Eleocharis subarticulata is recorded as the third species of Cyperaceae with a reduced chromosome number ( n  = 3), following reports on Rhynchospora tenuis ( n  = 2) and Fimbristylis umbellaris ( n  = 3). For Eleocharis, the numbers recorded to date vary from 2 n  = 10 to 2 n  = c. 196, with x  = 5 as the possible basic number. The karyotype of E. subarticulata was studied using conventional staining (mitosis and meiosis), C-CMA3/DAPI banding, and FISH with 45S rDNA and telomere probes. The chromosomes showed no primary constrictions, as expected in the holocentric chromosomes of Cyperaceae. The meiotic behaviour was abnormal, with a single multivalent ring of six chromosomes at metaphase I, resulting from multiple translocations. At anaphase I six chromatids migrated to each pole, evidencing the inverted meiosis, and these groups were also visible at metaphase II. The C-CMA3/DAPI banding technique showed only four terminal GC-rich blocks. FISH with 45S rDNA probes revealed four terminal signals, probably associated with GC-rich blocks. The telomeric probe located terminal signals in all the chromosomes, besides a hybridization site in the middle of the large pair. The occurrence of ectopic telomeric sites has not been described previously for plants with holokinetic karyotypes and with reduced chromosome numbers. Abstract.  Ethological studies are conducted under laboratory conditions using workers of Atta sexdens sexdens and Atta opaciceps collected from field colonies to investigate the mechanisms involved in the alarm response and intra-specific recognition in leaf-cutting ants. Hexane extracts from the heads of gardeners and generalist workers elicit higher levels of alarm response in foragers from the same colony than do mandibular gland extracts from foragers and soldiers, indicating that gardeners, generalists and foragers are primarily responsible for the production of alarm pheromone. Foragers subjected to extracts from non-nestmates exhibit significantly greater alarm responses than are induced by similar extracts derived from nestmate workers, suggesting that the alarm pheromone may have a role in nestmate recognition.  相似文献

Ceratozamia chimalapensis sp. nov. is described and illustrated. It is related to C. mirandae Vovides, Pérez-Farrera & Iglesias from Chiapas, but differs in trunk and peduncle size as well as in diameter of both megastrobili and microstrobili. Petiole, megasporophyll and indument colour also differ from that of C. mirandae . Ceratozamia chimalapensis forms part of the C. norstogii D.W.Stev. species complex, a group of ceratozamias with narrow leaflets growing in the herbaceous layer of oak forests in southern Mexico. These forests were severely affected by forest fires during 1998 and we recommend an IUCN Red List Category of CR B.1. In the next few decades, climate of the Amazon basin is expected to change, as a result of deforestation and rising temperatures, which may lead to feedback mechanisms in carbon (C) cycling that are presently unknown. Here, we report how a throughfall exclusion (TFE) experiment affected soil carbon dioxide (CO2) production in a deeply weathered sandy Oxisol of Caxiuanã (Eastern Amazon). Over the course of 2 years, we measured soil CO2 efflux and soil CO2 concentrations, soil temperature and moisture in pits down to 3 m depth. Over a period of 2 years, TFE reduced on average soil CO2 efflux from 4.3±0.1 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 (control) to 3.2±0.1 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 (TFE). The contribution of the subsoil (below 0.5 m depth) to the total soil CO2 production was higher in the TFE plot (28%) compared with the control plot (17%), and it did not differ between years. We distinguished three phases of drying after the TFE was started. The first phase was characterized by a translocation of water uptake (and accompanying root activity) to deeper layers and not enough water stress to affect microbial activity and/or total root respiration. During the second phase a reduction in total soil CO2 efflux in the TFE plot was related to a reduction of soil and litter decomposers activity. The third phase of drying, characterized by a continuing decrease in soil CO2 production was dominated by a water stress‐induced decrease in total root respiration. Our results contrast to results of a drought experiment on clay Oxisols, which may be related to differences in soil water retention characteristics and depth of rooting zone. These results show that large differences exist in drought sensitivity among Amazonian forest ecosystems, which primarily seem to be affected by the combined effects of texture (affecting water holding capacity) and depth of rooting zone.  相似文献

