Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is the most commonly used measure of developmental instability. The relation between FA and individual fitness remains controversial, partly due to limited knowledge on the mechanisms behind variation in FA. To address this, we investigated the associations between FA, growth and reproduction as well as the ontogeny of FA in a clonal population of Daphnia magna . FA was not correlated with growth and reproduction, either at the between- or the within-individual level, in a high ( N  = 48 individuals) or in a low ( N  = 52 individuals) food-quantity regime. There were therefore no indications of functional effects of FA or of phenotypic trade-offs between developmental stability, growth and reproduction. Individual asymmetries varied randomly in sign and magnitude between subsequent molts ( N  = 19 individuals, 9–11 instars), but the levels of FA were generally lowest at intermediate ages. No feedback between right and left sides was detected. This suggests that FA only reflects the most recent growth history, that developmental instability may increase in old age, and that FA depends on processes operating on each side of the body independently. The Pliocene Beds of the Pisco Formation on the southern coast of Peru have yielded three new skulls of the walrus-like odontocete, Odobenocetops (Delphinoidea, Cetacea). Two of the skulls are from a slightly younger horizon than the holotype of O. peruvianus and belong to a different species, O. leptodon . The holotype of O. leptodon bears a 135 cm long needle-like right tusk and a small 25 cm long left tusk, the apex of which was erupted. The third skull, referred to a female of O. peruvianus , bears two small tusks similar in size to the small left tusk of the holotype. The new specimens include periotic, tympanic and ear ossicles, which confirm referral to the Order Cetacea and the morphology of the humerus reinforces affinities of odobenocetopsids to monodontids. Because the anterodorsal edge of its orbit is slightly concave O. leptodon had reduced anterodorsal binocular vision, a condition compensated for by the probable presence of a small melon (and inferred echolocation). The head was bent ventrally when swimming in such a way that the long tusk was approximately parallel to the axis of the body. Abstract Stress physiology on the reproductive cells of Antarctic macroalgae remained unstudied. Ascoseira mirabilis is endemic to the Antarctic region, an isolated ecosystem exposed to extreme environmental conditions. Moreover, stratospheric ozone depletion leads to increasing ultraviolet radiation (280–400 nm) at the earth's surface, thus it is necessary to investigate the capacity of reproductive cells to cope with different UV irradiances. This study is aimed to investigate the impact of exposure to different spectral irradiance on the photosynthetic performance, DNA damage and gamete morphology of the A. mirabilis. Gametangia, gametes and zygotes of the upper sublittoral brown alga A. mirabilis were exposed to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR = P; 400–700 nm), P + UV‐A radiation (UV‐A, 320–400 nm) and P + UV‐A + UV‐B radiation (UV‐B, 280–320 nm). Rapid photosynthesis versus irradiance curves of freshly released propagules were measured. Photosynthetic efficiencies and DNA damage (in terms of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers) were determined after 1, 2, 4 and 8 h exposure as well as after 2 days of recovery in dim white light. Saturation irradiance (Ik) in freshly released propagules was 52 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Exposure for 1 h under 22 μmol photons m−2 s−1 of PAR significantly reduced the optimum quantum yield (Fv/Fm), suggesting that propagules are low light adapted. Furthermore, UVR significantly contributed to the photoinhibition of photosynthesis. Increasing dose as a function of exposure time additionally exacerbated the effects of different light treatments. The amount of DNA damage increased with the UV‐B dose but an efficient repair mechanism was observed in gametes pre‐exposed to a dose lower than 5.8 × 103 J m−2 of UV‐B. The results of this study demonstrate the negative impact of UV‐B radiation. However, gametes of A. mirabilis are capable of photosynthetic recovery and DNA repair when the stress factor is removed. This capacity was observed to be dependent on the fitness of the parental sporophyte.  相似文献

Abstract:  Cosmopolitan kutorginates, the most abundant Early Cambrian rhynchonelliformean brachiopods, became extinct at the end of the Middle Cambrian. Consequently, any information concerning the anatomy of this peculiar lineage of brachiopods has great phylogenetic significance with regard to their extant relatives for analogies with the stem-group clade. Such data have been supplied from fossils of which the soft parts have been preserved in exceptional detail. A new brachiopod, Kutorgina chengjiangensis sp. nov., from the Early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte of southern China, is described here. It is the first articulated brachiopod species collected from this deposit. The specimens preserve a set of soft-body parts, i.e. lophophore, digestive tract and pedicle, all previously poorly known in almost all Palaeozoic calcareous brachiopod taxa. The lophophore attains an early spirolophe stage, clearly homologous to that in the coeval lingulids. The digestive tract consists of a mouth, oesophagus, swollen stomach, intestine and a terminal anus. The pedicle protruding between the valves is stout and elongate, with annulated lamellae on the surface, and contains a putative cœlomic cavity. K. chengjiangensis displays the characteristics of the stem group of calcareous brachiopods, and illustrates anatomical similarities between Cambrian phosphatic- and calcareous-shelled brachiopods, thus corroborating that the Brachiopoda are a monophyletic group.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Wildlife-vehicle collisions cause numerous human fatalities and injuries, and generate considerable expenses in property damage each year. Certain characteristics of the road and its surroundings are known to have an impact on collision probability. Roadside salt pools increase the risk of collision by attracting moose (Alces alces) to the side of the road. In the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve of Québec, Canada, roadside salt pools were drained and filled with rocks to deter moose from drinking. We surveyed 12 roadside salt pools during 3 consecutive summers (2003–2005) from mid-May to mid-August. Seven salt pools were managed in autumn 2004, and 5 pools were left untreated. We equipped all 12 sites with electronic apparatus that allowed us to detect moose attendance and study their behavior. We also measured physical, chemical, and environmental characteristics of these pools and other unvisited pools in order to correlate moose attendance with specific habitat criteria. We found that moose mostly attended roadside salt pools from mid-June to mid-July, with a decrease in August. Moose attendance was significantly correlated with visual obstruction toward the road and water availability. Management of the pools caused a decrease in mean length of time moose spent at them. Number of visits decreased significantly at night (by 90%), which was when most visits occurred, but not during the day. The proposed management practice prevented all visiting moose from drinking brackish water. These results suggest that moose should eventually lose interest in treated salt pools, therefore decreasing the risk of moose-vehicle collisions on the road.  相似文献

