While sex allocation has been investigated productively at both population and family levels, as yet no general theory has been developed that is capable of linking processes at these two ecological scales, and very few empirical studies have examined cross‐scale patterns. In Finnish northern goshawks (Accipiter gentilis), nestling sex ratio of local subpopulations is related to the spatial and temporal variation in the abundance of their principal avian prey, woodland grouse. Using data from an urban breeding population in Hamburg, Germany, I investigated: (1) whether brood sex ratio of goshawks varies with diet composition at the family level; (2) whether such variation could reflect adaptive adjustment; and (3) how family‐level allocation can drive population‐level patterns, such as those observed in Finland. Feral pigeons (Columba livia) were the most important prey species, with a pooled contribution to total diet of 36%. Brood sex ratio varied significantly with the proportion of pigeons in the breeding‐season diet of pairs (increasing male bias). However, there was no evidence for sex‐differential effects of diet composition, so it remains unclear whether the observed sex‐ratio variation was an adaptive response. As all study pairs inhabited an (urban) environment where pigeons were unusually abundant, family‐level sex‐ratio adjustment caused a marked male bias in offspring sex ratio at the population level (male‐biased nestling sex ratio in four of five years; pooled data: 60% males). This suggests that the large‐scale variation observed in Finnish goshawk populations mirrors sex‐ratio adjustment shown by individual families in response to small‐scale environmental conditions. Apart from linking patterns empirically across ecological scales, this study is, to my knowledge, the first to demonstrate that family‐level brood sex ratio varies with realized resource use (diet composition) in a raptor species. Previous studies either failed to find significant associations or, more commonly, violated theoretical assumptions by measuring environmental prey abundance (often integrated over large areas) rather than realized prey use of individual breeding pairs. I conducted a meta‐analysis of offspring sex‐ratio data from 17 goshawk populations across Europe to put my results into perspective. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 937–951.  相似文献

1. Smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) have been widely introduced to fresh waters throughout the world to promote recreational fishing opportunities. In the Pacific Northwest (U.S.A.), upstream range expansions of predatory bass, especially into subyearling salmon‐rearing grounds, are of increasing conservation concern, yet have received little scientific inquiry. Understanding the habitat characteristics that influence bass distribution and the timing and extent of bass and salmon overlap will facilitate the development of management strategies that mitigate potential ecological impacts of bass. 2. We employed a spatially continuous sampling design to determine the extent of bass and subyearling Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) sympatry in the North Fork John Day River (NFJDR), a free‐flowing river system in the Columbia River Basin that contains an upstream expanding population of non‐native bass. Extensive (i.e. 53 km) surveys were conducted over 2 years and during an early and late summer period of each year, because these seasons provide a strong contrast in the river’s water temperature and flow condition. Classification and regression trees were applied to determine the primary habitat correlates of bass abundance at reach and channel‐unit scales. 3. Our study revealed that bass seasonally occupy up to 22% of the length of the mainstem NFJDR where subyearling Chinook salmon occur, and the primary period of sympatry between these species was in the early summer and not during peak water temperatures in late summer. Where these species co‐occurred, bass occupied 60–76% of channel units used by subyearling Chinook salmon in the early summer and 28–46% of the channel units they occupied in the late summer. Because these rearing salmon were well below the gape limitation of bass, this overlap could result in either direct predation or sublethal effects of bass on subyearling Chinook salmon. The upstream extent of bass increased 10–23 km (2009 and 2010, respectively) as stream temperatures seasonally warmed, but subyearling Chinook salmon were also found farther upstream during this time. 4. Our multiscale analysis suggests that bass were selecting habitat based on antecedent thermal history at a broad scale, and if satisfactory temperature conditions were met, mesoscale habitat features (i.e. channel‐unit type and depth) played an additional role in determining bass abundance. The upstream extent of bass in the late summer corresponded to a high‐gradient geomorphic discontinuity in the NFJDR, which probably hindered further upstream movements of bass. The habitat determinants and upstream extent of bass were largely consistent across years, despite marked differences in the magnitude and timing of spring peak flows prior to bass spawning. 5. The overriding influence of water temperature on smallmouth bass distribution suggests that managers may be able limit future upstream range expansions of bass into salmon‐rearing habitat by concentrating on restoration activities that mitigate climate‐ or land‐use‐related stream warming. These management activities could be prioritised to capitalise on survival bottlenecks in the life history of bass and spatially focused on landscape knick points such as high‐gradient discontinuities to discourage further upstream movements of bass.  相似文献

Genetic variation was investigated using AFLP markers in 12 populations of Anthurium sinuatum and A. pentaphyllum var. pentaphyllum (Araceae) in north‐east Brazil, Amazonia and the Brazilian Atlantic forest. Two unique genetic patterns characterized the populations of A. sinuatum as a group, but no correlation between genetic and geographical interpopulation distance was found; the Amazonian population was not separated from that in Ceará. The isolated Ceará brejo populations of A. sinuatum were genetically distinct, but genetic diversity levels were similar to populations elsewhere, with no evidence of genetic erosion. Anthurium pentaphyllum populations were significantly different from each other; Bayesian genetic structural analysis found no common genetic pattern, but revealed genetic clusters unique to subgroups and individual populations in the Atlantic forest and French Guiana. Anthurium pentaphyllum and A. sinuatum can be distinguished genetically, but individuals of both species formed intermediate genetic clusters that blurred their distinction. We suggest that genetic mixing of A. sinuatum and A. pentaphyllum has occurred in north‐east Brazil, possibly connected with cycles of humid forest expansion. The weak genetic structure in A. sinuatum is consistent with the natural fragmentation of continuous forest areas, possibly during the Holocene. This study highlights the scientific importance of the highly threatened brejo forests for tropical American biogeography. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 159 , 88–105.  相似文献

