Certain 6-acylaminopurines have been shown to exhibit activity in several cytokinin bioassays. The active compunds included 6-N,2′-O-dibutyryladenosine 3’:5′-cyclic monophosphate, but adenosine 3′:5′-cyclic monophosphate was inactive. The metabolites formed from [2,8-3H] 6-benzoylaminopurine by radish seedlings and excised radish cotyledons were investigated. When compared with zeatin, this amide showed considerable stability in vivo. Conversion to 6-benzylaminopurine and its riboside was not detected but slight degradation to adenine was indicated. The principal metabolite was an unidentified compund.  相似文献

Considerable progress has been made in the characterizationof immunoglobulin genes from several lower vertebrate taxa.Isolation and identification of immunoglobulin genes in phylogeneticallyprimitive species is based predominantly on heterologous crosshybridization.The unit, clustered organization of heavy chain segmental elementsobserved in the germline of the horned shark (Hinds and Litman,1986) has also been found in another elasmobranch. Studies todetermine whether the clustered organization is universal throughoutthe entire cartilaginous fish assemblage are ongoing. In contrast,the ray-finned (bony)fishes appear to possess a mammalian-typeheavy chain gene organization. Additionally, immunoglobulingenes are being characterized in two relict fish species whoseexact systematic relationships are unknown. Isolation of putativeimmunoglobulin genes from the phylogenetically- ancient hagfishis being attempted using a PCR-based approach. Other ongoingor future research efforts involve characterization of lowervertebrate light chain genes, heavy chain isotype evolution,and the divergence of the immunoglobulins and T-cell antigenreceptors  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. When peripheral nerves are cut, the axotomized nervesand denervated muscles undergo atrophic changes which are reversedonly when functional connections are remade in the periphery.The restored interaction completely reverses the effects ofaxotomy and denervation and leads to rematching of the sizeof the motoneuron, muscle unit force, speed and histochemicalproperties, according to the size principle. Differences inunit force and fatigue characteristics between motor unit typesare not fully restored in reinnervated muscles but do not obscuresize relationships between the motoneurons and their muscleunits. Although intact motoneurons will supply increased numbers ofmuscle fibers after partial nerve injuries, regenerating axonsappear to be limited in their ability to enlarge their muscleunits. Increased motor unit force in reinnervated slow motorunits is accounted for primarily by an increase in fiber diameter;fast motor units do not increase their mean force output. As a result of the rematching of muscle unit properties withthe size of the motoneurons that reinnervate them, motor unitproperties are appropriate for fine control of movement aftercomplete or partial nerve injuries. However, regenerating axonsdo not reinnervate their original muscle fibers and unless thefibers are injured close to the muscles, they often fail toreinnervate their original muscles. The mismatching of motorpools with inappropriate target muscles is probably the mainfactor responsible for poor recovery of motor function aftercomplete nerve injuries.  相似文献

The breeding system of sweet corn, a sugary seeded race of Zeamays L., was studied by randomly planting equal numbers of sweetand flint plants and determining the amount of cross-pollinationmeasured by the contamination on sweet ears. It was found thatinter-crossing with flint varied significantly from plant toplant; the out-crossing generally was lower than anticipated.The effects of date of silking and tasselling, and protandryof sweet plants on their out-crossing was demonstrated by usingmultiple regression analysis. Even so, as prediction was stillnot satisfactory other factors must have been involved. Thesevariables were all highly correlated. A relation between contaminationand temporal isolation was established; this was similar tothat for spatial isolation. It was postulated that there mayhave been genetical control of inter-pollination, as later earson the same sweet-corn plants were not less contaminated thanearlier ones and because out-crossing was generally low throughoutthe experiment.  相似文献

