General ecophenotypic patterns, of particular interest when they apply to all, or most, taxa of the group concerned, can never be demonstrated until after monophyletic taxa have been recognized, that is, until after the initial stages of phylogeny construction have been carried out. In criticizing certain dalmanellid phylogenies, and based in large part on a study of five 'species subgroups'. Hurst & Watkins (1978; Geologica et Palaeontologica 12 ) postulate ecophenotypic patterns for Isorthis , and Hurst (1978; Palaeontology 21 ) postulates general patterns of ecophenotypic variation for dalmanellid brachiopods. These patterns may be invalid for four reasons: (1) Univariate and 'bivariate' statistical analysis of the samples used to define the five subgroups reveals no significant differences between subgroups, or vertical trends, for the very morphological characters claimed to exhibit the ecophenotypic patterns; (2) Hurst & Watkins' discriminant function analysis contains procedural errors and its results are ambiguous; (3) several of the five subgroups represent mixtures of unrelated taxa; (4) in recognizing the alleged patterns, Hurst & Watkins ignored contrary evidence from many taxa (and from many dalmanellid studies). □ Brachiopoda, Dalmanellidae, Silurian, ecology, evolution, systematics.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Population and production dynamics of Ceraclea ancylus (Vorhies), a leptocerid caddisfly with a univoltine life cycle, five larval instars, and a single cohort population, were examined in Brashears Creek, Kentucky. A systematic sampling approach that included analysis in riffle, pool, and waterwillow bed habitats was used and fourteen sampling transects were taken across Brashears Creek between May 1971 and July 1972. For each of the 70 m2 samples taken along a transect, the depth, habitat, and substrate type were recorded. The number of C. ancylus cases and numbers and dry weights of each larval instar were determined. The majority of the C. ancylus population was in the second larval instar in July, the third larval instar in August, the fourth larval instar in September, and the fifth larval instar from October through May. The spring population was 30% of the early instar maximum estimated the previous August. The spatial distribution of C. ancylus reflects a logarithmic pattern with early instar larvae more highly clumped than the late larval instar and pupal populations. Initial standing stock estimates were less than 1% of the standing stock biomass. A production estimate of 9.9 mg/m2·year (dry weight) was determined using the instantaneous growth method, Allen's Curve method, and the Hynes method of estimating secondary production. Turnover ratios (7.0 annual TR, 5.7 cohort TR) were higher than estimates reported as typical for benthic macroinvertebrates because of the low initial to final mean individual weight of the C. ancylus larvae (0.4%). Production estimates calculated for C. ancylus populations in waterwillow bed (4.4 mg/m2·year) and pool (13.7 mg/m2·year) habitats were less than calculated for the riffle population (19.9 mg/m2·year). The annual turnover ratio (10.2) was higher in the pool population than in other habitats because of spring larval migration into the pool from other habitats. A trend of higher production estimates with larger sized substrate particles and increased numbers of particles may reflect the increase in available food sources or attachment sites. The accuracy of production estimates and their applicability to water resource management may be limited by a failure to consider the spatial distributions of the population being sampled and the tendency for sampling procedures to be confined to single habitats.  相似文献

The various techniques in common use for conservation and restorationof depleted sea turtle populations are reviewed, namely: banninginternational commerce; operating artificial hatcheries, bothin the natural beach environment and in styrofoam and othertypes of incubators; "head-starting" of hatchlings in captivity;protection of nesting females by means of beach patrols; andtranslocation of eggs or hatchlings to distant areas from whichturtles have been extirpated or to which it is desired to introducenew colonies. The difficulties of monitoring the results ofall of these techniques are discussed, and potential dangersor disadvantages of each approach are reviewed. It is concludedthat, until unequivocal data become available, turtle conservationistsshould continue to pursue common sense or logically sound restorationprograms, but should constantly re-evaluate their actions inthe light of the latest available knowledge and modify or desistfrom current approaches as necessary.  相似文献

Quantitative treatment of the geological sciences must remain limited; there continues to be need for a language of words. This is keenly felt in stratigraphy, where the practising geologist is dismayed by the effusions of the stratigraphical philosophers. The situation, in so far as it appears to remain in some ways obscure or troublesome, is briefly reviewed in terms of lithostratigraphy. biostratigraphy. and chronostratigraphy. A revised version of a controversial diagram is presented, in which the role of the boundary stratotype as anchor point is believed to be clarified. A sensitive and reproducible method to obtain GA3 induced morphological reversion of mature Hedera helix to the juvenile form has been developed. Dose response experiments indicate that GA3 stimulates reversion over a 50–100 fold range with a half maximal response at approximately 0.5 μg GA3 per plant. The individual characteristics involved in phase change revert to the juvenile form in a sequential manner as GA3 dose is increased. Variations in light intensity from 1.2–3.6 × 104 lux and temperature from 15 to 26°C do not affect this hormonal response. Other growth regulators including indoleacetic acid, kinetin, abscisic acid and (2-chloroethyl)phosphonic acid (Ethephon) are inactive but other gibberellins (GA1 and a mixture of A4–A7) are active in stimulating reversion. Therefore, the response is specific for gibberellins as a class of hormones but non-specific for a particular form of gibberellin. The significance of this response in relation to juvenility in woody plants is discussed.  相似文献

Lanthanum fed to the base of excised leaves of Sesamum indicum L. and Helianthus annuus L. was used as a tracer to investigate by electron microscopy the path of water in the apoplast of leaves. The generally random distribution of lanthanum in cell walls provided no support for the hypothesis that cuticular transpiration may be greater for guard cells than for adjacent epidermal cells. Occasionally, accumulations of lanthanum were observed in anticlinal walls of epidermal cells and at the outer surface of the plasma membrane but lanthanum was not observed in the symplast. The influx of 86Rb to excised roots of sesame and sunflower was inhibited during incubation with 0.5 mM lanthanum or calcium for 15 or for 180 min. Stomata of sunflower partially closed when 2.5 mM lanthanum was supplied to the base of excised shoots in a potometer, whereas this treatment had little effect on stomatal conductance of sesame shoots maintained in a constant environment. Supplying 2.5 mM lanthanum to the base of sesame shoots strongly inhibited stomatal opening response to increase in ambient humidity but had little effect on stomatal opening response to light. It was concluded that stomatal opening response to increased humidity may be dependent upon some process, such as ion influx, that is inhibited by lanthanum, and that opening response to humidity may differ in mechanism from stomatal opening response to increased irradiance.  相似文献
