Three main types of calcium oxalate crystal occur in monocotyledons:raphides, styloids and druses, although intermediates are sometimesrecorded. The presence or absence of the different crystal typesmay represent ‘useful’ taxonomic characters. Forinstance, styloids are characteristic of some families of Asparagales,notably Iridaceae, where raphides are entirely absent. The presenceof styloids is therefore a synapomorphy for some families (e.g.Iridaceae) or groups of families (e.g. Philydraceae, Pontederiaceaeand Haemodoraceae). This paper reviews and presents new dataon the occurrence of these crystal types, with respect to currentsystematic investigations on the monocotyledons. In coastal populations of Lapwings Vanellus vanellus in southwestern Sweden, arable fields predominated as foraging habitat before laying. Females caught more large prey items on arable fields and shores than on pastures. Close to egg laying, females foraged mainly near their future nest sites. Arable land and pastures were used to a similar extent for nesting. We found no difference in nest predation between habitats. Egg volume varied among females and was correlated with wing-length, body mass and condition. Mean egg volume also was positively correlated with feeding time on arable land before laying. Pairs nesting on arable fields therefore generally produced larger eggs than those on pastures. The distances between nests and chick foraging areas, however, were significantly longer for birds nesting on arable land than for those on pastures. Moreover, in 2 of 3 years, the proportion of hatched chicks that survived until fledging was negatively correlated with this distance. There was no difference in chick survival between broods hatched on arable fields and pastures. We suggest that nest site selection and offspring production involve a trade-off between the benefits of nesting close to rich feeding grounds for adults and the costs of moving long distances between nest sites and chick-rearing areas.  相似文献

1. Variation in thermal conditions and season length along latitudinal gradients affect body size‐related traits over different life stages. Selection is expected to optimise these size traits in response to the costs and benefits. 2. Egg, hatchling, larval and adult size in males and females were estimated along a latitudinal gradient of 2730 km across Europe in the univoltine damselfly Lestes sponsa, using a combination of field‐collection and laboratory‐rearing experiments. In the laboratory, individuals were grown in temperatures and photoperiod simulating those at the latitude of origin, and in common‐garden conditions. 3. The size of adults sampled in nature was negatively correlated with latitude. In all populations the females were larger than the males. Results from simulated and common‐garden rearing experiments supported this pattern of size difference across latitudes and between sexes, suggesting a genetic component for the latitudinal size trend and female‐biased size dimorphism. In contrast, hatchling size showed a positive relationship with latitude, but egg size, although differing between latitudes, showed no such relationship. 4. The results support a converse Bergmann cline, i.e. a negative body size cline towards the north. This negative cline in body size is probably driven by progressively stronger seasonal time and temperature constraints towards the higher latitudes and by the obligate univoltine life cycle of L. sponsa. As egg size showed no relationship with latitude, other environmental factors besides temperature, such as desiccation risk, probably affect this trait.  相似文献

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) has traditionally been considered as a monogenic autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the MEFV gene with highest incidence among Mediterranean populations. In a considerable number of patients with typical FMF, only one MEFV mutation was identified and the possibility that more than one autoinflammatory gene may be responsible for their disease was investigated. In the present study, an extensive search for possible mutations in three hereditary recurrent fever (HRF) genes was performed in 128 MEFV heterozygous Greek–Cypriots clinically diagnosed based on their phenotype with FMF-like disease from a previous study. Sequence analysis was performed for MVK, TNFRSF1A and NLRP3 genes which is also known to cause HRFs. In total, three patients were identified with heterozygous mutations and a second mutation in an autoinflammatory gene. Two patients carried a MEFV mutation and a NLRP3 mutation, and an additional third carried a MEFV mutation and a TNFRSF1A mutation. Patient 1 carried MEFV p.[Val726Ala] (NM_000243.2:c.2177T >C) and NLRP3 p.[Val198Met] (NM_001243133.1:c.592G >A) variants and patient 2 carried MEFV p.[Glu148Gln] (NM_000243.2:c.442G >C) variant which is of uncertain significance and NLRP3 p.[Arg176Trp] (NM_001243133.1:c.526C >T). Lastly, patient 3 was identified to carry MEFV p.[Met694Val] (NM_000243.2:c.2080A >G) and TNFRSF1A p.[Arg121Gln] (NM_001065.3:c.362G >A) variants. The results from this study indicate that screening of genes known to cause HRFs in patients already identified with a single MEFV mutation, can reveal quite rare but potentially causative mutational combinations at different loci. Such interaction provide further evidence for possible locus–locus interactions and phenotypes resulting from digenic inheritance.  相似文献