Understanding the evolutionary causes of phenotypic variation among populations has long been a central theme in evolutionary biology. Several factors can influence phenotypic divergence, including geographic isolation, genetic drift, divergent natural or sexual selection, and phenotypic plasticity. But the relative importance of these factors in generating phenotypic divergence in nature is still a tantalizing and unresolved problem in evolutionary biology. The origin and maintenance of phenotypic divergence is also at the root of many ongoing debates in evolutionary biology, such as the extent to which gene flow constrains adaptive divergence ( Garant et al. 2007 ) and the relative importance of genetic drift, natural selection, and sexual selection in initiating reproductive isolation and speciation ( Coyne & Orr 2004 ). In this issue, Wang & Summers (2010) test the causes of one of the most fantastic examples of phenotypic divergence in nature: colour pattern divergence among populations of the strawberry poison frog (Dendrobates pumilio) in Panama and Costa Rica ( Fig. 1 ). This study provides a beautiful example of the use of the emerging field of landscape genetics to differentiate among hypotheses for phenotypic divergence. Using landscape genetic analyses, Wang & Summers were able to reject the hypotheses that colour pattern divergence is due to isolation‐by‐distance (IBD) or landscape resistance. Instead, the hypothesis left standing is that colour divergence is due to divergent selection, in turn driving reproductive isolation among populations with different colour morphs. More generally, this study provides a wonderful example of how the emerging field of landscape genetics, which has primarily been applied to questions in conservation and ecology, now plays an essential role in evolutionary research.

Phylogenetic information is useful in understanding the evolutionary history of adaptive traits. Here, we present a well-resolved phylogenetic hypothesis for Heliconius butterflies and related genera. We use this tree to investigate the evolution of three traits, pollen feeding, pupal-mating behaviour and larval gregariousness. Phylogenetic relationships among 60 Heliconiina species (86% of the subtribe) were inferred from partial DNA sequences of the mitochondrial genes cytochrome oxidase I , cytochrome oxidase II and 16S rRNA, and fragments of the nuclear genes elongation factor-1α , apterous , decapentaplegic and wingless (3834 bp in total). The results corroborate previous hypotheses based on sequence data in showing that Heliconius is paraphyletic, with Laparus doris and Neruda falling within the genus, demonstrating a single origin for pollen feeding but with a loss of the trait in Neruda . However, different genes are not congruent in their placement of Neruda ; therefore, monophyly of the pollen feeding species cannot be ruled out. There is also a highly supported monophyletic 'pupal-mating clade' suggesting that pupal mating behaviour evolved only once in the Heliconiina. Global warming may explain the current poleward shift of species distributions. However, paradoxically, climatic warming can lead to microclimatic cooling in spring by advancing plant growth, an effect worsened by excess nitrogen. We suggest that spring-developing but thermophilous organisms, such as butterflies hibernating as egg or larva, are particularly sensitive to the cooling of microclimates. Using published data on butterfly trends in distribution, we report a comparatively greater decline in egg–larva hibernators in European countries with oceanic climates and high nitrogen deposition, which supports this explanation. Furthermore, trends in abundance from a nationwide butterfly monitoring scheme reveal a 63% decrease over 13 years (1992–2004) for egg–larva hibernators in the Netherlands, contrasting with a nonsignificant trend in adult–pupa hibernators. This evidence supports the hypothesis that these environmental changes pose new threats to spring-developing, thermophilous species. We underline the threat of climate change to biodiversity, as previously suggested on the basis of mobility, habitat fragmentation and evolutionary adaptation, but we here emphasize a different ecological axis of change in habitat quality.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Six hundred and forty-one lizards belonging to 28 species, and 29 snakes belonging to 12 species from East Africa were examined for blood sporozoans. Eight species of lizards and 4 of snakes were positive. Tissue phases were seen in some infections; no proven arthropod vectors were found. Parasites are described from previously unreported hosts; new host records, and new stages in the life histories of previously named parasites are reported. The sporozoans belong to the genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus, Haemogregarina or Hepatozoon, and probably Pirhemocyton. Reasons are given for the inadvisability of establishing new species of some of these on the basis of blood stages alone.  相似文献
