Psychophysical visual analog scaling can be used to reveal critical determinants of the neural processing underlying non-painful and painful heat sensations produced by radiant and contact heat stimulation. This study determined the stimulus-response (S-R) functions of cutaneous non-painful and painful heat stimuli delivered by an infra-red CO2 laser or by a contact thermode in a series of experiments in healthy volunteers. In experiment 1 ( n = 12), with the rating scale anchored at pain threshold, the S-R curve for brief (60 ms) laser pulse stimulation with a beam diameter of 10 mm was a negatively accelerating function. Transformation of laser stimulus intensity (W) into temperatures ( C) did not change the form of the S-R curve. In experiment 2 ( n=9), using the same laser stimulus parameters as in experiment 1, but without an anchored rating scale, the form of the S-R relationship did not change. In experiment 3 ( n =9), increases of the laser pulse duration up to 5 s and the beam diameter up to 18 mm produced linear S-R curves. In contrast, in experiment 4 ( n =21), the S-R curve for cutaneous contact heat stimuli applied for 5 s with an 18 mm diameter probe was best described by a positively accelerating power function with an exponent greater than 2.0. These experiments have (1) characterized the S-R functions for different parameters of infra-red laser stimulation of the skin, and (2) have shown that the form of the S-R function for innocuous and noxious heat sensation is influenced strongly by the physical conditions of heat stimulus application, including mechanical contact with the skin.  相似文献

The effect of the day length on the accumulation and the degradationof the starch in leaf, stem and root tissues of prefloweringsoybean plants was determined by growing plants under a 7 or14 h light regime. As has been reported previously, the rateof starch accumulation by leaves was inversely related to daylength. High sucrose content was associated with a high rateof starch accumulation. Stem tissue showed diurnal fluctuationsin starch content and the rate of accumulation was also inverselyrelated to day length. This starch resulted from photosynthesiswithin the stem itself. A negligible amount of starch was foundin root tissue of both sets of plants. The rate of starch breakdown in leaves of 7 h plants was significantlyless than that in 14 h plants. Nevertheless, leaf starch inshort day length plants was depleted at least 4 h prior to theend of the dark period. In both sets of plants, degradationof stem starch started simultaneously with that in the leavesand continued throughout the dark period, although at a muchlower rate than that of leaves. Thus, stem starch acted as abuffer once leaf starch was depleted, providing carbohydratesto the plant, although in small quantities. To determine if soybean leaves adjust their rate of starch accumulationduring the light period to different dark period temperatures,plants were grown under temperature regimes of 30/20 °Cand 30/30 °C. Plants did not differ in rate of starch accumulationor CO2 exchange rate, but did show large differences in growthcharacteristics. High temperature plants had significantly greaterleaf area and tended to have greater leaf area ratio. Thus,despite similar rates of starch accumulation on a leaf areabasis, high temperature plants accumulated greater amounts ofstarch on a per plant basis. The Aspergillus fumigatus chsE (AfchsE) gene was isolated from an A. fumigatus DNA library on the basis of hybridization to a segment of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CHS3 (ScCHS3). The amino acid sequence derived from AfchsE is 28% identical with ScCHS3 and 80% identical with the product of Aspergillus nidulans chsD (AnchsD). A mutant strain constructed by disruption of AfchsE has reduced levels of mycelial chitin, periodic swellings along the length of hyphae, and a block in conidiation that can be partially restored by growth in osmotic stabilizer. This phenotype is different from that reported for an AnchsD mutant, in which germinating conidia and hyphal tips undergo lysis and the colonial growth rate is significantly reduced. Despite the defects associated with the AfchsE- strain, its virulence was not significantly reduced when compared with the wild-type parental strain in a mouse model of pulmonary aspergillosis.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Statistical analysis has been carried out on 11 years (1965–75) weekly data of nitrate concentrations and discharge values from the R. Frome (Dorset). The results have shown a trend over the 11-year period with nitrate concentrations increasing by 0.11 mg NO3-N 1−1 per year. A predictive model for nitrate concentrations for 1976 was made and even though discharge conditions were extreme, the mean predicted nitrate concentration of 3.37 ± 0.136 mgNO3-N1−1 was very close to the observed mean nitrate concentration of 3.44mgN03-N1−1.  相似文献

The chemical speciation of silicon in xylem exudate from wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was examined by 29Si NMR spectroscopy. Wheat plants were grown to maturity in silicon‐free nutrient medium, and then transferred to a solution containing 0.02 mm 29Si‐enriched silicic acid. After 30 min the shoots were excised and xylem exudate was collected. Within 10 min the Si concentration of the xylem exudate reached values greatly in excess of that of the starting nutrient solution, eventually reaching levels as high as 8 mm . Silicon‐29 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra indicated the existence of only two Si‐containing species in the xylem exudate, mono and disilicic acid (H4SiO4o and (HO)3Si(µ‐O)Si(OH)3o) in a ratio of approximately 7 : 1. Significantly, there was no evidence of organosilicate complexes. Nevertheless, the efficiency by which the plant concentrates aqueous silicon indicates active mechanisms of silicon transport across root cell membranes.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Plant traits (e.g. nutrition, allelochemistry) are an important determinant of the feeding preferences and performance of insect herbivores. Recent evidence suggests that plant inbreeding can affect plant–insect interactions by impacting host‐plant quality and resistance to herbivory. 2. The effect of inbreeding on host‐plant quality for, and resistance against, the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta L., was assessed in the wild solanaceous weed horsenettle, Solanum carolinense L. Caterpillar preference, relative growth rate (RGR), total leaf consumption (TC), and per cent total nitrogen in leaves were examined using selfed and outcrossed progeny of eight maternal plants. 3. Inbreeding significantly influenced insect preference, with caterpillars preferring leaf discs from selfed versus outcrossed plants. There was also a breeding effect for RGR and TC, with both higher on selfed plants. No breeding effect for per cent total nitrogen was observed. 4. The results of this study indicate that inbreeding decreased resistance against the tobacco hornworm, but did not affect plant quality. Decreased plant resistance will likely alter interactions with the herbivore community and could also have important consequences for plant–herbivore–natural enemy interactions.  相似文献

Ethnomathematics is the study of mathematical ideas and practices situated in their cultural context. Culturally Situated Design Tools (CSDTs) are web-based software applications that allow students to create simulations of cultural arts—Native American beadwork, African American cornrow hairstyles, urban graffiti, and so forth—using these underlying mathematical principles. This article is a review of the anthropological issues raised in the CSDT project: negotiating the representations of cultural knowledge during the design process with community members, negotiating pedagogical features with math teachers and their students, and reflecting on the software development itself as a cultural construction. The move from ethnomathematics to ethnocomputing results in an expressive computational medium that affords new opportunities to explore the relationships between youth identity and culture, the cultural construction of mathematics and computing, and the formation of cultural and technological hybridity.  相似文献
