The purpose of this study was to compare the reliability of trunk muscle activity measured by means of surface electromyography (EMG) during maximal and sub-maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVC/sub-MVC) over repeated trials within-day and between-days in healthy controls and patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Eleven volunteers (six controls and five CLBP patients) were assessed twice with a 1-week interval. Surface EMG signals were recorded bilaterally from six trunk muscles. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) and standard error of measurement as a percentage of the grand mean (%SEM) were calculated. MVC and sub-MVC showed excellent within-day reliability in both healthy controls and CLBP patients (ICC mean 0.91; range 0.75-0.98; %SEM mean 4%; range 1-12%). Sub-MVC for both groups between-days showed excellent reliability (ICC mean 0.88; range 0.78-0.97; %SEM mean 7%; range 3-11%). The between-days MVC for both groups showed trends towards lower levels of reliability (ICC mean 0.70; range 0.19-0.99; %SEM mean 17%; range 4-36%) when compared to sub-MVC. Findings of the study provide evidence that sub-MVC are preferable for amplitude normalisation when assessing EMG signals of trunk muscles between-days. 相似文献

Adrenomedullin (ADM), a potent natriuretic and vasorelaxing peptide with inotropic properties, is elevated in plasma in human and experimental congestive heart failure (CHF). Recent studies suggest that angiotensin II stimulates ADM production and secretion from cardiac myocytes and fibroblasts. In the present study, we investigated cardiac ADM in experimental CHF, and tested the hypothesis that angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition modulates cardiac ADM in CHF. Cardiac tissue ADM immunoreactivity and gene expression were assessed by radioimmunoassay, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and Northern blot analysis in normal and CHF dogs in the presence and absence of ACE inhibition. Experimental CHF was produced by progressive rapid ventricular pacing and characterized by increased ventricular ADM concentrations as well as increased ventricular ADM gene expression. ACE inhibition abolished the increases in ventricular ADM concentrations and ventricular ADM gene expression in CHF. Ventricular ADM gene expression was localized to ventricular myocytes and correlated with left ventricular mass index, suggesting that ventricular ADM is a marker for ventricular hypertrophy. In contrast, atrial ADM concentrations and gene expression did not change in CHF with or without ACE inhibition. Increased plasma ADM concentrations in CHF were also abolished with ACE inhibition. The present study demonstrates that circulating and ventricular ADM are activated in pacing-induced experimental CHF and that ACE inhibition reverses ventricular ADM activation in CHF. Direct measurements of submarine groundwaterdischarge (SGD) were taken by three different(continuous heat, heat pulse, and ultrasonic)types of automated seepage meters as well asstandard Lee-type manually operated meters. SGD flux comparisons and the spatial andtemporal variations in groundwater flow wereanalyzed. Seepage rates measured by thedifferent meters agree relatively well witheach other (more than 80% agreement). Comparisons of flux rates as a function ofdistance offshore using exponentialapproximations show that more than fivemeasurement locations (200 m offshore) areneeded for a precise integrated estimation ofSGD offshore within an accuracy of ±10%. Thedominant period of seepage variations isestimated to be about 12 hours, which closelymatches the semidiurnal tides in this area. Our analysis also shows that short durationmeasurement periods may cause significantunderestimates or overestimates of the dailyaveraged groundwater flow rates (±25%–±60% difference when the measurement durationis less than 12 hours). Thus, continuousmeasurements of SGD using automated seepagemeters with high time resolution should enableus to evaluate temporal and spatial variationsof dissolved material transports viagroundwater pathways. Multispecies cicada communities in neotropical rainforests produce a complex and intense acoustic environment. In a fragment of a Mexican rainforest (Veracruz, Mexico), a cicada community at the end of the dry season consisted of nine species ( Daza montezuma; Pacarina schumanni; Miranha imbellis; Dorisiana sutori; Fidicinoides picea; Fidicinoides pronoe; Quesada gigas; one species of the genus Neocicada and one uncaught canopy species). Seven of the nine species formed dense choruses at dawn and at dusk. Each species showed preferences in the height of calling sites. Males of the species were solitary or gregarious, and followed a 'call-fly' or a 'call-stay' calling strategy. Acoustic signals of each species had particular time and frequency patterns. All these specific features appear to separate the nine species acoustically and lead to a partitioning of the acoustic environment.
