Shallow lakes, the most abundant lake type in the world, are very sensitive to climatic changes. The structure and functioning of shallow lakes are greatly impacted by submerged plants, and these may be affected by climate warming in various, contrasting, ways. Following a space‐for‐time substitution approach, we aimed to analyse the role of aquatic (submerged and free‐floating) plants in shallow lakes under warm climates. We introduced artificial submerged and free‐floating plant beds in five comparable lakes located in the temperate zone (Denmark, 55–57 °N) and in the subtropical zone (Uruguay, 30–35 °S), with the aim to study the structure and dynamics of the main associated communities. Regardless of differences in environmental variables, such as area, water transparency and nutrient status, we found consistent patterns in littoral community dynamics and structure (i.e. densities and composition of fish, zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, and periphyton) within, but substantial differences between, the two regions. Subtropical fish communities within the macrophyte beds exhibited higher diversity, higher density, smaller size, lower relative abundance of potentially piscivores, and a preference for submerged plants, compared with otherwise similar temperate lakes. By contrast, macroinvertebrates and cladocerans had higher taxon richness and densities, and periphyton higher biomass, in the temperate lakes. Several indicators suggest that the fish predation pressure was much stronger among the plants in the subtropical lakes. The antipredator behaviour of cladocerans also differed significantly between climate zones. Submerged and free‐floating plants exerted different effects on the spatial distribution of the main communities, the effects differing between the climate zones. In the temperate lakes, submerged plants promoted trophic interactions with potentially positive cascading effects on water transparency, in contrast to the free‐floating plants, and in strong contrast to the findings in the subtropical lakes. The higher impact of fish may result in higher sensitivity of warm lakes to external changes (e.g. increase in nutrient loading or water level changes). The current process of warming, particularly in temperate lakes, may entail an increased sensitivity to eutrophication, and a threat to the high diversity, clear water state.  相似文献

The diversity of the Iberian vascular flora has been investigated using WORLDMAP versions 3.08 and 3.18. Two data sets scoring plant distributions as presences within the Iberian Peninsula were compiled; one for 2133 species at 50 × 50 km grid and the other for 801 species at 10 × 10 km map grids. Patterns of biodiversity were determined using the diversity measures of species richness, range-size rarity and character richness diversity. Using the diversity measures, combined with an area selection method, maps of priority areas were calculated using iterative procedures. Near minimum sets (NMSs) for both scales were calculated. Comparison of the NMS for the 10 × 10 km grid with the near minimum set for existing reserves (NMSER) showed that at least 2% more of the land surface would be required above and beyond the existing protected area network, currently comprising 6% of the area, to ensure representation of all species at least once as listed within the present data-base. It is demonstrated that reserve systems selected on a variety of different criteria are suboptimal when compared to particular groups of target organisms with a definite goal of representation for conservation. Calculating efficiency of existing reserve systems and accounting for all taxa identifies precisely the extra required areas for the protected area system to satisfy particular goals of representation.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. In haplodiploid organisms, virgin or sperm-depleted females can reproduce but are constrained to produce only male progeny. According to Godfray's constrained model, when p , the proportion of females constrained to produce only male progeny, is not null in a panmictic population, unconstrained females should bias their sex allocation towards females to compensate for the excess of males. These unconstrained females should be able to adjust the sex ratio in response to local variation of p .
2. In this paper an experimental approach is used to test the hypotheses of this model in the solitary endoparasitoid Venturia canescens under both field and laboratory conditions. Specifically, it is tested whether unconstrained females use their encounters with conspecifics (either male or female) to estimate p and then adjust their sex ratio accordingly.
3. As assumed by Godfray's model, constrained females actively search for host patches in the field and under laboratory conditions produce the same number of offspring during their lifetime as unconstrained females. As predicted by the model, unconstrained females produce a sex ratio biased towards females both in the laboratory and in the field.
4. The results show that this bias is not a response to encounters with conspecifics previous to oviposition. The hypothesis that the bias is due to differential mortality between sexes during ontogeny is also rejected. The proportions of constrained ovipositions estimated in two natural populations explain only a small fraction of the sex ratio bias observed in V. canescens.  相似文献

Female Osyris quadripartita plants exhibit uninterrupted reproductive activity throughout the year, due to the long duration of successive stages in the cycle and marked within-crop developmental asynchrony. Cycles corresponding to the flowering seasons of consecutive years overlap in each individual. Flowering takes place in spring, and fruits develop in the dry summer season and ripen at any time of the year. Variation in flowering time explains a negligible proportion of variation in ripening time. The greatest reproductive losses are incurred in the phase extending from closed flowers through unripe fruits, mostly due to ovary abortion. Only 30% of closed flowers eventually reach this latter stage. In contrast, 75% of unripe fruits complete their development, with subsequent dispersal of seeds. The probability of the setting of ripe fruit steadily decreases from early to late season flowers, due to increased ovary abortion rates. Resource limitation in the dry summer season seems responsible for this pattern of selective fruit maturation.  相似文献

