This essay provides a brief overview of neuronal plasticity in adult invertebrate nervous systems. Our discussion focuses on the factors which influence sprouting by adult neurons, i.e., (1) the nature of the neuron itself, (2) axon integrity, (3) the presence of targets, (4) diffusible factors, and (5) ageing. Evidence that the neurites of some adult neurons exhibit a dynamic equilibrium of expansion and retraction is presented, a topic which prompted us to speculate on the significance of such plasticity in altered behavioral states. We conclude with some suggestions as to specific questions that need to be addressed by future studies in this challenging area.  相似文献

GABA was tested for its effects on patterned motor activity (PMA) underlying feeding. Using buccal motoneuron B19 to monitor PMA through intracellular recordings, GABA was found to exert effects at two levels. First, GABA stimulated rhythmic patterned activity resembling fictive feeding, which is under the control of the buccal CPG. In addition, GABA produced a direct inhibition of neuron B19. Both effects were observed when the buccal ganglia were studied in isolation from the rest of the central nervous system, suggesting local interactions with GABA receptors of buccal neurons. Furthermore, these two actions of GABA were found to be pharmacologically distinguishable. The direct hyperpolarization of neuron B19 was mimicked by muscimol, but not baclofen, and involved an increased chloride conductance, which was blocked by picrotoxin.Baclofen duplicated CPG activation by GABA. Picrotoxin had no effect on GABA- or baclofen-induced PMA.These results demonstrate that the Helisoma buccal ganglia have two GABA receptor types which resemble, pharmacologically, mammalian GABAA and GABAB receptors, and that GABA plays a key role in feeding patterned motor activity in Helisoma.Abbreviations CPG central pattern generator - GABA gammaamino butyric acid - HPLC high performance liquid chromatography - IPSP inhibitory postsynaptic potential - PMA patterned motor activity - SLRT supralateral radular tensor muscle  相似文献

The ability of two electrical synapses (neuron L4-R4 and neuron L19-R19) to regenerate in the adult Helisoma nervous system was examined. The L4-R4 electrical connection exhibited rapid restoration to 50% of normal strength, whereas L19-R19 reconnection was weak or absent. This disparity is attributable to the inability of neuron 19 to sprout effectively across a crush site in the buccal commissure, although peripheral sprouting was pronounced. The factors which underlie the inability of neuron 19 (but not neuron 4) to sprout into a central environment are unknown, but dictate differential synapse restoration in this adult nervous system.  相似文献

Background

Fabry patients have symptoms and signs compatible with autonomic dysfunction. These symptoms and signs are considered to be due to impairment of the peripheral nervous system, but findings indicative of autonomic neuropathy in other diseases, such as orthostatic intolerance and male sexual dysfunction, are infrequently reported in Fabry disease. The aim of our study was to investigate autonomic symptoms and cardiovascular autonomic function in a large cohort of male and female Fabry patients.  相似文献
