Abstract Back transmission trials on young forest plants with isolates of purified viruses from the same tree species were performed using different inoculation techniques. Spruce seedlings and willow plants were successfully infected with tobacco necrosis virus (TNV) by the conventional method of mechanical inoculation of virus suspension mixed with celite as abrasive. Cherry leaf roll virus (CLRV) was transmitted to birches only after adding poly-L-orithine (PLO) to the inoculum. The same method was successful with brome mosaic virus (BMV) on beech seedlings. PLO also improved the rate of infection on TNV in willows. In only one case, was CLRV transmitted conventionally to a white ash seedling. The infection of white ash was increased when frozen powders, of infected ash leaves were directly rubbed onto leaves. BMV could not be transmitted to beech seedlings by carborundum pressure-inoculation. Stem slashing-inoculation of BMV and CLRV was successful with CLRV in one beech out of 60 seedlings. 相似文献

Summary The accumulation of mansonones E and F was investigated in Ulmus americana L. seedlings 5 weeks after inoculation with three aggressive and three non-aggressive isolates of Ophiostoma ulmi (Buism.) Nannf. The three non-aggressive isolates stimulated significantly more mansonone E and F accumulation than the three aggressive isolates of O. ulmi. Mansonone induction also varied within both the aggressive and the non-aggressive groups. Aggressive and non-aggressive isolates were recovered in equal frequencies from the inoculation wounds, whereas the aggressive isolates were recovered more frequently than the non-aggressive isolates 15 cm and 25 cm up the seedlings' stem. Vascular browning in the outer xylem of the seedlings correlated with mansonone E and F accumulation. Mansonone accumulation in U. americana seedlings is therefore associated with vascular browning and a reduction in fungal spread. 相似文献

Previously we have developed a microassay for anchorage independent growth (AIG) of fibroblasts in soft agar, which can detect very small quantities of transforming growth factors (TGFs). Using this assay, we have shown that small pieces of dissected chick embryo tissue will stimulate AIG of both NR6 and NRK 49f cells, and that this property can be used to map production of growth factors with transforming activity in individual early embryos. We now show that this activity can be transferred to conditioned medium (CM) prepared using chick embryo tissue. Using two cell lines with differential responsiveness to TGFs, and by coincubating normal and heat-treated CM with trypsin, Con-A and neutralising antibodies, we show that CM contains at least two different growth factors with transforming activity. One of these is heat-stable, and stimulates colony formation in NRK 49f cells in the presence of EGF, but not in its absence. This activity corresponds to a TGF beta-like molecule. The other component is a heat-labile glycoprotein, which has TGF alpha-like properties, but does not appear to behave like known TGFs with these properties. It therefore appears to be a novel growth factor. Both activities are present from the intermediate primitive streak stage of development. 相似文献

The complete nucleotide sequence of the ami locus of Streptococcus pneumoniae revealed the presence of six open reading frames, amiABCDEF. The predicted Ami proteins are probably involved in a transport system. The AmiA, C, D, E, and F proteins exhibit homology with components of the oligopeptide permeases (opp) of Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli. Intriguingly, the AmiB protein is homologous to ArsC, a cytosolic modifier subunit of the anion pump encoded by the arsenical resistance operon of the R-factor R773 from E. coli. The cytostatic effects of essential fatty acid metabolic intermediates and of some prostaglandins and leukotrienes in vitro have been extensively documented. The essential fatty acids (EFAs) exhibit no side-effects when taken as a dietary supplement, even in large doses. Primary Liver Cancer (PLC) is a fatal disease in our area as it is always multifocal in nature. In vitro studies have shown a cytostatic effect of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) on primary liver cancer cells. In a double-blind placebo controlled trial, using Evening Primrose Oil (as a source of GLA) as a dietary supplement in PLC patients, no statistically significant effect was observed on survival time or liver size. There was however a statistical significant beneficial effect on Gamma Glutamyl transferase values as a measure of liver function. No side-effects were observed. The large size of tumour and the low doses of GLA used in this trial probably explain the lack of significant effect on survival times. 相似文献

The present study was designed to determine whether the supplementation of vitamin E in the copper-deficient diet would ameliorate the severity of copper deficiency in fructose-fed rats. Lipid peroxidation was measured in the livers and hearts of rats fed a copper-deficient diet (0.6 microg Cu/g) containing 62% fructose with adequate vitamin E (0.1 g/kg diet) or supplemented with vitamin E (1.0 g/kg diet). Hepatic lipid peroxidation was significantly reduced by vitamin E supplementation compared with the unsupplemented adequate rats. In contrast, myocardial lipid peroxidation was unaffected by the level of vitamin E. Regardless of vitamin E supplementation, all copper-deficient rats exhibited severe signs of copper deficiency, and some of the vitamin E-supplemented rats died of this deficiency. These findings suggest that although vitamin E provided protection against peroxidation in the liver, it did not protect the animals against the severity of copper deficiency induced by fructose consumption. 相似文献
