Crinoid stems from the Silurian of Gotland and the Devonian of Morocco show a variety of the malformations which in the literature since 1884 have been almost invariably ascribed to myzostomid activity. No observations support this theory; except for possible cysts in the Moroccan material, the stems are massive with shallow pits in a superficial layer of calcium carbonate. Attached Foraminifera with agglutinated siliceous tests show a remarkable association with these pits. Cornulitids were responsible for other malformations. If the few cases of. previously described cysts on the stems were asSociated with myzostomids, the latter would have represented adaptations very different from those in Recent forms.  相似文献

The potential cellular pathway of radial transfer of photosynthateand potassium delivered in the phloem to the elongation zone(apical 0.5–2.5 cm) of internode 2 ofPhaseolus vulgarisL. seedlings was elucidated. This was achieved using ultrastructuralobservations of the cell types that constitute the radial pathwayand estimates of potential sucrose and potassium fluxes throughthe cross-sectional area of interconnecting plasmodesmata andacross the plasma membrane surface areas of selected cell types.The investigation relied on predicting the relative roles ofthe mature and developing sieve elements as conduits for theaxial delivery of solutes to the elongation zone. In turn, thesepredictions led to formulation of two transport models whichwere subsequently evaluated. It was found that unloading ofsucrose and potassium from the protophloem sieve elements cannotbe through the symplast due to the absence of plasmodesmata.On the other hand, mature metaphloem sieve element-companioncell complexes have the potential capacity to unload eitherthrough the stem symplast or apoplast. The potential symplasticroute is proposed to be via the companion cells to the adjacentlarge phloem parenchyma cells. Continued radial transfer couldoccur either by exchange to the stem apoplast from the largephloem parenchyma cells or continue in the symplast to the groundtissues. It was further predicted that sucrose utilized forthe development of the procambial/small phloem parenchyma cellscould be delivered axially by them and not by the mature sieveelements. Anthropogenic habitat change and assisted colonization are promoting range expansions of some widespread species with potential consequences for endemic fauna. The recent colonization of Cyprus by breeding Sardinian Warblers Sylvia melanocephala has raised concerns that it might be displacing the closely related and endemic Cyprus Warbler Sylvia melanothorax. Habitat associations of both species were examined using models of abundance within the 95% density kernel of the Sardinian Warbler’s range and also outside this range for Cyprus Warbler. Within the Sardinian Warbler’s range, the two species were associated with subtly different scrub habitats. Outside the Sardinian Warbler’s range, the Cyprus Warbler differed again in its habitat association, but this probably resulted from marked differences in habitat extent and availability in different parts of the island rather than from competitive displacement, as none of the habitat or land‐use elements differentially associated with Cyprus Warblers was positively associated with Sardinian Warbler occurrence. This suggests that the Sardinian Warbler has exploited a different niche, rather than displacing the endemic species, and has perhaps benefitted from changing land‐use patterns, particularly recent fallows and abandoned agriculture, in contrast to the stronger association of Cyprus Warblers with semi‐natural scrub.  相似文献

The Bipolaris sorokiniana tolerant 1 ( bst1 ) barley mutant is derived from fast neutron-irradiated seeds of wild-type Bowman( Rph3 ). The induced mutation was genetically localized to a position on chromosome 5HL distal to the centromere using amplified fragment length polymorphism markers. In addition, the defence responses and related gene expression in the bst1 mutant after fungal challenge were compared with those occurring in wild-type plants. Hydrogen peroxide generation, determined by 3,3-diaminobenzidine staining, revealed a clearly reduced level of bst1 , compared with the wild-type, during the entire experimental time: 8–120 h post-inoculation (hpi). At 48 hpi, the wild-type samples displayed twice as much fungal mass and three times greater H2O2 production than bst1 . At the same time, staining of B. sorokiniana showed less fungal growth in the spontaneous lesions of bst1 compared with the wild-type. Monitoring of defence-related genes at 48 hpi demonstrated strong expression of PR-1a , PR-2 , PR-5 and PR-10 in bst1. A gene coding for a unique oxidoreductase enzyme, designated as HCP1 , was expressed at much higher levels in inoculated leaves of the bst1 mutant than in those of the wild-type plant. Taken together, the results suggest that the defence to B. sorokiniana largely relies on salicylic acid-responsive pathogenesis-related ( PR ) genes, as well as selected reactive oxygen species and unknown HCP1 -associated factors.  相似文献

