Variation in human male testosterone levels may reflect, and effect, differential behavioral allocation to mating and parenting effort. This proposition leads to the hypothesis that, among North American men, those involved in committed, romantic relationships will have lower testosterone levels than men not involved in such relationships. Our study is the first to examine whether being in such a relationship (rather than being married) is the meaningful predictor of male testosterone levels. To test this hypothesis, 122 male Harvard Business School students filled out a questionnaire and collected one saliva sample (from which testosterone level was measured). Results revealed that men in committed, romantic relationships had 21% lower testosterone levels than men not involved in such relationships. Furthermore, the testosterone levels of married men and unmarried men who were involved in committed, romantic relationships did not differ, suggesting that, at least for this sample, male pair bonding status is the more significant predictor of testosterone levels than is marital status.  相似文献

A recent increase in published studies of lianas has been paralleled by a proliferation of protocols for censusing lianas. This article seeks to increase uniformity in liana inventories by providing specific recommendations for the determination of which taxa to include, the location of diameter measurement points on individual stems, the setting of minimum stem diameter cutoffs, the treatment of multiple‐stemmed and rooted clonal groups, and the measurement of noncylindrical stems. Use of more uniform liana censusing protocols may facilitate comparison of independently collected data sets and further our understanding of global patterns in liana abundance, diversity, biomass, and dynamics.  相似文献

We examined the effects of changes caused by the blocking of protein and RNA synthesis on neurite outgrowth from neurons of the central nervous system (CNS) in primary culture. Exposure to cycloheximide and actinomycin-D led to dramatic increases in the length of neurites in cultures of neurons from various rat or chick CNS regions. Inhibitor-induced neurite outgrowth was observed (1) from dopaminergic neurons in mixed cultures of the rat substantia nigra or (2) in pure cultures of rat and chick neurons grown on a polyornithine/laminin substratum. These results suggest that neurite outgrowth from CNS neurons is kept restricted, at least in culture, by the continuous production of a labile neurite-inhibiting protein intrinsic to the neurons, which rapidly decays following inhibition of protein or RNA synthesis. 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

One Falco rusticolus and two of 24 Falco peregrinus were positive for Plasmodium relictum. Sixteen percent of the erythrocytes (RBC) of the gyrfalcon were parasitized. Following treatment with chloroquine the parasite burden was dramatically reduced (to less than 0.01%). Infection in peregrine falcons was low (0.01-0.4% RBCs were parasitized). This is the second report of Plasmodium in the gyrfalcon and the first report in the peregrine falcon.  相似文献

The absorbance change of the weak base dye probe, Acridine orange, was used to monitor alterations of pH gradients across renal brush border membrane vesicles. The presence of Na+/H+ or Li+/H+ exchange was demonstrated by diluting Na2SO4 or Li2SO4 loaded vesicles into Na+- or Li+-free solutions, which caused dye uptake. About 20% of the uptake was abolished by lipid permeable cations such as valinomycin-K+ or tetraphenylphosphonium, indicating perhaps the presence of a finite Na+ conductance smaller than electroneutral Na+/H+ exchange. The protonophore tetrachlorosalicylanilide raised the rate of dye uptake under these conditions, hence the presence of an Na+ conductance greater than the H+ conductance was suggested. K+ gradients also induced changes of pH, at about 10% of the Na+ or Li+ rate. Partial inhibition (21%) was seen with 0.1 mM amiloride indicating that K+ was a low affinity substrate for the Na+/H+ exchange. Acceleration both by tetrachlorosalicylanilide (2-fold) and valinomycin (4-fold) suggested the presence of 2 classes of vesicles, those with high and those with low K+ conductance. The larger magnitude of the valinomycin dependent signal suggested that 75% of the vesicles had a low K+ conductance. Inward Cl? gradients also induced acidification, partially inhibited by the presence of tetraphenylphosphonium, and accelerated by tetrachlorosalicylanilide. Thus both a Cl? conductance greater than the H+ conductance and a Cl?/OH? exchange were present. The rate of Na+/H+ exchange was amiloride sensitive with a pH optimum of 6.5 and an apparent Km for Na+ or Li+ of about 10 mM and an EA of 14.3 kcal per mol. A 61-fold Na2SO4 gradient resulted in a pH gradient of 1.64 units which increased to 1.8 with gramicidin. An equivalent NaCl gradient gave a much lower ΔpH even in the presence of gramicidin showing that the H+ and Cl? pathways could alter the effects of the Na+/H+ exchange.  相似文献

Efforts to define serological correlates of protection against COVID-19 have been hampered by the lack of a simple, scalable, standardised assay for SARS-CoV-2 infection and antibody neutralisation. Plaque assays remain the gold standard, but are impractical for high-throughput screening. In this study, we show that expression of viral proteases may be used to quantitate infected cells. Our assays exploit the cleavage of specific oligopeptide linkers, leading to the activation of cell-based optical biosensors. First, we characterise these biosensors using recombinant SARS-CoV-2 proteases. Next, we confirm their ability to detect viral protease expression during replication of authentic virus. Finally, we generate reporter cells stably expressing an optimised luciferase-based biosensor, enabling viral infection to be measured within 24 h in a 96- or 384-well plate format, including variants of concern. We have therefore developed a luminescent SARS-CoV-2 reporter cell line, and demonstrated its utility for the relative quantitation of infectious virus and titration of neutralising antibodies.  相似文献

