SYNOPSIS. All stages (except conjugation) of the life cycle in Acineta tuberosa (Suctoria) were studied in the electron microscope. Budding starts with the invagination of a small pellicular area near the opening of the vacuole and bearing rows of barren basal bodies. Some of these basal bodies are incorporated into the swarmer-anlage and give rise to 8 rows of cilia, while the other basal bodies remain barren on the mother cell's side of the brood pouch. They will provide their own genetic continuity and later give rise to the swarmer of the next generation. Kineties are not spaced on the growing swarmer-anlage until their cilia are fully grown. Further details on the stalk-forming crganelle and general features of the development of the larvae are given.
Metamorphosis starts with the formation of basal disc and stalk. The stalk-forming material is released thru scopular pores into a tube-like mold formed by the scopula after having been pulled inward. Later, scopula pores spread from the scopular area proper and move upward. On their way to the apical part of the animal the cuticle is secreted. The differentiation of tentacles is described and new observations regarding a possible mode of haptocyst formation are given.
The results are discussed with respect to the morphogenetic potentialities of cortical structures in general.  相似文献

We studied the prevalence and potential subclinical effects of infestation by Trichomonas gallinae in 91 hunter-harvested Common Wood Pigeons Columba palumbus from northern ( n  = 30) and southern ( n  = 61) Spain during the winter period. All animals were measured, sexed, aged, necropsied and their organs were weighed. Infestation with T. gallinae was diagnosed using three different methods: direct inspection for the presence of lesions, direct microscopic observation and culture. Of the sampled birds, 34.2% were positive for the presence of T. gallinae . Prevalence was significantly higher in adult Wood Pigeons than in the juvenile group, and prevalence was significantly lower in birds sampled from the north. No significant differences in prevalence were found between males and females. Culture was significantly more sensitive than the other methods of diagnosis. Parasitized birds were in poorer body condition, as revealed by their lower body mass and fat reserves. No significant variation could be detected in heart or spleen weight between parasitized and healthy birds. However, juvenile Wood Pigeons in which T. gallinae was detected had a significantly larger bursa of Fabricius. Variations in the prevalence of T. gallinae in Wood Pigeons could be related to migration as well as increased exposure through shared feed and water where these are artificially provided. We also discuss the potential effect of T. gallinae on body condition and the eventual risk for endangered predators through increased exposure to infected prey.  相似文献

The western Palearctic ant, Tetramorium moravicum , is the only species of the large genus known to display two alternative social strategies: macrogyny-monoygyny (characterized by one large queen per colony) and microgyny-polygyny (multiple small queens per colony). The microgyne colonies of this ant are confined to the westernmost part of its distribution area and occasionally co-occur with macrogyne colonies. We investigated phylogenetic and geographical patterns in relation to social strategy by analysing 1031 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene of T. moravicum from the entire known species range. Phylogenetic analyses revealed two clear-cut lineages coinciding with the eastern and western populations, which probably were separated after the late Quaternary glacial periods. Geographical distance analysis suggested allopatric fragmentation of the two lineages. We hypothesize that the two lineages colonized Central Europe postglacially from two directions. The current distribution gap of 500 km between the tip of the eastern lineage, in the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary, and the western lineage, in Germany, was confirmed by hierarchical population analysis. Macrogyny-monogyny probably was the original condition in T. moravicum ; the alternative strategy of microgyny-polygyny may have evolved at the tip of the western lineage, as recently as the early Holocene.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 247–255.  相似文献

Stomatal conductance of plants exposed to elevated CO2 is often reduced. Whether this leads to water savings in tall forest‐trees under future CO2 concentrations is largely unknown but could have significant implications for climate and hydrology. We used three different sets of measurements (sap flow, soil moisture and canopy temperature) to quantify potential water savings under elevated CO2 in a ca. 35 m tall, ca. 100 years old mixed deciduous forest. Part of the forest canopy was exposed to 540 ppm CO2 during daylight hours using free air CO2 enrichment (FACE) and the Swiss Canopy Crane (SCC). Across species and a wide range of weather conditions, sap flow was reduced by 14% in trees subjected to elevated CO2, yielding ca. 10% reduction in evapotranspiration. This signal is likely to diminish as atmospheric feedback through reduced moistening of the air comes into play at landscape scale. Vapour pressure deficit (VPD)‐sap flow response curves show that the CO2 effect is greatest at low VPD, and that sap flow saturation tends to occur at lower VPD in CO2‐treated trees. Matching stomatal response data, the CO2 effect was largely produced by Carpinus and Fagus, with Quercus contributing little. In line with these findings, soil moisture at 10 cm depth decreased at a slower rate under high‐CO2 trees than under control trees during rainless periods, with a reversal of this trend during prolonged drought when CO2‐treated trees take advantage from initial water savings. High‐resolution thermal images taken at different heights above the forest canopy did detect reduced water loss through altered energy balance only at <5 m distance (0.44 K leaf warming of CO2‐treated Fagus trees). Short discontinuations of CO2 supply during morning hours had no measurable canopy temperature effects, most likely because the stomatal effects were small compared with the aerodynamic constraints in these dense, broad‐leaved canopies. Hence, on a seasonal basis, these data suggest a <10% reduction in water consumption in this type of forest when the atmosphere reaches 540% ppm CO2.  相似文献

Proteome analysis, and more recently DNA chip technology, hasled to the identification of a large number of genes that areimplicated in the anaerobic response of plants. As a result,an increasingly complex picture of the response in terms ofbiochemical and regulatory processes is emerging. A challengeis to find out more about the function of these newly identifiedgene products, and how they contribute to flooding tolerance.Our approach has been to manipulate levels of candidate geneproducts (using sense and antisense constructs) in the modelsystem Arabidopsis thaliana, combined with biochemical and phenotypicanalysis of the resulting transgenic plants.  相似文献

While sex allocation has been investigated productively at both population and family levels, as yet no general theory has been developed that is capable of linking processes at these two ecological scales, and very few empirical studies have examined cross‐scale patterns. In Finnish northern goshawks (Accipiter gentilis), nestling sex ratio of local subpopulations is related to the spatial and temporal variation in the abundance of their principal avian prey, woodland grouse. Using data from an urban breeding population in Hamburg, Germany, I investigated: (1) whether brood sex ratio of goshawks varies with diet composition at the family level; (2) whether such variation could reflect adaptive adjustment; and (3) how family‐level allocation can drive population‐level patterns, such as those observed in Finland. Feral pigeons (Columba livia) were the most important prey species, with a pooled contribution to total diet of 36%. Brood sex ratio varied significantly with the proportion of pigeons in the breeding‐season diet of pairs (increasing male bias). However, there was no evidence for sex‐differential effects of diet composition, so it remains unclear whether the observed sex‐ratio variation was an adaptive response. As all study pairs inhabited an (urban) environment where pigeons were unusually abundant, family‐level sex‐ratio adjustment caused a marked male bias in offspring sex ratio at the population level (male‐biased nestling sex ratio in four of five years; pooled data: 60% males). This suggests that the large‐scale variation observed in Finnish goshawk populations mirrors sex‐ratio adjustment shown by individual families in response to small‐scale environmental conditions. Apart from linking patterns empirically across ecological scales, this study is, to my knowledge, the first to demonstrate that family‐level brood sex ratio varies with realized resource use (diet composition) in a raptor species. Previous studies either failed to find significant associations or, more commonly, violated theoretical assumptions by measuring environmental prey abundance (often integrated over large areas) rather than realized prey use of individual breeding pairs.