ABSTRACT We used nucleotide sequence data from a mitochondrial DNA fragment to characterize variation within the endangered Lower Keys marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris hefneri). We observed 5 unique mitochondrial haplotypes across different sampling sites in the Lower Florida Keys, USA. Based on the frequency of these haplotypes at different geographic locations and relationships among haplotypes, we observed 2 distinct clades or groups of sampling sites (western and eastern clades). These 2 groups showed low levels of gene flow. Regardless of their origin, marsh rabbits from the Lower Florida Keys can be separated into 2 genetically distinct management units, which should be considered prior to implementation of translocations as a means of offsetting recent population declines.  相似文献

The area under the cultivation of perennial bioenergy crops on organic soils in the northern countries is fast increasing. To understand the impact of reed canary grass (RCG, Phalaris arundinaceae L.) cultivation on the carbon dioxide (CO2) balance of an organic soil, net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) was measured for four years in a RCG cultivated cutover peatland in eastern Finland using the eddy covariance technique. There were striking differences among the years in the annual precipitation. The annual precipitation was higher during 2004 and 2007 and lower during 2005 and 2006 than the 1971–2000 regional mean. During wet growing seasons, moderate temperatures, high surface soil moisture and low evaporative demand favoured high CO2 uptake. During dry seasons, owing to soil moisture and atmospheric stress, photosynthetic activity was severely restricted. The CO2 uptake [gross primary productivity (GPP)] was positively correlated with soil moisture, air temperature and inversely with vapour pressure deficit. Total ecosystem respiration (TER) increased with increasing soil temperature but decreased with increasing soil moisture. The relative responses of GPP and TER to moisture stress were different. While changes in TER for a given change in soil moisture were moderate, variations in GPP were drastic. Also, the seasonal variations in TER were not as conspicuous as those in GPP implying that GPP is the primary regulator of the interannual variability in NEE in this ecosystem. The ecosystem accumulated a total of 398 g C m?2 from the beginning of 2004 until the end of 2007. It retained some carbon during a wet year such as 2004 even after accounting for the loss of carbon in the form of harvested biomass. Based on this CO2 balance analysis, RCG cultivation is found to be a promising after‐use option on an organic soil.  相似文献

The details of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) phylogenetic structure of the northern grasshopper mouse Onychomys leucogaster were examined using populations from a postulated area of endemism that includes three arid regions (Colorado Plateaus, Interior Plains, and Wyoming Basins) in western North America. Fifteen tetra- and heptanucleotide restriction enzymes were used to assay restriction-site variation in a 2150-bp PCR-amplified fragment of mtDNA representing the ND2 and part of the COI gene regions. A total of 18 mtDNA haplotypes were detected. Although overall genetic divergence among these haplotypes was low (average = 1.1%), phylogeographic structuring was apparent. Notably, a clear phylogenetic split separated one group of haplotypes restricted to the Wyoming Basins from all others. This phylogenetic split was further corroborated by examination of nucleotide sequence variation from a 270-bp stretch of the mtDNA cytochrome b gene. Overall geographic and phylogenetic patterns suggest a complex history of geographic structuring and subsequent mixing of populations of grasshopper mice throughout the late Pleistocene. These patterns of variation are evaluated relative to alternative hypotheses about biotic responses to Quaternary climatic oscillations in western North American arid regions.  相似文献

The disease, now usually called line-pattern of plum, has been described under many names in most countries where plums are grown extensively.
Naturally infected trees show widely differing Symptoms; this has two causes: (1) different varieties react differently to the same isolate of the virus, and (2) different isolates cause different symptoms in the same variety. Because the virus occurs in strains with different pathogenicities, the choice of indicator varieties is important when selecting virus-free material by transmission tests. Peach seedlings and the mazzard clone, F 12/1, were the most sensitive types found.
The line-pattern virus does not become fully systemic in some varieties of plum. In this and other respects, it resembles the viruses that cause apple mosaic; three isolates obtained from plum and two from apple produced similar Symptoms in peach and apple. It is therefore suggested that plum line-pattern and apple mosaic viruses are caused by strains of one virus.  相似文献

Abstract Factors affecting the flight potential of Choristoneura conflictana, an insect that undergoes cyclical changes in population density, are investigated using computer‐linked flight mills. Female and male moths are flown for a 12‐h period and the longest single flight and total flight distance of each moth is recorded. After flight bioassays, moths are subjected to lipid extraction with a soxhlet apparatus to determine the effect of body lipid content on flight. Larger C. conflictana moths fly farther than smaller moths. Female C. conflictana fly farther than male moths but the effects of both mating status and moth age on the distance flown are dependent on sex. Mated females fly farther than virgins and older females fly farther than young females but these relationships do not occur in males. Body lipid content affects the distance flown by both females and males through a significant interaction with sex and age. The factors examined in this study will vary with density in natural populations and are predicted to be important indicators of flight potential and dispersal in this species.  相似文献
