The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of a compound diet as a live prey substitute for feeding European sea bass larvae ( Dicentrarchus labrax L.). The effect of a commercial diet (Nippai ML feed) and live prey ( Artemia nauplii) on tryptic enzyme activity, protein content, growth (standard length) and survival rates of sea bass larvae were tested during a 27-day rearing experiment. Sea bass larvae were divided into two groups. The live food group (control group) was fed exclusively on newly hatched Artemia nauplii (Inve AF grade), the test group was fed exclusively with the compound diet from day 15 onwards. As trypsin has been demonstrated to be a useful indicator for evaluating digestibility of food and the nutritional condition of fish larvae, individual tryptic enzyme activity was determined in both feeding groups. Larvae older than 14 days after hatching and fed on live food showed a significantly higher tryptic enzyme activity than larvae fed the compound diet. A similar relationship between tryptic activity and standard length in both test groups was detected only in small larvae (standard length < 7 mm). The usefulness of proteolytic enzyme activity measurements in larval fish research, as well as its use in aquaculture nutrition research, was confirmed. Protein content, increase in length and survival rates of the sea bass larvae were additionally determined in order to evaluate an influence on the diet. The protein content of larvae fed the Artemia nauplii was higher and the growth of larvae fed the compound diet was reduced. Larval mortality was not affected by the diet given.  相似文献

Summary Although many native species are now used in the revegetation of soil disturbances in Australian alpine areas, exotic species were, until recently, the only components of seed mixes. The use of exotic species and fertilizer was justified by their availability and low cost, and the prediction that native species would replace the exotic sward, presumably once soil nutrient levels dropped to those found in native vegetation. There was no apparent regard for the invasive capacities of the exotic species used. An investigation of a road verge on the Bogong High Plains, revegetated with a mixture of exotic species in the late 1950s, has shown that colonization by native plants can be very slow. Although many native species had colonized by 1993, exotic species still provided 50% of the cover. Agrostis capillaris accounted for most of this. The major native colonizers were Carex spp., Colobanthus affinis , Euchiton spp., Leptinella filicula , Poa hiemata , Ranunculus victoriensis and Scleranthus biflorus . Poa hiemata provided by far the most cover of the native colonizers. There have been considerable increases in the cover and number of native species on the verge since 1989. Cattle grazing and trampling are likely to have limited colonization of native plants prior to the removal of livestock in 1991. Recommendations are made on approaches to future revegetation in the alpine area.  相似文献

Summary Recent studies have recognized the potential of broad‐scale surface application of smoke compounds for enhancing germination from the soil seed‐bank in fire‐prone vegetation communities. Results suggest that smoke technology may play, in the future, a significant role in the restoration and management of areas supporting indigenous vegetation. An important step in the development of smoke‐based restoration tools is the conduct of in situ field trials in a range of geographical locations and environmental conditions. However, most of the published work on the effectiveness of smoke products in promoting seedbank germination has been conducted at sites in southwestern Australia. The present study examines the effect of commercially available smoke‐water products on the regeneration of a highly disturbed former mine‐site at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne, in southeastern Victoria. Various combinations of concentrated smoke products and topsoil harvested from a nearby heathy woodland community were applied to exposed, uniform mineral sands to test their effect on seedling density and species richness of regrowth. The trials showed that after 12 months a number of common, herbaceous species including Austrodanthonia setacea, Opercularia varia and Platysace heterophylla were recorded in significantly higher numbers in areas treated with a commercial smoke‐water. However, there was no overall improvement in the density of seedlings or the richness of species as a result of the application of the smoke products. Similarly, total seedling density and species richness were not affected by the addition of topsoil, either alone or in combination with smoke products.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships were estimated for 20 species of the Jurumirim reservoir (southern Brazil): one Pimelodidae, one Callichthyidae, six Characidae, one Prochilodontidae, six Anastomidae, one Erythrinidae, two Curimatidae, one Paradontidae and one Cichlidae. The fishes were collected during 2001–2002 using three different types of fishing gear that allowed collection of both adult and juvenile specimens. The present study assessed condition of pouting ( Trisopterus luscus Linnaeus, 1758) in nursery areas and other coastal areas along the Portuguese coast using different indices. Condition factor Fulton's K, RNA : DNA ratio and total protein content were determined for 0-group pouting collected in three shallow nursery grounds. Adult pouting were sampled in 10 sites along the coast and Fulton's K, hepatosomatic index (HSI), total protein content and water content were determined as indicators of condition. For 0-group individuals, only total protein content showed significant differences among the sites, whereas in adults all the indices evaluated differed significantly among the sites. However, due to high RNA : DNA ratios it was considered that all investigated nursery areas provided suitable conditions for survival and rapid growth of early stages of T. luscus . Adult pouting were also considered to be in good physical and nutritional condition along the Portuguese coast, although better growth conditions seem to be provided in the warmer waters of southern Portugal, evidencing a latitudinal trend.  相似文献