Rapidly evolving genes (e.g. candidate selected loci) are of increasing interest to molecular ecologists and conservation geneticists. Here, we report primers for five regions from three independent nuclear reproductive genes that reliably generate polymorphic sequences across the widespread wild goats of the Capra ibex species group and likely many other species of bovids. From three to nine single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified in each gene region among C. ibex subspecies. Average numbers of SNPs per 1000 bp across all five gene regions was 15.0, with a high of 25.3 in the ZP3 exons 3 and 4 sequence and a low of 6.1 in the TNP1 sequence.  相似文献

Pelophylax esculentus is a hybridogenetic frog originating from matings between P. ridibundus (RR) and P. lessonae (LL). Typically, diploid hybrids (LR) live in sympatry with one of their parental species, upon which they depend for successful reproduction. In parts of their range, however, pure hybrid populations can be found. These hybrid populations have achieved reproductive independence from their parental species by using triploid hybrids (LLR, LRR) rather than LL and RR as their sexual hosts. These different breeding systems also entail differences in reproduction (clonal versus sexual) and hence offer the opportunity to study how genetic diversity is affected by reproductive mode, population structure and geographic location. We investigated 33 populations in the Scania region (South Sweden) and 18 additional populations from Northern and Central Europe. Within both genomes (L, R), genetic variability increases with the potential for recombination and declines from the main species distribution area southeast of the Baltic Sea to the fringe populations northwest of the Baltic Sea. Within the main study area in Scania, genetic diversity is low and decreases from a core area to the periphery. Genetic differentiation between Scania populations is small but significant and best explained by ‘isolation by distance’. Despite the low genetic variability within the discrete genomes, all‐hybrid P. esculentus populations in southern Sweden are apparently not suffering from direct negative fitness effects. This is probably because of its somatic hybrid status, which increases diversity through the combination of genomes from two species.  相似文献

Adaptation to new environments can start from new mutations or from standing variation already present in natural populations. Whether admixture constrains or facilitates adaptation from standing variation is largely unknown, especially in ecological keystone or foundation species. We examined patterns of neutral and adaptive population divergence in Populus tremula L., a widespread forest tree, using mapped molecular genetic markers. We detected the genetic signature of postglacial admixture between a Western and an Eastern lineage of P. tremula in Scandinavia, an area suspected to represent a zone of postglacial contact for many species of animals and plants. Stringent divergence‐based neutrality tests provided clear indications for locally varying selection at the European scale. Six of 12 polymorphisms under selection were located less than 1 kb away from the nearest gene predicted by the Populus trichocarpa genome sequence. Few of these loci exhibited a signature of ‘selective sweeps’ in diversity‐based tests, which is to be expected if adaptation occurs primarily from standing variation. In Scandinavia, admixture explained genomic patterns of ancestry and the nature of clinal variation and strength of selection for bud set, a phenological trait of great adaptive significance in temperate trees, measured in a common garden trial. Our data provide a hitherto missing direct link between past range shifts because of climatic oscillations, and levels of standing variation currently available for selection and adaptation in a terrestrial foundation species.  相似文献

Abstract:  The brachiopod Sulcipentamerus , previously considered a common endemic pentameride genus in the Lower Silurian (Aeronian) of South China, is reported from largely coeval strata in the Hauge Bjerge, Ymers Gletcher and Odins Fjord formations (Washington Land Group) of North Greenland. Two species are present. In eastern North Greenland, S . cf. dorsoplanus occurs in carbonate strata of Aeronian – early Telychian age, whereas in the western region, a new species, S . lunatus sp. nov., is described. The identification of both forms as Sulcipentamerus is indicated by their relatively long ventral median septum and dorsal inner hinge plates. The new species, Sulcipentamerus lunatus sp. nov., is characterized by a nonlobate shell, a narrow but sharply defined interarea bordering the delthyrium and a deeply concave pseudodeltidium. Despite the two known occurrences of the genus in South China and Greenland, the Sulcipentamerus -bearing Harpidium Fauna of North Greenland (northeastern part of Laurentia) was quite distinct from both the Aeronian–Telychian brachiopod faunas of South China and the southern half of Laurentia. In general, the Aeronian pentameride brachiopod faunas of these three regions are strongly endemic, in contrast to their more tightly clustered counterparts from Avalonia, Baltica, Siberia, Kazakhstan, Tadzhikistan, Kolyma and Novaya Zemlya.  相似文献

The Arabidopsis vacuolar H+‐pyrophosphatase (AVP1), when over‐expressed in transgenic (TG) plants, regulates root and shoot development via facilitation of auxin flux, and enhances plant resistance to salt and drought stresses. Here, we report that TG perennial creeping bentgrass plants over‐expressing AVP1 exhibited improved resistance to salinity than wild‐type (WT) controls. Compared to WT plants, TGs grew well in the presence of 100 mm NaCl, and exhibited higher tolerance and faster recovery from damages from exposure to 200 and 300 mm NaCl. The improved performance of the TG plants was associated with higher relative water content (RWC), higher Na+ uptake and lower solute leakage in leaf tissues, and with higher concentrations of Na+, K+, Cl and total phosphorus in root tissues. Under salt stress, proline content was increased in both WT and TG plants, but more significantly in TGs. Moreover, TG plants exhibited greater biomass production than WT controls under both normal and elevated salinity conditions. When subjected to salt stress, fresh (FW) and dry weights (DW) of both leaves and roots decreased more significantly in WT than in TG plants. Our results demonstrated the great potential of genetic manipulation of vacuolar H+‐pyrophosphatase expression in TG perennial species for improvement of plant abiotic stress resistance.  相似文献
