1. Running waters, including associated riparian areas, are embraced by international legal frameworks outlining targets for the preservation, protection and improvement of the quality of the environment. Interactions between stream and river processes and riparian habitats have not received much attention in the management of stream ecosystems, and integrated measures that consider both the ecological status of streams and rivers (sensu EU Water Framework Directive, WFD) and the conservation status of riparian habitats and species (sensu EU Habitats Directive, HD) are rare. 2. Here, we analysed the influence of stream size, morphology and chemical water characteristics for the distribution of water‐dependent terrestrial habitat types, i.e. alkaline fens, periodically inundated meadows and meadows in riparian areas in Denmark using an extensive data set covering a total of 254 stream reaches. A species‐based classification model was used to translate species lists into a standardised interpretation of habitat types protected by the HD in Denmark. 3. No size dependency was found regarding the distribution of fen and meadow vegetation. Instead, the distribution of fen and meadow vegetation was strongly affected by the morphology of the streams. Alkaline fens, periodically inundated meadows and meadows occurred six, five and four times, respectively, less frequently along channelised compared with natural stream reaches. Our results indicate that stream channelisation strongly interfered with the natural hydrology of riparian areas, affecting conditions needed to sustain protected fen and meadow communities. 4. We also found that water chemistry strongly influenced the occurrence of fen and meadow vegetation in riparian areas. The probability of finding fen and meadow vegetation was reduced when total phosphorus (TP) concentration exceeded 40–50 μg P L?1, whereas meadow vegetation responded less strongly to TP. 5. Our findings highlight the importance of restoring hydrology of riparian areas to improve conditions for fen and meadow vegetation, but also that the water chemistry should be considered when measures that increase hydrological connectivity result in an increase in the probability of flooding.  相似文献

In this paper we report on recently collected specimens of glass sponges belonging to Farreidae Gray, 1872, and Tretodictyidae Schulze, 1886 (Porifera: Hexactinellida: Hexactinosida). All specimens represent new geographical records for their genera: Coral Sea for Aspidoscopulia Reiswig, 2002 (Farreidae) and Psilocalyx Ijima, 1927 (Tretodictyidae); north‐west Atlantic for Sarostegia Topsent, 1904 (Farreidae). Two new species, Aspidoscopulia australia Dohrmann, Göcke & Janussen sp. nov. and Aspidoscopulia ospreya Dohrmann, Göcke & Janussen sp. nov. , are described. To investigate further the evolution of hexactinosidan sponges, we sequenced two nuclear (18S and 28S rDNA) and two mitochondrial [16S ribosomal rDNA, cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI)] genes from these specimens, as well as from a recently described new species of Lonchiphora Ijima, 1927 (Farreidae). Besides corroborating the monophyly of Tretodictyidae, our molecular phylogenetic analyses support a clade of clavule‐bearing sponges with a farreoid dictyonal framework (i.e. Farreidae sensu stricto). In contrast, Sarostegia, which lacks these features, appears unrelated to this clade – instead our data are consistent with an earlier placement of this genus in Euretidae Zittel, 1877. We introduce formally the taxon Sceptrulophora Mehl 1992, and emend the classification of Hexactinosida to reflect this move and our new findings regarding the position of Sarostegia. 1. Catchments export nutrients to aquatic ecosystems at rates and ratios that are strongly influenced by land use practices, and within aquatic ecosystems nutrients can be processed, retained, lost to the atmosphere, or exported downstream. The stoichiometry of carbon and nutrients can influence ecosystem services such as water quality, nutrient limitation, biodiversity, eutrophication and the sequestration of nutrients and carbon in sediments. However, we know little about how nutrient stoichiometry varies along the pathway from terrestrial landscapes through aquatic systems. 2. We studied the stoichiometry of nitrogen and phosphorus exported by three catchments of contrasting land use (forest versus agriculture) and in the water column and sediments of downstream reservoirs. We also related stoichiometry to phytoplankton nutrient limitation and the abundance of heterocystous cyanobacteria. 