Pérez‐Huerta, A., Cusack, M. & Méndez, C.A. 2011: Preliminary assessment of the use of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) in conodonts. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 253–258. Conodonts are extensively used as ‘geochemical tools’ in palaeoenvironmental reconstructions in Palaeozoic and Triassic strata. The retention of a primary geochemical signal is substantially dependent on the ultrastructural integrity and crystallinity after diagenesis. Direct assessments of the preservation potential of the polycrystalline matrix are scarce with the exception of the application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The possible application of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) is introduced for well‐preserved Pennsylvanian platform conodont elements as a novel in situ technique based on successful previous results for biogenic carbonates. EBSD shows the presence of no diffraction in central regions of all studied elements of Idiognathodus and Adetognathus, with possible implications for geochemistry analysis. The absence of diffraction could be attributed to the existence of an amorphous phase, water (+OH) or a process of hypocalcification related to the development of ‘growth cavities’ in the lamellar crown tissue. Overall results indicate the suitability of using EBSD to extract crystallographic information from conodonts and potentially for other apatite (micro‐) fossils. □Conodont, diagenesis, EBSD, geochemistry, Pennsylvanian.  相似文献

In simultaneous hermaphrodites with reciprocal mating, multiple mating may be a male strategy that conflicts with female interests, and therefore an intra‐individual sexual conflict regarding the number of matings may be expected. The evolutionary outcome of this sexual conflict will depend on the costs and benefits that extra mating entails for each sexual function. In the present study, we investigated the costs and benefits of multiple mating on cocoon number, cocoon mass, and cocoon hatching success in the redworm Eisenia andrei, a simultaneous hermaphrodite with reciprocal insemination, by manipulating the number of matings with different partners. We did not detect any reduction in the female reproductive output (number and mass of cocoons) with increasing number of mating partners. However, we found that multiple mating showed benefits for female reproduction that increased the hatching success of the cocoons. This effect may be a result of increased quantity and/or diversity of sperm in the spermathecae of multiple mated earthworms. Further studies are required to clarify the mechanism underlying the increased cocoon hatching success when redworms engage in multiple matings. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ?? , ??–??.  相似文献

The cranial anatomy of Dinilysia patagonica, a terrestrial snake from the Upper Cretaceous of Argentina, is redescribed and illustrated, based on high‐resolution X‐ray computed tomography and better preparations made on previously known specimens, including the holotype. Previously unreported characters reinforce the intriguing mosaic nature of the skull of Dinilysia, with a suite of plesiomorphic and apomorphic characters with respect to extant snakes. Newly recognized plesiomorphies are the absence of the medial vertical flange of the nasal, lateral position of the prefrontal, lizard‐like contact between vomer and palatine, floor of the recessus scalae tympani formed by the basioccipital, posterolateral corners of the basisphenoid strongly ventrolaterally projected, and absence of a medial parietal pillar separating the telencephalon and mesencephalon, amongst others. We also reinterpreted the structures forming the otic region of Dinilysia, confirming the presence of a crista circumfenestralis, which represents an important derived ophidian synapomorphy. Both plesiomorphic and apomorphic traits of Dinilysia are treated in detail and illustrated accordingly. Results of a phylogenetic analysis support a basal position of Dinilysia, as the sister‐taxon to all extant snakes. The fossil taxa Yurlunggur, Haasiophis, Eupodophis, Pachyrhachis, and Wonambi appear as derived snakes nested within the extant clade Alethinophidia, as stem‐taxa to the crown‐clade Macrostomata. SYNOPSIS. Purine nucleotide biosynthesis was studied in culture forms of Trypanosoma cruzi strain Y, Crithidia deanei (a reduviid trypanosomatid with an endosymbiote) and an aposymbiotic strain of C. deanei (obtained by curing C. deanei with chloramphenicol). Trypanosoma cruzi was found to synthesize purine nucleotides only from the preformed bases adenine and guanine (“salvage” pathway), adenine being incorporated into both adenine and guanine nucleotides. Similar results were obtained with guanine, indicating that this flagellate has a system for the interconversion of purine nucleotides. Crithidia deanei was able to synthesize purine and pyrimidine nucleotides from glycine (“de novo” pathway) and purine nucleotides from adenine and guanine (“salvage” pathway). Adenine was incorporated into both adenine and guanine nucleotides, while guanine was incorporated into guanine nucleotides only, indicating the presence of a metabolic block at the level of GMP reducaase. The aposymbiotic C. deanei strain was unable to utilize glycine for the synthesis of purine nucleotides, although glycine was utilized for synthesizing pyrimidine nucleotides. These results suggest that the endosymbiote is implicated in the de novo purine nucleotide pathway of the C. deanei-endosymbiote complex. The incorporation of adenine and guanine by aposymbiotic C. deanei strain followed a pattern similar to that observed for C. deanei.  相似文献
