Background

The aetiology of central nervous system lesions observed in cerebral cyclosporine neurotoxicity remains controversial.

Case presentation

We report a 48-year-old woman with a non-severe aplastic anaemia who presented with stroke-like episodes while on cyclosporine treatment.Transcranial Doppler ultrasound revealed severely elevated flow velocities in several cerebral vessels, consistent with vasospasm. Immediately after reducing the cyclosporine dose, the stroke-like episodes disappeared. Only after cyclosporine withdrawal the transcranial Doppler ultrasound abnormalities fully resolved.

Conclusions

This case demonstrates a significant role of vasospasm in the pathway of cyclosporine-induced neurotoxicity. Transcranial Doppler ultrasound is an effective tool for the diagnosis and follow-up of cyclosporine-induced vasospasm.

Syrphids were not deterred from ovipositing on suitable plants by the presence of other syrphid eggs, larvae or larval gut contents. Heavy infestations of Aphis fabae Scop, on bean plants (Viciafaba L.) induced Platycheirus manicatus (Meig.) to lay preferentially on neighbouring uninfested plants. Such behaviour was not found for Syrphus species. Nor did flowers, a source of adult food, stimulate oviposition nearby. The site of oviposition in relation to Brevicoryne brassicae L. on brussels sprouts (Brassicae oleracea gemnifera L.) varied markedly according to species: in similar conditions Syrphus luniger Meig. laid over 50% of its eggs touching aphids and less than 1% on uninfested plants, whereas P. manicatus laid less than 5% touching aphids and over 50% on uninfested plants. Most eggs were laid close to the edge of the leaf, especially by Platycheirus species, e.g. P. scutatus Meig. which laid over 90% within 5 mm of the edge of the leaf.  相似文献

Although most aphidophagous syrphid species lay their eggs close to aphids, Platycheirus peltatus (Meig.), Melanostoma scalare (F.) and M. mellinum (L.) laid freely on uninfested brussels sprout plants. The existence of species that will lay in the absence of aphids may be valuable in biological control and also provides a useful tool for the investigation of non-aphid oviposition stimuli. Plant species and plant appearance were both important factors in P. peltatus oviposition. Particular sites on the plant were chosen for oviposition by Syrphus balteatus (Deg.). The nature of the substrate at the oviposition site affected the size of the egg batches laid there by M. scalare, M. mellinum, P. peltatus and P. clypeatus (Meig.). The possibility is discussed that plant-location is the older-established system of host-finding and that an aphid-location system has gradually superseded it during the evolution of the obligatorily aphidophagous Syrphinae.  相似文献

A low concentration of yeast extract (0·1%) in liquid media favoured rapid growth and high percentage of viable cells in cultures of Rhizobium japonicum (CB 1809), R. lupini (WU 425), R. meliloti (SU 47), R. trifolii (TA1) and a cowpea strain (CB 756). Concentrations of yeast extract > 0·35% depressed viability and produced distorted cells in all strains except SU 47: TA1 was especially sensitive. When used at 0·5–1% (w/v), each yeast extract (Difco, Oxoid, Vegemite) or casein hydrolysate produced greatly enlarged abnormal cells of TA1, each containing several granules of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate and whorls of intracytoplasmic membranes, and showing greater internal disorganisation than that seen in root nodule bacteroids. Lysogenic and non-lysogenic cultures of R. trifolii were all sensitive to yeast extract, and such sensitivity, for strains of several species, was unrelated to effectiveness in nodulating host plants. Glycine inhibited growth of all strains tested. Several other amino acids occurring in casein hydrolysate inhibited TA1 strongly and induced formation of distorted cells and spheroplasts; this distortion was partly counteracted by adding salts of calcium or magnesium. In media with 0·1% yeast extract the use of mannitol, sucrose, lactose or galactose as alternative carbon sources, each at a concentration of 0·02–1%, did not affect numbers of viable rhizobia or cell shape in all strains tested.  相似文献

Following application of effluent from apparently healthy pigs to land, Salmonella havana was isolated from kilogram samples, irregularly and at low frequency, for eight months from soil and for nearly two from pasture. Faecal coliform organisms on the effluent disposal site decreased rapidly in numbers during the first month following application of effluent at the start of the autumn. They were then maintained at about 100 organisms/g of topsoil until late in the following spring.  相似文献
