. 4. The present results suggest that symbiosis with H. defensa does not provide aphids with a general defence against parasitoid wasps, possibly because some species have evolved specific counter adaptations or because biological differences preclude the symbiont's effectiveness against these species.  相似文献

Lethaia, Vol. 43, pp. 334–343. Biogeochemistry and molecular taphonomy of biopolymers of marine zoomorphs are poorly known. In order to obtain insights into this issue we report on the biogeomacromolecular composition of hand‐picked, well‐preserved scolecodonts of Ordovician, Silurian and Devonian age using micro‐Fourier transform infrared (micro‐FTIR) spectroscopy, Curie point pyrolysis‐gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (Cupy‐GC‐MS) and tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH)‐assisted thermochemolysis‐GC‐MS. The present study reveals that scolecodonts are composed of both aliphatic and aromatic moieties. The micro‐FTIR spectra of scolecodonts are characterized by aliphatic CHx (3000–2800 and 1460–1450/cm) and CH3 (1375/cm) absorptions and aromatic C=C (1560–1610/cm) and CH (3050/cm and 700–900/cm) absorptions. The major pyrolysis products from the scolecodonts include aromatic hydrocarbons such as alkylbenzenes, alkylnaphthalenes and alkylphenols. Aliphatic hydrocarbons are represented by a homologous series of n‐alkenes and n‐alkanes. The compounds released upon thermochemolysis with TMAH are saturated and unsaturated fatty acids (as their methyl esters), n‐alkenes/alkanes and aromatic acids (as their methyl esters). No protein/amino acid‐derived compounds have been recognized in the pyrolysates or in the thermochemolysates, and it is concluded that protein/amino acid‐related compounds, which are commonly found in the jaws of extant polychaetes, were destroyed due to diagenetic processes. The present study focuses on the genetic differentiation between six coexisting species of Taraxacum sect. Erythrosperma . Twenty-six individuals of T. rubicundum , T. brachyglossum , T. tortilobum , T. lacistophyllum , T. parnassicum and T. scanicum were sampled at 14 locations in south-east (Bavaria) and west Germany (Eifel). Using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis 139 fragments were amplified. Nineteen of these were found to be species specific. The level of polymorphic bands within the different Taraxacum species varied between 0% and 15.8%. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed strong differentiation between the investigated species: 14.3% of the molecular variance were found within the species, while 85.7% of the genetic variability was observed between the species. However, a geographical differentiation between the different regions could not be observed. All analysed species were clearly separated from each other in a cluster analysis using the neighbour joining technique. The observed strong genetic differentiation between the Taraxacum species clearly supports the agamospecies concept of Taraxacum sect. 1. Benthic algal communities are shaped by the availability of nutrients and light and by herbivore consumption. Many studies have examined how one of these factors affects algal communities, but studies simultaneously addressing all three are rare. 2. We investigated the effects of nutrients, light and a herbivore (the snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum) on benthic stream algae in a fully factorial experiment in 128 circular streamside channels. Four nutrient levels (none added to highly enriched), four snail grazing pressures (no snails to 777 individuals m?2) and two light levels (ambient and 65% reduced) were applied. Colonising algae were dominated by diatoms (Bacillariophyta), which were determined to species using acid‐cleaned samples and assigned to functional groups according to their physiognomic growth form. 3. Diatom community structure changed considerably in response to our manipulations. Light had the strongest influence (as indicated by manova effect size), whereas nutrients had an intermediate effect and grazing was fairly weak. Relative abundances of six common diatom taxa decreased under reduced light, whereas five others became more prevalent. Eight taxa benefitted from nutrient enrichment, while three became rarer. Grazing affected the relative density of only one common taxon, which increased at higher grazing pressure. 4. Diatom functional groups also responded strongly. ‘Low profile’ taxa dominated at low resource levels (nutrients and especially light), whereas ‘high profile’ and ‘motile’ taxa became markedly more prevalent at higher resource levels. 5. Two‐way interactions between experimental factors were quite common. For example, Planothidium lanceolatum and Rossithidium petersenii responded more strongly to nutrient enrichment at reduced than at ambient light, whereas Cocconeis placentula responded more strongly at ambient light. For diatom functional groups, the benefit of nutrient enrichment for ‘motile’ diatoms was greater at ambient than at reduced light. 6. Our results imply that multifactor experiments are required to determine the main forces driving the composition of benthic algal communities. Further, our findings highlight the considerable potential of using functional algal groups as indicators of changing environmental conditions to complement the traditional taxonomic approach.  相似文献