Extant neotropical rainforest biomes are characterized by a high diversity and abundance of angiosperm trees and vines, high proportions of entire-margined leaves, high proportions of large leaves (larger than 4500 mm2), high abundance of drip tips and a suite of characteristic dominant families: Sapotaceae, Lauraceae, Leguminosae (Fabaceae), Melastomataceae and Palmae (Arecaceae). Our aim is to define parameters of extant rainforests that will allow their recognition in the fossil record of South America and to evaluate all known South American plant fossil assemblages for first evidence and continued presence of those parameters. We ask when did these critical rainforest characters arise? When did vegetative parameters reach the level of abundance that we see in neotropical forests? Also, when do specific lineages become common in neotropical forests? Our review indicates that evidence of neotropical rainforest is exceedingly rare and equivocal before the Palaeocene. Even in the Palaeocene, the only evidence for tropical rainforest in South America is the appearance of moderately high pollen diversity. By contrast, North American sites provide evidence that rainforest leaf physiognomy was established early in the Palaeocene. By the Eocene in South America, several lines of evidence suggest that neotropical rainforests were diverse, physiognomically recognizable as rainforest and taxonomically allied to modern neotropical rainforests. A mismatch of evidence regarding the age of origin between sites of palaeobotanical high diversity and sites of predicted tropical climates should be reconciled with intensified collecting efforts in South America. We identify several lines of promising research that will help to coalesce previously disparate approaches to the origin, longevity and maintenance of high diversity floras of South America.  相似文献

Previous research in North America has supported the view that male involvement in committed, romantic relationships is associated with lower testosterone (T) levels. Here, we test the prediction that undergraduate men involved in committed, romantic relationships (paired) will have lower T levels than men not involved in such relationships (unpaired). Further, we also test whether these differences are more apparent in samples collected later, rather than earlier, in the day. For this study, 107 undergraduate men filled out a questionnaire and collected one saliva sample (from which a subject’s T level was measured) at various times across the day. As in previous studies, men involved in committed, romantic relationships had lower salivary T levels, though only during later times of the day. Furthermore, additional analysis of the variation among unpaired subjects indicated that men without prior relationship experience had lower T levels than experienced men. Finally, while paired men as a group had lower T levels than unpaired men, those men at the earliest stage (less than six months) of a current relationship had higher T levels than unpaired men as well as men in longer-term relationships. These results suggest that variation in male testosterone levels may reflect differential behavioral allocation to mating effort. Matthew McIntyre studies the role of testosterone in psychological development. Terry Burnham is an economist at the Harvard Business School. He studies economic behavior in a framework based in evolution by natural selection. Susan Lipson is a Lecturer in Anthropology and director of the Reproductive Ecology Laboratory at Harvard University. Her research includes work on the effects of age and energy balance on female reproductive function, and on hormonal correlates of conception and cancer risk. Peter Ellison is John Cowles Professor of Anthropology and Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. Sequence variation in a 216 bp portion of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) II B1 domain was examined in 74 individual lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) from different locations in Lake Superior. Forty-three alleles were obtained which encoded 71-72 amino acids of the mature protein. These sequences were compared with previous data obtained from five Pacific salmon species and Atlantic salmon using the same primers. Although all of the lake trout alleles clustered together in the neighbor-joining analysis of amino acid sequences, one amino acid allelic lineage was shared with Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), a species in another genus which probably diverged from Salvelinus more than 10-20 million years ago. As shown previously in other salmonids, the level of nonsynonymous nucleotide substitution (dN) exceeded the level of synonymous substitution (dS). The level of nucleotide diversity at the MHC class II B1 locus was considerably higher in lake trout than in the Pacific salmon (genus Oncorhynchus). These results are consistent with the hypothesis that lake trout colonized Lake Superior from more than one refuge following the Wisconsin glaciation. Recent population bottlenecks may have reduced nucleotide diversity in Pacific salmon populations.  相似文献

Secretion is dependent on a rise in cytosolic Ca(2+)concentration and is associated with dramatic changes in actin organization. The actin cortex may act as a barrier between secretory vesicles and plasma membrane. Thus, disassembly of this cortex should precede late steps of exocytosis. Here we investigate regulation of both the actin cytoskeleton and secretion by calmodulin. Ca(2+), together with ATP, induces cortical F-actin disassembly in permeabilized rat peritoneal mast cells. This effect is strongly inhibited by removing endogenous calmodulin (using calmodulin inhibitory peptides), and increased by exogenous calmodulin. Neither treatment, however, affects secretion. Low concentrations ( approximately 1 microM) of a specific inhibitor of myosin light chain kinase, ML-7, prevent F-actin disassembly, but not secretion. In contrast, a myosin inhibitor affecting both conventional and unconventional myosins, BDM, decreases cortical disassembly as well as secretion. Observations of fluorescein-calmodulin, introduced into permeabilized cells, confirmed a strong (Ca(2+)-independent) association of calmodulin with the actin cortex. In addition, fluorescein-calmodulin enters the nuclei in a Ca(2+)-dependent manner. In conclusion, calmodulin promotes myosin II-based contraction of the membrane cytoskeleton, which is a prerequisite for its disassembly. The late steps of exocytosis, however, require neither calmodulin nor cortical F-actin disassembly, but may be modulated by unconventional myosin(s).  相似文献
