The impact of experimentally intensified summer drought and precipitation on N2O and NO turnover and fluxes was investigated in a minerotrophic fen over a 2‐year period. On three treatment plots, drought was induced for 6 and 10 weeks by means of roofs and drainage and decreased water table levels by 0.1–0.3 m compared with three nonmanipulated control plots. When averaged over the three treatment plots, both N2O and NO emission showed only little response to the drought. On the single plot scale, however, a clear impact of the treatment on N2O and NO fluxes could be identified. On the plot with the weakest water table reduction hardly any response could be observed, while on the plot with the greatest drainage effect, N2O and NO fluxes increased by 530% and 270%, respectively. Rewetting reduced NO emissions to background levels (0.05–0.15 μmol m?2 h?1), but heavily enhanced N2O emission (18–36 μmol m?2 h?1) for several days in the plots with largest water table reduction. These peaks contributed up to 40% to the cumulative N2O fluxes and were caused by rapid N2O production according to isotope abundance data. According to N2O concentrations and isotope abundance analysis N2O was mostly produced at depths between 0.3 and 0.5 m. During water table reduction net N2O production in 0.1 m depth steadily increased in the most effectively dried plot from 2 up to 44 pmol cm?3 day?1. Rewetting immediately increased net N2O production in the topsoil of the drought plots, showing rates of 18–174 pmol cm?3 day?1. This study demonstrates that drought and rewetting can temporarily increase N2O emission to levels that have to date only been reported from nutrient rich and degraded fens that have been drained for agricultural purposes.  相似文献

Surface soils, which contain the largest pool of terrestrial organic carbon (C), may be able to sequester atmospheric C and thus mitigate climate change. However, this remains controversial, largely due to insufficient data and knowledge gaps in respect of organic C contents and stocks in soils and the main factors of their control. Up to now and despite numerous evaluations of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks worldwide, the sloping lands of southeast Asia, one of the most biogeochemically active regions of the world, remain uninvestigated. Our main objective was to quantify SOC stocks and to evaluate the impact of various environmental factors. We, therefore, selected Laos with 230 566 km2 of mostly forested steep slopes, and where cultivation is still mainly traditional, i.e. a system of shifting cultivation without fertilization or mechanical tillage. Analytical data from 3471 soil profiles demonstrated that the top 1 m of soil depth holds an estimated 4.64 billion tons of SOC, 65% of which is in the first 0.3 m. SOC stocks to 0.3 m exhibit a high coefficient of variation (CV=62%) with values from 1.8 to 771 Mg C ha?1 and a mean at 129 Mg C ha?1. Furthermore, these stocks are significantly (at P<0.05 level) affected by land use as shown by principal components analysis and t‐tests with the largest amount being found under forest, less under shifting cultivation and the smallest under continuous cultivation. Moreover, SOC stocks correlated regionally to total annual rainfalls and latitude, and locally at the hill‐slope level to the distance to the stream network and the slope angle. It is hypothesized that this correlation is through actions on mineral weathering, soil clay content, soil fertility and SOC redistributions in landscapes. These relationships between SOC stocks and environmental factors may be of further use in (1) predicting the impact of global changes on future SOC stocks; and (2) identifying optimal strategies for land use planning so as to minimize soil C emissions to the atmosphere while maximizing carbon sequestration in soils.  相似文献

Abstract 1. In many Coleoptera, iridescent colouration is generated by exoskeleton ultra‐structure, within which multilayer interference reflects only certain wavelengths. Published work indicates that the colour polymorphism shown by some iridescent beetles is under genetic control. However, the present study suggests environmental involvement in the polymorphic southern African dung beetle, Gymnopleurus humanus Macleay. 2. At 24 study sites across a 1000‐km latitudinal temperature gradient, population samples of G. humanus were dominated by blue individuals in the cooler south, by cupreous individuals in the warmer north, and by locally co‐occurring blue, green and cupreous individuals in intermediate situations. 3. Using digital reflectance spectrophotometry, we measured wavelength intensity values across the visible spectrum (400–800 nm) and used the 70 measured specimens to estimate maximum reflectance from a further 3912 beetles. Differences in mean reflectance values between 24 populations were strongly correlated with average annual temperatures at study sites. 4. Much stronger correlations between mean reflectance values and average temperatures of the cool dry season months suggest that the cross‐climatic patterns may be related to interaction between breeding seasonality and development under different cooler temperatures. 5. Published evidence suggests that inherent physical properties of cholesteric liquid crystals and their responses to different thermal conditions could, potentially, generate the different exocuticle ultra‐structure responsible for different reflected colour wavelengths. Furthermore, colour polymorphism could be advantageous across a gradient from cooler to warmer climate as a result of the different thermal properties of different colours. 6. Given the correlation with temperature, it is predicted that the prevailing reflected colour balance in southern populations would shift in response to global climatic change.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. All stages (except conjugation) of the life cycle in Acineta tuberosa (Suctoria) were studied in the electron microscope. Budding starts with the invagination of a small pellicular area near the opening of the vacuole and bearing rows of barren basal bodies. Some of these basal bodies are incorporated into the swarmer-anlage and give rise to 8 rows of cilia, while the other basal bodies remain barren on the mother cell's side of the brood pouch. They will provide their own genetic continuity and later give rise to the swarmer of the next generation. Kineties are not spaced on the growing swarmer-anlage until their cilia are fully grown. Further details on the stalk-forming crganelle and general features of the development of the larvae are given.
Metamorphosis starts with the formation of basal disc and stalk. The stalk-forming material is released thru scopular pores into a tube-like mold formed by the scopula after having been pulled inward. Later, scopula pores spread from the scopular area proper and move upward. On their way to the apical part of the animal the cuticle is secreted. The differentiation of tentacles is described and new observations regarding a possible mode of haptocyst formation are given.
The results are discussed with respect to the morphogenetic potentialities of cortical structures in general.  相似文献

