In future elevated CO2 environments, chewing insects are likely to perform less well than at present because of the effects of increased carbon fixation on their host plants. When the aphid, Aulacorthum solani was reared on bean ( Vicia faba ) and tansy ( Tanacetum vulgare ) plants under ambient and elevated CO2, performance was enhanced on both hosts at elevated CO2. The nature of the response was different on each plant species suggesting that feeding strategy may influence an insect's response to elevated CO2. On bean, the daily rate of production of nymphs was increased by 16% but there was no difference in development time, whereas on tansy, development time was 10% shorter at elevated CO2 but the rate of production of nymphs was not affected. The same aphid clone therefore responded differently to elevated CO2 on different host plants. This increase in aphid performance could lead to larger populations of aphids in a future elevated CO2 environment.  相似文献

The maximal architectural development of a modern maize cultivar(Zea mays L. ‘Dea’) was studied in fully isolatedand carefully irrigated plants. Under these favourable conditions,this (usually) non-tillering and non-prolific cultivar displayeda large amount of branching (down to the third order), includinglarge basal tillers and prolific ear shoots. This developmentwas analysed by combining: (1) architectural analysis, initiallydeveloped for trees; and (2) quantitative analysis of tilleringkinetics, designed for other grass species. The architecturalunit of maize included a main long axis (A1) and lateral shortshoots bearing a terminal spike (A2). The basal tillers (notedA1') resulted from a complete and sylleptic reiteration. Itskinetics were consistent with tillering models, but with a particularlylong delay in branch emergence (seven phyllochrons), comparedto other grass species. This delay is likely to enhance regulationby leaf (or root) density in stands and explains the inhibitionof branch development, as usually observed in field conditions,even at low density. Similarly, the suppression of the basalreiteration in secondary branches observed in isolated plantsprobably results from increased intra-tussock density. In isolatedplants, androgenous axes combining A1' and A2 morphologies werealso produced in intermediate positions. It is shown that theycan result from a basipetal sequence of A2 differentiation reachingbuds in the course of their A1' development. The consequencesof these unexpected results are discussed in terms of maizedevelopment and architectural analysis of grasses. 1. Variation in larval food composition can have far‐reaching effects on the adult phenotype of insects. To maximise reproductive output, it is therefore beneficial if insects are able to plastically adapt to nutritional cues in their larval diet. 2. The expression of sexual traits implicated in pre‐ and postcopulatory sexual selection of the lesser wax moth, Achroia grisella Fabricius, across different rearing environments of varying diet composition was investigated. 3. Moths reared on diet with relatively low amounts of carbohydrate, but more protein and fats, had lower survival rates, decreased body mass, and longer development times. Males reared on this diet produced songs with higher pulse pair rates (which are attractive to females) and transferred more sperm per copulation than males reared on the alternative diets. 4. There was no evidence for a trade‐off between pre‐ and postcopulatory traits. Interestingly, individuals with both higher pulse pair rates and more transferred sperm came from the treatment group with higher mortality rates and generally poorer development. The present results suggest that both of these sexual characteristics are developmentally plastic, but that only moths reared on the protein‐rich diet were able to benefit from this plasticity.  相似文献

Abstract:  Coprolites from the Arcadia Formation, Queensland, Australia, were studied in conjunction with the vertebrate fossil assemblages from two localities to maximize our understanding of the palaeoecology of these Early Triassic deposits. Criteria used by other researchers to identify the producers of coprolites were found to be of little value in the Arcadia Formation specimens. Using a combination of shape, biostratigraphic distribution, size and included remains some of the coprolites are attributed to basal archosauromorphs and fish whereas others could not be identified. Perhaps the most important attribute of the Arcadia coprolites is that they preserved rare organisms such as cyanobacteria, insects and other arthropods, and a diversity of fish. Estimates of the number of actinopterygians and dipnoans preserved in coprolites significantly increased relative abundance estimates based on skeletal elements alone. Although coprolites are an important source of palaeobiological information, this information is limited by our poor understanding of the taphonomic processes involved in the fossilization of faecal matter and by the near impossibility of assigning coprolites to specific producers.  相似文献

Jerboas belonging to the genus Jaculus are widely distributed rodents inhabiting Palearctic desert and semi‐desert areas. Previous studies on the lesser Egyptian jerboa Jaculus jaculus showed the existence of various morphological forms of controversial taxonomic status. They were sometimes related to two different species, J. jaculus and Jaculus deserti, although this has not been recognized in recent taxonomic updates. To clarify the systematic status of J. jaculus in Tunisia, we performed molecular (phylogenetic analyses of cytochrome b sequences), morphological (multivariate analyses of 13 skull measurements) and karyotypic (standard preparations from bone marrow cells) analyses on a number of specimens collected from ten localities. Our analyses revealed two monophyletic, well differentiated clades, with a mean genetic divergence value (K2P = 10.9 ± 0.01%), which is within the range of distances generally observed between rodent species. Morphometric analyses clearly separated populations of the two genetic clades from each other. However, karyotypes of individuals from both clades appeared similar. Individuals from both molecular clades/morphometric groups were found in sympatry in most of the localities sampled. These results, as obtained from a restricted area of the total distribution, suggest that there are two separate species within the currently accepted J. jaculus in Tunisia. Thresholds and responses to capsaicin in oil- and water-based model systems were compared. Thresholds were measured among 23 individuals using an ascending forced choice method of limits. Detection thresholds were 11.75 (± 1.31) mg/L in oil and 0.31 (± 0.03) mg/L in water. A horizontal labeled magnitude scale was used to obtain suprathreshold scaling functions in corn and soybean oils and in water systems using an emulsifier (polysorbate) or alcohol to solvate the capsaicin. In the water-based systems, capsaicin ranged from weak to very strong ratings over a range of 0.3 to 10 mg/L while the same perceptual range was achieved in oil over a range of 10 to 316 mg/L. Nonconsumers of hot/spicy foods generally had higher thresholds and higher suprathreshold responses in oil systems. Differences between user groups were less pronounced in water-based stimuli.  相似文献

The development of new analytical methods, aimed at profiling G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) ligands, regardless of the G protein-coupling pattern of their respective receptor, remains a key goal in drug discovery. Considerable evidence has recently revived the central role that could be played by extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK), the cornerstone protein kinase of the first tyrosine kinase receptor-mediated pathway identified, in response to the activation of various types of GPCRs. Here we reveal a conceptual study in which the potential of ERK phosphorylation is evaluated as a generic readout in response to three different receptors activating three main classes of G proteins: Gαs, Gαi and Gα q. GPCR-mediated ERK phosphorylation was compared with different readouts such as GTPγ S, CAMP, or Ca2 +. We propose the measurement of GPCR-activated ERK phosphorylation as an alternative assay to better understand the molecular pharmacology of ligands of promiscuous GPCRs.  相似文献