3. The total N : P of stream exports varied greatly among catchments and was 18, 54 and 140 (molar) in the forested, mixed‐use and agricultural catchment, respectively. Total N : P in the mixed layers of the lakes was less variable but ordered similarly: 35, 52 132 in the forested, mixed‐use and agricultural lake, respectively. In contrast, there was little variation among systems in the C : N and C : P ratios of catchment exports or in reservoir seston. 4. Phytoplankton in the forested lake were consistently N limited, those in the agricultural lake were consistently P limited, and those in the mixed‐use lake shifted seasonally from P‐ to N limitation, reflecting N : P supply ratios. Total phytoplankton and cyanobacteria biomass were highest in the agricultural lake, but heterocystous (potentially N fixing) cyanobacteria were most abundant in the forested lake, corresponding to low N : P ratios. 5. Despite large differences in catchment export and water column N : P ratios, the N : P of sediment burial (integrated over several decades) was very low and remarkably similar (4.3–7.3) across reservoirs. N and P budgets constructed for the agricultural reservoir suggested that denitrification could be a major loss of N, and may help explain the relatively low N : P of buried sediment. 6. Our results show congruence between the catchment export N : P, reservoir N : P, phytoplankton N versus P limitation and the dominance of heterocystous cyanobacteria. However, the N : P stoichiometry of sediments retained in the lakes was relatively insensitive to catchment stoichiometry, suggesting that a common set of biogeochemical processes constrains sediment N : P across lakes of contrasting catchment land use.  相似文献

Light and electron microscopical observations on the stomatogenesis of Coleps amphacanthus Ehrenberg, 1833, show that this "gymno"-stome ciliate has a well developed oral ciliature made of 19–23 "paroral dikinetids" and three "adoral organelles." These structures were previously known as "circumoral ciliature" and "dorsal brosse," and it was thought that they originated from the distal ends of all the 22–26 somatic kineties. Contrary to this view, only four stomatogenic kineties (K1, Kn, Kn-1, and Kn-2) are involved in stomatogenesis of the opisthe. All paroral dikinetids arise from one single kinetofragment (KF1) to the right of the oral anlage while the adoral organelles originate from the three left kinetofragments (KFn, KFn-1, and KFn-2). In particular, the future paroral dikinetids perform a complex morphogenetic movement that leads to a situation where the postciliary microtubules of the once posterior kinetosome of each oral dikinetid give rise to the cytopharyngeal microtubular ribbons. The postciliary origin of the cytopharyngeal ribbons which could only be detected by an EM study of stomatogenesis shows that the basket of Coleps belongs to the cyrtos-type and not to the rhabdos-type basket, where transverse microtubules accompany the basket-forming nematodesmata. The taxonomic implications of these observations, which may lead to a revision of the systematic position of the genus Coleps , are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.  1.  Maculinea alcon , a myrmecophilic, stenotopic lycaenid butterfly is restricted to wet heathlands, bogs, and nutrient-poor hay meadows. Due to intensification of agriculture and decrease of extensively grazed meadows, many suitable habitats have disappeared and the remaining ones are highly fragmented and deteriorated.
2. Historical distribution data and a comparison with the present occupation of patches show the decline of this critically endangered butterfly in north-west Germany. Most of the populations in north-west Germany are small and often geographically isolated.
3. In summer 2002, two-thirds of 77 investigated potential patches were unoccupied as a result of unsuitable habitat structure and habitat fragmentation.
4. Several habitat parameters were highly significantly correlated with the presence of M. alcon , in particular the distribution pattern of the host plant Gentiana pneumonanthe. Furthermore, butterflies were absent from many patches with an incidence probability below 50% with respect to patch size and isolation.
5. In the nature reserve Lüneburger Heide, part of the study area, M. alcon populations have been observed since 1995. Typical turnover of local populations could be detected during these years. Extinctions and re-colonisations have stabilised the presence of this species in a metapopulation in this nature reserve.