Variable factors affecting the enzymatic isolation of mesophyll protoplasts from Triticum aestivum (wheat), a C3 gras, and mesophyll protoplasts and bundle sheath strands from Digitaria sanguinalis (crabgrass), a C4 grass, have been examined with respect to yields and also photosynthetic capacity after isolation. Preparations with high yields and high photosynthetic capacity were obtained when small transverse leaf segments were incubated in enzyme medium in the light at 30°C, without mechanical shaking and without prior vacuum infiltration. Best results were obtained with an enzyme medium that included 0.5 M sorbitol, 1 mM MgCl2, 1 mM KH2PO4, 2% cellulase and 0.1% pectinase at pH 5.5. In gerneral, leaf age and leaf segment size were important factors, with highest yields and photosynthetic capacities obtained from young leaves cut into segments less than 0.8 mm. To facilitate the cutting of such small segments, a mechanical leaf cutter is described that uniformly (± 0.05 mm) cuts leaf tissue into transverse segments of variable size (0.4–2 mm). Isolations that required more than roughly 4 h gave poor yields with reduced photosynthetic capacity; however, using the optimum conditions described, functional preparations could be roughly 2 h. High rates of light dependent CO2 fixation by the C4 mesophyll protoplasts required the addition of pyruvate and low levels of oxalacetate, while isolated bundle sheath strands and C3 mesophyll protoplasts supported CO2 fixation without added substrates. Rates of CO2 fixation by isolated wheat protoplasts generally exceeded the reported rates of whole leaf photosynthesis. Wheat mesophyll protoplasts and crabgrass bundle sheath strands were stable when stored at 4°C while C4 mesophyll protoplasts were stable when stored at 25°C.  相似文献

A critical comparison of many characters suggests that the Rubiaceae tribe Anthospermeae is closely allied to the tribe Paederieae. The delimitation of the tribe Anthospermeae from other tribes is redefined as to include only wind-pollinated genera, and characters of fruit structure, pollination biology and distribution patterns support the subdivision of the tribe into the three subtribes: Anthosperminae, Operculariinae and Coprosminae.
All insect-pollinated genera previously placed in the Anthospermeae are transferred to the Paederieae. It is shown that the genus Neogaillonia Linchevskii ( = Gaillonia A. Rich. ex. DC), previously included in the Spermacoceae, also belongs to this tribe; the genera Pterogaillonia Linchevskii, Pseudogaillonia Linchevskii, Jaubertia Guill. and Choulettia Pomel are considered synonyms of Neogaillonia.
The Anthospermeae are believed to be closely, and the Paederieae more remotely, allied to the tribe Theligoneae.  相似文献

The highly complex ultrastructural morphology of the endomembrane system in Pneumocystis carinii led us to perform three-dimensional reconstruction from serial-thin sections using the CATIA (Conception Assistée Tridimensionnelle Inter Active) Dassault system program. The three-dimensional reconstruction of a small trophozoite made it possible to better understand the morphological relationship among organelles and to suggest cytophysiological hypotheses. By reconstructing other parasite stages, we gathered information about the evolution of organelles during the life cycle and about their physiology.  相似文献

Discs prepared from the outer pericarp of tomato (Lycopersiconesculentum Mill. cv. Sunny) and placed in buffer exhibit anenzymic release of pectin fragments. Over a 2.5 h period at34 °C, discs from mature-green, 4 d and 10 d postbreakerfruit released approximately 90, 440 and 675 µg galacturonicacid equivalents (g–1 disc fr. wt.), respectively. Bio-GelP-2 chromatography of the products revealed the presence ofpolymeric, oligomeric and monomeric uronic acids. The similarityof these products to those released from isolated, enzymatically-activecell walls and from enzymatically-inactive walls treated withpurified PG 2 provides evidence for the participation of polygalacturonase(PG, E. C. 3.2.1.15 [EC] ) in the release of pectin from disc tissue. The magnitude of pectin release from external pericarp discswas found to parallel ripening and increase progressively indiscs from the blossom, equatorial and shoulder regions, respectively.The use of discs and other systems to estimate in vivo PG activitywill be discussed. The southern African pholcid spiders previously assigned to Pholcus and Spermophora are revised and their phylogenetic position within Pholcidae is analysed cladistically. Two distinct groups are recognized: the first is restricted to the Cape region and probably correctly placed in Spermophora ; it includes Spermophora peninsulae Lawrence and four new species. The second is more widely distributed in southern and eastern South Africa, and reaches as far north as Cameroon, Congo (Democratic Republic) and Uganda; it is assigned generic status ( Quamtana gen. nov .), and includes two species transferred from Pholcus [ Q. leptopholcica (Strand), Q. ciliata (Lawrence)] as well as 23 new species. A key to the pholcid spiders of South Africa is presented. Exceptional fossilization of large tetrapod swimming traces occurs in the Cerin Lagerstätte (Jura Mountains, France). These trackways are imprinted in Jurassic (Late Kimmeridgian) lagoonal fine-grained limestones and are attributed to giant turtles, which swam with a simultaneous movement of their forelimbs like the modern ones. These turtles swam in very shallow waters close to land, perhaps near a nesting area. As a major consequence, these new ichnologic data place the origin of true large marine turtles during the Jurassic period and not during the Cretaceous period as previously considered on the basis of skeletal remains.  相似文献
