Prey seldom rely on a single type of antipredator defence, often using multiple defences to avoid predation. In many cases, selection in different contexts may favour the evolution of multiple defences in a prey. However, a prey may use multiple defences to protect itself during a single predator encounter. Such “defence portfolios” that defend prey against a single instance of predation are distributed across and within successive stages of the predation sequence (encounter, detection, identification, approach (attack), subjugation and consumption). We contend that at present, our understanding of defence portfolio evolution is incomplete, and seen from the fragmentary perspective of specific sensory systems (e.g., visual) or specific types of defences (especially aposematism). In this review, we aim to build a comprehensive framework for conceptualizing the evolution of multiple prey defences, beginning with hypotheses for the evolution of multiple defences in general, and defence portfolios in particular. We then examine idealized models of resource trade-offs and functional interactions between traits, along with evidence supporting them. We find that defence portfolios are constrained by resource allocation to other aspects of life history, as well as functional incompatibilities between different defences. We also find that selection is likely to favour combinations of defences that have synergistic effects on predator behaviour and prey survival. Next, we examine specific aspects of prey ecology, genetics and development, and predator cognition that modify the predictions of current hypotheses or introduce competing hypotheses. We outline schema for gathering data on the distribution of prey defences across species and geography, determining how multiple defences are produced, and testing the proximate mechanisms by which multiple prey defences impact predator behaviour. Adopting these approaches will strengthen our understanding of multiple defensive strategies.  相似文献

Summary Gene transfer into intact cells was achieved by electroporating zygotic wheat embryos without any special pretreatment. Electroporation was tissue specific in so far as scutellum cells were found to be much more susceptible to gene transfer than other cell types of the embryo. The orientation of the embryos in the electroporation chamber also influenced the number of transformed scutellum cells; during electroporation, as in electrophoresis, the negatively charged plasmid DNA molecules seemed to move towards the positive electrode. Therefore, the embryos were arranged so that the scutella faced the negative electrode. The use of plasmids carrying either two chimeric anthocyanin regulatory genes or a chimeric gusA gene allowed clear identification of transformed cells in the scutellum. On some of the embryos, more than 100 transformed scutellum cells were found after electroporation with single electric pulses of 275 V/cm discharged from a 960-F capacitor and with 100 g DNA/ml electroporation buffer. Aims

Shallow soils on acidic bedrock in dry areas of Central Europe support dry grasslands and heathlands that were formerly used as extensive pastures. These habitats are of high conservation value, but their abandonment in the 20th century triggered slow natural succession that poses a threat to specialized plant species. We asked how this vegetation and its plant diversity have changed over the past three decades and whether protected areas have positively affected habitat quality.

Location

Southwestern and central Moravia, Czech Republic.

Methods

In 2018–2019, we resurveyed 94 vegetation plots first sampled in 1986–1991 at 47 acidic dry grassland and heathland sites. We compared the number of all vascular plant species, Red List species and alien species per plot using parametric and non-parametric tests, life-form spectra using the chi-square test, species composition using detrended correspondence analysis, and indicator values using a permutation test. We also compared these changes between sites within and outside protected areas.

Results

Vegetation changes over the past three decades have been relatively small. However, we detected a decrease in total species richness, the number of Red List species and the number of characteristic species of dry grasslands. Neophytes were infrequent, while archaeophytes increased slightly. The competitive tall grass Arrhenatherum elatius, annual species and young woody plants increased in abundance or newly established at many sites. Indicator values did not change except for a slight increase in nutrient values. These negative trends occurred both within and outside protected areas but were more pronounced outside.

Conclusions

Formerly grazed acidic dry grasslands and heathlands in Moravia are slowly losing habitat specialists, including threatened plant species, and are increasingly dominated by Arrhenatherum elatius. Conservation management, especially cutting in protected areas, slows down the negative trends of decline in plant diversity and habitat quality but is insufficient to halt these processes completely.  相似文献

The past few years have seen an explosion in the number of molecular motors reported in the literature. By us the energy of hydrolysis, these motors move various organelles along cytoskeletal 'tracks' within the cell. It is thought that some of the specificity of movement resides in receptors on the surface of the cargo organelles, but, in general, little is known about these molecules. In this article, Janis Burkhardt discusses the evidence that the protein kinectin serves as a membrane receptor for kinesin, and describes how motor-receptor proteins may interact with other components of the motility machinery to generate regulated movement of membrane organelles.  相似文献

Coated membranes and vesicles play an important role in receptor-mediated endocytosis and intracellular trafficking in various cell types, and are also present in blood platelets. Platelets take up certain proteins from the blood plasma, such as von Willebrand factor and fibrinogen, and these substances are transferred to storage granules. The receptors for these plasma proteins on the platelet plasma membrane have been well characterized, but morphological evidence for their transport to the storage granules is not yet available. In an attempt to clarify this aspect, we employed postembedding immunocytochemistry on platelets embedded in the acrylic resin LR White. Clathrin as the major coat component of coated vesicles was localized in the cytoplasm, on the plasmic faces of -granules and the open canalicular system, and on the plasmic face of the plasma membrane. Colocalizations of the adhesive proteins, von Willebrand factor, fibrinogen and fibronectin, with clathrin could be observed at the same typical locations as coated vesicles were seen in Araldite-embedded material. These colocalizations have not been reported to date and furnish further evidence for a coated vesicle-mediated transport of blood plasma-derived adhesive proteins from their receptors on the outer plasma membrane to the -granules.  相似文献

An auxotrophic strain ofEscherichia coli with therecB recC sbcB genotype was transformed by chromosomal DNA of the prototrophic strain and by plasmid DNA carrying genes for antibiotic resistance (R1drd 19). The donor plasmid DNA obtained by cell lysis in the presence of Triton X-100 and subsequent centrifugation in a caesium chloride-ethidium bromide gradient was shown to have a circulaf molecule and to retain its completeness after penetration into the recipient. Experiments with mixtures or plasmid and chromosomal DNA indicate a competition between these two DNA types during the transformation reaction in the given system.  相似文献

Summary Investigations on the effects of pH, temperature, type and concentration of respiration substrates and oxygen tension on the reduction rate of derivatives of 1-phenylazo-2-naphthol and of a variety of textile dyes served as a basis for establishing a bioassay for strictly reproducible measurements of the microbial reduction rate of azo dyes. Standard organism was a strain of Bacillus cereus isolated from soil. Dye reduction occurred with the standard organism and other facultatively or obligatory aerobic bacteria in exclusively anoxic conditions. In principle, first order kinetics of decolorization were found. Reduction products may however inhibit the reaction. All dyes not measurably reduced by living cells of B. cereus were decolorized by cell extracts of the same species. Dyes adsorbed by the cell walls were in most cases reduced at slow rates and did not influence the simultaneous reduction of non-adsorbable dyes in the medium. The observations confirm the hypothesis advanced by Gingell and Walker (1971) of an intracellular, non-enzymatic reduction of azo compounds by reduced flavin nucleotides. The rate of permeation of the dyes through the cell membrane is the primordial ratelimiting step in the microbial decolorization of azo dyes. Sulfonic acid substitution seems to be an effective inhibitor of permeation.  相似文献