The genetic population structure of Mediterranean horse mackerel, Trachurus mediterraneus , from seven locations throughout the Black, Marmara, Aegean and eastern Mediterranean seas was investigated using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the mtDNA 16S rDNA region. An approximately 2000-bp segment was screened in 280 individuals using six restriction enzymes, resulting in 10 composite haplotypes. The most common haplotype was present in 56.42% individuals; the next most frequent haplotype was present in 22.85% individuals. Average haplotype diversity within samples was moderate (0.38), and nucleotide diversity was low (0.00435). Mean nucleotide divergence for the seven sampling sites was 0.0028. Nucleotide divergence among samples was moderate, with the highest value detected between the Aegean Sea (Izmir) and the eastern Black Sea (Trabzon) populations (0.007055), and the lowest (−0.000043) between the Marmara Sea (Adalar) and the western Black Sea (Sile) populations. In Monte Carlo pairwise comparisons of haplotype frequencies, the Sinop from the middle Black Sea, Trabzon from the eastern Black Sea, and Iskenderun Bay from the north-eastern Mediterranean Sea exhibited highly significant (P   <   0.001) geographical differentiation from each other and from all other populations. Mantel's test indicated that the nucleotide divergence among populations of T. mediterraneus was not significantly associated with their geographical isolation ( r  = −0.2963; P   >   0.05). Consequently, the mtDNA 16S rDNA region provided evidence for the existence of three distinct T. mediterraneus populations (Sinop, Trabzon and Iskenderun Bay) in the Black and north-eastern Mediterranean seas.  相似文献

Retention and mortality associated with visible implant elastomer (VIE) and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tagged juvenile chub [ Leuciscus cephalus (L.)], dace [ Leuciscus leuciscus (L.)] and roach [ Rutilus rutilus (L.)] were evaluated. PIT tag retention (96.6–100%) was higher than VIE over the 6-month duration of the experiment. VIE retention was significantly better in the head (96.3–98.8%) than in the fins (78.8–90.9%) the first month after tagging, but the opposite was found after 6 months (head = 21.5–57.5%; fins = 77.2–88.8%). Survival was not significantly different from controls for any treatment, except dace tagged with 23-mm PIT (significantly influenced by mass of fish at tagging) and sham PIT tagged dace, because of initial losses. PIT tags are recommended as the most suitable method for tagging individual juvenile chub, dace and roach based on high retention and survival. VIE implantation in the head (studies < 30 days) and fins (studies > 30 days) could provide a cheap, batch-marking alternative, provided retention rates are monitored.  相似文献

The fat content and fillet yield of common carp ( Cyprinus carpio ) from three carp farms were investigated with respect to pond management and overall climatic conditions. The mean fat content of the trimmed fillet varied from 2.7 to 6.9% and differed significantly among the three facilities (P < 0.001). It is suggested that differences in the fillet fat content may be based on the climatic conditions as well as the different management strategies (feeding, stocking biomass). The mean fillet yield was calculated as 34.0–39.0%. No significant correlation between fish weight and fillet yield (ρ = −0.16) was found. Results suggest that producing smaller fish for fillets of serving size may lead to a higher production and conclude with lower production risks and costs.  相似文献