The effect of magnesium (Mg2+)‐deficiency on the antioxidant responses of Capsicum annuum was investigated over a 60‐day period under controlled conditions. This Mg2+‐deficiency aimed to mimic the physiological conditions that plants may experience in the field. At each harvest time, five different leaf‐levels (L2 to L6) were distinguished. L2 and L6 correspond to the second and sixth youngest leaves, respectively. The following parameters were determined: Mg2+, chlorophyll and protein contents, total and redox pools of ascorbate and glutathione, and the activities of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, dehydroascorbate reductase, and glutathione reductase. Under Mg2+‐deficiency, leaf Mg2+ contents decreased over time in all leaf‐levels except in the second youngest leaves (L2), where they remained constant at about 0.25% (dry weight basis). Mg2+‐deficiency led to an increase in the antioxidant enzyme activities concomitant with an increase in the ascorbate and glutathione pools, whereas total chlorophyll and soluble protein contents decreased. The L2 leaves showed an increase in glutathione reductase activity and in the ascorbate redox state whereas no difference was observed for the other parameters. Superoxide dismutase activities increased in L5 leaves from day 15 and, afterwards, in L3 to L5 leaves, irrespective of Mg2+ content. At day 30, glutathione reductase activities increased in L2 to L4 leaves and dehydroascorbate reductase activities in L4 leaves. At day 45, we observed an increase in the ascorbate peroxidase activities in L3 to L5 leaves. At the same time, ascorbate and glutathione pools increased in intermediate leaves, whereas chlorophyll content decreased in L3 and L4 leaves, and protein content decreased in L4 leaves. Results suggest that pepper leaves enhance their defence capacities against oxidative stress by increasing ascorbate more than glutathione synthesis. However, cells showed higher regeneration rates for the glutathione redox state than for the ascorbate redox state.  相似文献

Thirty specimens of Arion intermedins from Flores (and Corvo) were electrophoretically (PAGE) assayed for 11 enzymes, yielding information about 14 putative loci in two colour morphs of this species. One of these colour variants was tentatively identified as A. pascalianus (P morph). Except for the Mdh locus, all loci in A. intermedins sensu lato from Flores were monomorphic. Mdh , however, was diallelic for Mdh100 and Mdh122. This latter electromorph was absent in A. intermedins sensu stricto from Flores, but present in the P morph and A. intermedins from Belgium. As a consequence A. intermedins sensu lato from Flores consists of two genetic strains defined by the Mdh alleles. The genetic identity between these strains (7) is 0.929. The genetic identity between the P morph and A. intermedins sensu stricto in Flores is 0.951, while between the P morph and Belgian A. intermedins it is 0.973. These values suggest that the supposed A. pascalianus from Flores is only a colour morph of A. intermedins. This paper also provides the first published record of this species from the island of Corvo.  相似文献

The new microsporidium (Microsporida: Pereziidae), Perezia dichroplusae n. sp., infects the epithelial cells of the Malpighian tubules of the Argentine grasshopper Dichroplus elongatus. Characteristics of the pathogen include the following: development in direct contact with the host cell cytoplasm; bi-, tetra-, and sometimes multinucleate diplokaryotic meronts, rounded or elongate in shape; unikaryotic sporonts and sporogonial plasmodia, elongate in shape; sporoblasts and spores uninucleated; spores highly variable in size (1.6–6.7 by 1.0–2.7 μm, x?= 3.5 ± 0.09 by 1.5 ± 0.02, n = 100) with eight or fewer polar tube coils and showing a posterior electron-dense inclusion body.  相似文献

Sera from eighteen control sheep supposed to be free from parasitism by Oestrus ovis Linnaeus, 1761, and from 100 sheep raised in an enzootic area of O.ovis infestations were tested to detect anti-Oestrus antibodies by double immunodiffusion (DD) and indirect haemagglutination (IH) tests with somatic crude antigens from first (L1), second (L2) and third (L3) instar of O.ovis larvae. At necropsy, eighty-eight out of 100 sheep from the O.ovis infested area were found to be parasitized while the eighteen control ovines did not show Oestrus larvae. Examination of the sera from the parasitized sheep by DD showed positive results of 42% for L1, 59% for L2 and 18% for L3. Screening the sera with IH gave sensitivities of 100% for L1, 100% for L2 and 97.7% for L3. Sheep, naturally parasitized by gastrointestinal nematodes, presented no cross immune reactions in DD tests with the three larval stages of O.ovis or with L2 larvae in IH tests.  相似文献
