The effects of owl predation on the foraging behavior of heteromyid rodents   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14  
Summary Researchers have documented microhabitat partitioning among the heteromyid rodents of the deserts of North America that may result from microhabitat specific predation rates; large/bipedal species predominate in the open/risky microhabitat and small/quadrupedal species predominate in the bush/safer microhabitat. Here, we provide direct experimental evidence on the role of predatory risk in affecting the foraging behavior of three species of heteromyid rodents: Arizona pocket mouse (Perognathus amplus; small/quadrupedal), Bailey's pocket mouse (P. baileyi; large/quadrupedal), and Merriam's kangaroo rat (Dipodomys merriami; large/bipedal). Both kangaroo rats and pocket mice are behaviorally flexible and able to adjust their foraging behavior to nightly changes in predatory risk. Under low levels of perceived predatory risk the kangaroo rat foraged relatively more in the open microhabitat than the two pocket mouse species. In response to the presence of barn owls, however, all three species shifted their habitat use towards the bush microhabitat. In response to direct measures of predatory risk, i.e. the actual presence of owls, all three species reduced foraging and left resource patches at higher giving up densities of seeds. In response to indirect indicators of predatory risk, i.e. illumination, there was a tendency for all three species to reduce foraging. The differences in morphology between pocket mice and kangaroo rats do appear to influence their behavioral responses to predatory risk.  相似文献

Although much is now known about the mechanisms that insects, birds and mammals use to orient within familiar areas, our knowledge of such mechanisms in fish is scant. I used the transformational approach to test whether the blind Mexican cave fish can encode shape and size in an internal representation of space. These fish are excellent study animals, as they swim at high velocities (presumably to enhance lateral line organ stimulation) when faced with unfamiliar landmarks or environments. As they are blind, potentially confounding cues from visual global landmarks are unavailable. The fish learnt a square configuration of four landmarks and so must have been be able to encode spatial relationships between the elements within this configuration. After learning landmark arrays, the cave fish showed significant dishabituation (swimming velocity was increased) when exposed to landmark transformations. The fish must therefore have been comparing the environment that they perceived with an internal representation of the environment that they had learnt. The results show that blind Mexican cave fish can encode size (absolute distance between landmarks) and possibly also shape within their spatial maps.  相似文献

Synthetic gene drive constructs could, in principle, provide the basis for highly efficient interventions to control disease vectors and other pest species. This efficiency derives in part from leveraging natural processes of dispersal and gene flow to spread the construct and its impacts from one population to another. However, sometimes (for example, with invasive species) only specific populations are in need of control, and impacts on non-target populations would be undesirable. Many gene drive designs use nucleases that recognise and cleave specific genomic sequences, and one way to restrict their spread would be to exploit sequence differences between target and non-target populations. In this paper we propose and model a series of low threshold double drive designs for population suppression, each consisting of two constructs, one imposing a reproductive load on the population and the other inserted into a differentiated locus and controlling the drive of the first. Simple deterministic, discrete-generation computer simulations are used to assess the alternative designs. We find that the simplest double drive designs are significantly more robust to pre-existing cleavage resistance at the differentiated locus than single drive designs, and that more complex designs incorporating sex ratio distortion can be more efficient still, even allowing for successful control when the differentiated locus is neutral and there is up to 50% pre-existing resistance in the target population. Similar designs can also be used for population replacement, with similar benefits. A population genomic analysis of CRISPR PAM sites in island and mainland populations of the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae indicates that the differentiation needed for our methods to work can exist in nature. Double drives should be considered when efficient but localised population genetic control is needed and there is some genetic differentiation between target and non-target populations.  相似文献

It is found that neurotropic drugs, whose molecules have positively-charged amino groups and a considerable hydrophobic region (in size), can be incorporated into the phospholipid bilayers. This results in a decrease of the lifetime of Pr3+ cations in the membrane-associated state. No correlation was found to exist between local anaesthesia activity of the study drugs and its capability of displacement polyvalent cations from the membrane surface.  相似文献

Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) immunoreactivity occurs in high concentration within the rat prostate. Previous studies have shown that the immunoreactive species consists of more than one TRH-like tripeptide which cross-reacts in the TRH radioimmunoassay. The component which was highly retained during cation exchange chromatography was subjected to a preparative scale isolation, purification and structural analysis. The methods used included methanol extraction, waterethyl ether partitioning, cation exchange chromatography, affinity chromatography, high pressure liquid chromatography, TRH radioimmunoassay, in vitro pituitary bioassay, TRH receptor assay, and amino acid analysis. The mean concentration of the predominant amino acids (Glu, His, Pro), 344 pmoles/ml, and the TRH concentration measured by TRH radioimmunoassay prior to acid hydrolysis, 372 pmoles/ml, were nearly identical. Because the material analyzed cochromatographed with synthetic TRH in several chromatographic systems, had a radioreceptor potency which was indistinguishable from that for synthetic TRH, and released TSH and prolactin but not growth hormone from rat pituitaries in vitro, it is concluded that pGlu-His-Pro-NH2 is one of the TRH-like peptides in the rat vental prostate.  相似文献

The contractile behavior and surface morphology of cultured neonatal rat heart cells were examined by phase contrast and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) following laser irradiation of single mitochondria. Irradiation always resulted in damage to the target mitochondrion (as determined by phase microscopy) and was associated with one of three contractile states, each of which correlated with a specific surface morphology over the irradiated mitochondrion. The results demonstrate that: (1) changes in the contractile activity of the cell correlate directly with morphological changes in the target organelle and in the membrane overlying the target organelle; (2) when the contractile activity of the cell remains unchanged, the morphology of the membrane overlying the target organelle appears normal via SEM even though the organelle is visibly damaged as judged by phase contrast microscopy; (3) the correlation between contractile behavior and surface morphology was the same regardless of which cell surface the laser beam passed through when entering the cell (i.e., through the cell surface directly apposed to the glass or through the free cell surface directly exposed to the medium); (4) the mitochondrial lesions could be compared to lesions made in dried red blood cells irradiated from either surface. (Again the lesions appeared identical regardless of the cell surface through which the laser beam entered.) These observations suggest that laser damage is produced equally in all directions from the focal point.  相似文献