6. These data show the importance of different factors on different spatial levels influencing the presence of this endangered butterfly.  相似文献

Northern latitude and upper altitude climatic treelines have received increasing attention given their potential sensitivity to atmospheric and climate change. While greater radial stem growth at treeline sites in recent decades has been attributed largely to increasing temperature, rising atmospheric CO2 concentration may also be contributing to this growth stimulation. Tree ring increments of mature Larix decidua and Pinus uncinata were measured over 4 years in a free air CO2 enrichment experiment at treeline in the Swiss Central Alps (2180 m a.s.l.). In addition, a one‐time defoliation treatment in the second year (2002) of the experiment was used to simulate one of the common natural insect outbreak events. In response to elevated atmospheric CO2, Larix showed a cumulative 4‐year growth response of+41%, with particularly strong responses in the third and fourth year. This increase in radial stem wood growth was the result of more latewood production, in particular, the formation of larger tracheids, rather than a greater number of cells. In contrast, Pinus showed no change in ring width to elevated [CO2], neither in each of the treatment years, nor in the cumulative response over 4 years, although an increase in tracheid size was observed in the third year. Defoliation led to a pronounced decrease in annual ring width of both species, marked in particular by less latewood production, in the treatment, as well as subsequent years. There was no significant interaction between defoliation and CO2 enrichment. Although Pinus showed no growth response to CO2, the positive growth response observed in Larix after 4 years of CO2 enrichment implies that the sensitivity of treeline trees to global change may not be purely temperature driven. We conclude that the open sparse canopy in the treeline ecotone favours the indeterminate growth strategy of the early successional Larix when neither weather nor carbon are limiting, whereas the later successional Pinus does not show any indication of more vigorous growth under future higher atmospheric CO2 concentrations.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is the most commonly used measure of developmental instability. The relation between FA and individual fitness remains controversial, partly due to limited knowledge on the mechanisms behind variation in FA. To address this, we investigated the associations between FA, growth and reproduction as well as the ontogeny of FA in a clonal population of Daphnia magna . FA was not correlated with growth and reproduction, either at the between- or the within-individual level, in a high ( N  = 48 individuals) or in a low ( N  = 52 individuals) food-quantity regime. There were therefore no indications of functional effects of FA or of phenotypic trade-offs between developmental stability, growth and reproduction. Individual asymmetries varied randomly in sign and magnitude between subsequent molts ( N  = 19 individuals, 9–11 instars), but the levels of FA were generally lowest at intermediate ages. No feedback between right and left sides was detected. This suggests that FA only reflects the most recent growth history, that developmental instability may increase in old age, and that FA depends on processes operating on each side of the body independently. The Pliocene Beds of the Pisco Formation on the southern coast of Peru have yielded three new skulls of the walrus-like odontocete, Odobenocetops (Delphinoidea, Cetacea). Two of the skulls are from a slightly younger horizon than the holotype of O. peruvianus and belong to a different species, O. leptodon . The holotype of O. leptodon bears a 135 cm long needle-like right tusk and a small 25 cm long left tusk, the apex of which was erupted. The third skull, referred to a female of O. peruvianus , bears two small tusks similar in size to the small left tusk of the holotype. The new specimens include periotic, tympanic and ear ossicles, which confirm referral to the Order Cetacea and the morphology of the humerus reinforces affinities of odobenocetopsids to monodontids. Because the anterodorsal edge of its orbit is slightly concave O. leptodon had reduced anterodorsal binocular vision, a condition compensated for by the probable presence of a small melon (and inferred echolocation). The head was bent ventrally when swimming in such a way that the long tusk was approximately parallel to the axis of the body. African green monkeys (Chlorocebus) represent a widely distributed and morphologically diverse primate genus in sub‐Saharan Africa. Little attention has been paid to their genetic diversity and phylogeny. Based on morphological data, six species are currently recognized, but their taxonomy remains disputed. Here, we aim to characterize the mitochondrial (mt) DNA diversity, biogeography and phylogeny of African green monkeys. We analyzed the complete mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of 126 samples using feces from wild individuals and material from zoo and museum specimens with clear geographical provenance, including several type specimens. We found evidence for nine major mtDNA clades that reflect geographic distributions rather than taxa, implying that the mtDNA diversity of African green monkeys does not conform to existing taxonomic classifications. Phylogenetic relationships among clades could not be resolved suggesting a rapid early divergence of lineages. Several discordances between mtDNA and phenotype indicate that hybridization may have occurred in contact zones among species, including the threatened Bale monkey (Chlorocebus djamdjamensis). Our results provide both valuable data on African green monkeys’ genetic diversity and evolution and a basis for further molecular studies on this genus. Am. J.
