Aims To produce representative aggregate maps of plant collection locations in Thailand and discuss their impact on biogeographical studies in Thailand and the surrounding region. Location Thailand. Methods A representative data set comprising 6593 plant specimen records for Thailand has been assembled. The data set contains ± all known collections for fifteen representative plant families and further records for another 104. All records are localized to Changwat (province), 6441 to at least quarter degree square. Results Analysis shows that the spread of collecting activity in Thailand is markedly uneven; 20% of collections come from a single Changwat (Chiang Mai) and 53% of Changwat have fifty or fewer collections. The distribution of collections by Changwat and by quarter degree square is erratic with most squares and Changwat having few collections, both in proportionate and absolute terms. Some of the most densely forested Changwats and squares appear undercollected. Distribution maps for common, easily recognized tree species in the genus Syzygium show distributional gaps. Conclusions Thailand is defined as an undercollected country. Even within the few well‐collected quarter degree squares the spread of collecting is still poor; almost all collections being localized to one of three mountain ranges or their foothills. There are many gaps in collecting activity which make impossible a straightforward interpretation of biogeographical pattern. It is argued that targeted collecting activity is needed, that assembly of this type of data set is therefore essential and that our data set and its interpretation is a model for all countries in the region.  相似文献

Eryngium regnellii Malme belongs to the largest genera in the Apiaceae family, with 250 species worldwide and 65 represented in South America. It is a herbaceous species typical of hill plant communities, which, along with remnant grassland patches, are the most relevant natural habitats for the maintenance of diversity in the Southern Pampas. Eryngium regnellii is key to the maintenance of pollination mutualisms, being a generalist (displaying a diverse assemblage of pollinators) and ubiquitous species (present in all studied sierras). However, fragmentation of the Pampean landscape due to agricultural intensification has led to the loss of natural environments. Therefore, the reintroduction of E. regnellii in strategic places would facilitate the occurrence of wild pollinators, while favoring pollination services in the agroecosystem. The germination requirements of E. regnellii were studied because a better knowledge of the reproductive biology of this species would provide information relevant to its reproduction and reintroduction into degraded areas. Germination percentages and mean time to germination were evaluated, using one control and two pre-germination treatments: chemical scarification with sulfuric acid, and mechanical scarification with sand paper. Chemical scarified seeds did not germinate. Mechanically scarified and control seed groups showed no significant differences either in germination percentages (49% and 59% respectively) or in mean germination time (13 and 14 days, respectively). Results indicate that E. regnellii shows no physical dormancy, and does not require specific pre-germination treatments for germination under the studied laboratory conditions. The high germination capacity of E. regnellii, along with its ecological attributes, make it a potential species for restoring plant-pollinator interactions in the fragmented landscapes of the Southern Pampas.  相似文献

In the production of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), nitrogen fertilization is one of the most costly crop practices, but important to reach high yields. However, high nitrogen (N) content in plants does not always translate into a high fibre production. One way of assessing the efficiency of the N fertilizer is through the enzymatic activity of the nitrate reductase (NR). This is a key enzyme in N assimilation, whose activity is regulated by a number of endogenous and exogenous factors that determine yield. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of N fertilization on yield, fibre quality, biomass, and NR enzymatic activity in vivo in the cotton variety Fiber Max 989. The evaluated application rates were 0, 50, 100, and 150 kg/ha of N, using urea as a source (46% N) in a randomizedblock design with three replicates. At harvest, the maximum yield of seed cotton and the greatest accumulation of total foliar biomass through time was reached after applying 150 kg N/ha. The different N-application rates did not affect the components of cotton-fibre quality. The activity of endogenous NR was greater on plants where 150 kg N/ha were applied. The highest cotton yield and N contents were obtained on these plants. Therefore, the NR activity in vivo could be used as a bioindicator of the N nutritional level in cotton.  相似文献

The exposure of perfused rat livers to depolarizing concentrations of K+ (60 mM) by partial substitution of the NaCl in the medium with KCl induces glycogenolysis, respiratory changes and vasoconstriction. These responses were found to be inhibited 70-80% by 20 microM indomethacin and by 20 microM bromophenacyl bromide. This suggests that eicosanoids, namely prostaglandins, are involved in mediating these effects, and hence that the action of K+ involves primarily an effect on eicosanoid-producing cells (Kupffer and endothelial cells) within the liver. A 5 min pre-exposure of perfused livers to depolarizing concentrations of K+ (in the presence of indomethacin) was found to inhibit (by approx. 85%) the influx of Ca2+ induced by the co-administration of 10 nM glucagon and 10 nM vasopressin. A similar result was observed in isolated hepatocytes. The inhibition was probably not due to a decrease in the concentration of Na+ in the medium since the substitution of 80 mM NaCl with 80 mM choline chloride resulted in significantly less inhibition (30-40%). These results suggest that under these conditions the influx of Ca2+ in liver occurs through a pathway that is inhibited by high K+ concentration and/or a depolarization of the plasma membrane.  相似文献

Mitochondria isolated from male Wistar rats experimentally infected with the common liver fluke, Fasciolahepatica, exhibit loss of respiratory control from 2 weeks post-infection (Rule, et al. (1989) Biochem. J. 260, 517–523). We now report that subcutaneous injections of the anti-inflammatory drug, dexamethasone, during the final week of infection prevented the mitochondrial uncoupling and restored respiratory control almost to the levels of uninfected controls. Further investigations have shown that mitochondria from infected rat livers are unable to synthesize ATP and that abnormal respiration is also evident in hepatocytes isolated from infected rats. These abnormalities were absent when infected rats were treated with dexamethasone. In addition, liver mitochondrial function in infected, congenitally athymic, nude rats (CBH/R nu/nu) was not significantly different from that in uninfected nude or Wistar controls. These results provide evidence that the mitochondrial dysfunction in fascioliasis is host-mediated and that T lymphocytes in particular may be involved.  相似文献

Cyclic stimulation by Ca(2+) of respiration in mitochondria isolated from Ehrlich ascites-tumour cells occurs only when low phosphate concentrations (approx. 0.5mm) are also included in the incubation system. Under these circumstances the extra oxygen consumed is related stoicheiometrically to the amount of Ca(2+) taken up by the mitochondria; the values are similar to those obtained with mitochondria from rat liver in the absence of added phosphate. In contrast with liver mitochondria, up to 280nmol of Ca(2+)/mg of protein can be added to ascites mitochondria without causing any deleterious effect. Respiration in mitochondria isolated from the Yoshida ascites hepatoma (HA 130) and from the Morris hepatomas 5123C and 9618A is also stimulated by Ca(2+) in a cyclic manner. However, that in mitochondria from regenerating rat liver responds to Ca(2+) in the same way as those from normal rat liver. ADP-stimulated respiration in mitochondria from Ehrlich ascites tumour cells, but not from rat liver, is inhibited by low amounts of Ca(2+).  相似文献