ABSTRACT We developed and validated a density-adjusted spatial model to predict moose (Alces alces) highway-crossing probability to see if the model could be used as an index of moose-vehicle collision risk. We installed Global Positioning System telemetry collars on 47 moose in the north of the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve, Québec, for 2–36 months. We recorded only 84 highway crossings in spring (0.29% of 28,967 2-hr steps) and 122 crossings in summer (0.18% of 68,337 2-hr steps), despite a high sampling effort and having captured moose close to highways. Moose movement rates during movement steps crossing a highway were on average 3 times higher than during the steps preceding or following highway crossing. Paths used by moose when crossing a highway were characterized by a high proportion of food stands, low proportion of lakes and rivers, and topography typical of a valley. Highway-crossing sites were located in valleys with brackish pools and forest stands providing coniferous cover but a low proportion of lakes and rivers. We adjusted moose crossing probability for local variation in moose density using aerial survey data and assessed crossing probability along the highways in the entire Laurentides Wildlife Reserve. We tested the model using moose-vehicle accident data from 1990 to 2002. The relationship between the density-adjusted crossing probability and number of accidents was relatively loose at the 1-km scale but improved markedly when using longer highway sections (5–15 km; r > 0.80). Our results demonstrate that roads and their surroundings are perceived as low-quality habitat by moose. We also conclude that road segments installed along secondary valleys could be a highly strategic site to deploy mitigation measures such as fences and that it could be desirable to increase the width of road shoulders to reduce forest cover and to eliminate brackish pools to reduce cervid-vehicle collisions. We suggest using empirical data such as location of vehicle-wildlife collisions to plan mitigation measures at a fine scale.  相似文献

The cuticles of many extant seed plants display distinct surface microreliefs, which represent adaptations to certain habitat conditions or mechanical defences against herbivores and phytopathogenic microorganisms. Although microreliefs have variously been noted in fossil cuticles, hypotheses relating to the effectiveness of these structures in fossil plants have not been advanced to date. A surface microrelief composed of longitudinally orientated idiocuticular striae occurs on the leaves of the enigmatic Carnian (Late Triassic) gymnosperm (?ginkgophyte) Glossophyllum florinii Kräusel from the Northern Calcareous Alps of lower Austria. Most striae originate from the tips of the papillae on the stomatal subsidiary cells. The G. florinii surface microrelief may have (1) reduced leaf wettability, (2) produced or enhanced the self‐cleaning effect of the leaf, (3) prevented the formation of a water film on the leaf surface, and/or (4) mechanically stabilized the leaf. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 153 , 87–95.  相似文献

Spelaeogriphacea and Mictacea are enigmatic taxa within malacostracan crustaceans that play a pivotal role in peracarid phylogeny. Anatomical data on both taxa that are suitable for use in cladistic analyses are still scarce. Here, we provide for the first time detailed three-dimensional information on the major organ systems of Spelaeogriphacea and Mictacea (the circulatory system, the digestive system, and the central nervous system) using semithin sections in combination with computer aided three-dimensional reconstruction techniques. The digestive system in both Spelaeogriphus lepidops and Mictocaris halope is made up of a short oesophagus leading to a voluminous stomach chamber. Posteriorly, a pylorus is attached to the stomach chamber. An antechamber of the midgut glands is situated at the transition into the midgut, from which up to four tubular midgut glands emanate. The midgut is a straight tube running through the body terminating in a short hindgut. The central nervous system in the cephalothorax is made up of a brain and a suboesophageal ganglion. Both species show some reduction of the protocerebrum caused by the lack of eyes. The circulatory system is made up of a tubular heart that is situated in the thorax. It is equipped with two pairs of incurrent ostia in S. lepidops and one pair in M. halope . The only artery leading off the heart is the anterior aorta, which runs into the cephalothorax. A dilation is formed between the brain and the anterior stomach wall, into which oesophageal dilator muscles are internalized.