Single-point intensity scaling and time-intensity methods were used to record oral irritation from solutions of 2 ppm capsaicin, capsaicin with added sucrose (0.04M), NaCl (0.3M), citric acid (0.01M) or xanthan gum (0.2%). Only sucrose depressed mouth-burn, both in magnitude and duration. The viscosity imparted by xanthan retarded perception of mouth-burn but did not effect its duration. While single-point scaling averaged perceived intensity across time, time-intensity provided much more information by displaying perception from onset to decay. Eaters and non-eaters of chili peppers did not differ in their perception of mouth-burn.  相似文献

Weather conditions, and how they in turn define and characterize regional climatic conditions, are a primary limit on global species diversity and distribution, and increasing variability in global and regional climates have significant implications for species and habitat conservation. A Capture–Mark–Recapture study revealed that badger (Meles meles) life history parameters interact in complicated ways with annual variability in the seasonality of temperature and rainfall, both in absolute and in phenological terms. A strong predictive relationship was observed between survival and both temperature and late‐summer rainfall. This link at the population dynamics level was related to individual body‐weight increases observed between summer and autumn. In addition, fecundity was correlated with spring rainfall and temperature. We investigated and confirmed that relationships were consistent with observed variation in the intensity of a parasitic infection. Finally, fecundity during any given year correlated with conditions in the preceding autumn. Badger survival also correlated with late winter weather conditions. This period is critical for badgers insofar as it coincides with their peak involvement in road traffic accidents (RTAs). RTA rate during this period was linked strongly to temperature, underlining the intricate ways in which a changing climate might interact with anthropogenic agents to influence species' population processes. Equinoctial conditions produced significant population driver effects. That is, while summers will always be relatively warm compared with winters, spring and autumn weather can be more variable and functionally delimit the ‘productive’ vs. nonproductive period of the year in terms of badger behavioural and physiological cycles. This study highlights how appropriately informed conservation strategies, mindful of trends in climatic conditions, will become ever‐more essential to ensure the survival of many species globally.  相似文献

Submerged macrophytes as indicators of the ecological quality of lakes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. We analysed submerged macrophyte communities from 300 Danish lakes to determine the efficacy of different species, maximum colonisation depth (Cmax) of plants as well as coverage and plant volume inhabited (PVI) as indicators of eutrophication. 2. Most species occurred at a wide range of phosphorus and chlorophyll a (Chla) concentrations, but some species of isoetids (Lobelia, Isoëtes) and Potamogeton (Potamogeton gramineus, Potamogeton alpinus and Potamogeton filiformis) were mainly found at low nutrient concentrations and hence may be considered as indicators of nutrient poor conditions. However, species typically found in nutrient‐rich conditions, such as Elodea canadensis and Potamogeton pectinatus, were also found at total phosphorus (TP) <0.02 mg P L?1 and Chla <5 μg L?1 and therefore cannot be considered as reliable indicators of eutrophic conditions. 3. Submerged macrophyte coverage, PVI and the Cmax were negatively correlated with TP and Chla. However, variability among lakes was high and no clear thresholds were observed. At TP between 0.03 and 0.07 mg P L?1 plant coverage in shallow lakes ranged from nearly 0 to 100%, whilst at concentrations between 0.10 and 0.20 mg P L?1 only 29% of the lakes had coverage >10%. Cmax was found to be a useful indicator only in deep lakes with unvegetated areas in the deeper part, whereas the use of coverage was restricted to shallow lakes or shallow areas of deep lakes. 4. Overall, submerged macrophytes responded clearly to eutrophication, but the metrics investigated here showed no well‐defined thresholds. We developed a simple index based on species richness, presence of indicator species, coverage and Cmax, which might be used to track major changes in macrophyte communities and for lake classification.  相似文献
