The effects of anisomycin (ANM) on newborn chicks have been studied with respect to brain protein synthesis, growth, EEG, toxicity, and several passive avoidance learning tasks. It was found that intracerebral ANM (80 nmol) gave a maximum inhibition of brain protein synthesis of 30%, while a combination of subcutaneous (10 mumol; 53 mg/kg) plus intracerebral (80 nmol; 21 mug) ANM inhibited by 91% in the first 2 hr and by 75% in the subsequent 2 hr period. Cycloheximide (CXM) also in combined injections at the same doses as ANM, inhibited by 97% in the 4 hr that followed injection. However, all the CXM-injected chicks were dead by 18 hr, while the lethality of ANM did not differ from that of saline. ANM also did not affect EEG measured at 1, 3, 5, or 24 hr following the subcutaneous plus intracerebral injections, nor did ANM affect body or brain growth curves or brain protein accretion. In the learning experiments, animals were initially trained to peck at water-coated metal spheres (type A learning) or at water imbibed birdseed (types B and C learning) in less than 1 sec, and were exposed to the same lures treated with the aversant methylanthranilate (MeA) one day later on one occasion (types A and B learning) or exposed twice (type C learning) and tested for learning retention one day later. Learning criterion was set as failure to peck at the lure during the first 20 sec of presentation. If ANM was injected 1 hr prior to MeA exposure, large and highly significant memory deficits were found during the retention test, as compared with saline injected controls. No effect of ANM was seen, however, if it was injected one day after learning, indicating that it did not interfere with retrieval mechanisms. ANM also decreased the external manifestations of fear or displeasure that chicks express during retention testing. Such manifestations have a high correlation with pecking suppression (r = 0.88, P less than 0.001).  相似文献

The question that the title of this lecture poses must depend considerably on the attitude of physicians and surgeons. I have indicated the very low position diagnostic radiology holds in this country relative to our peers in medicine elsewhere.If its improvement is considered to be warranted, we must:(1) Interest medical students at the beginning of their career.(2) Bear in mind that radiologists are likely to be able to teach some anatomy but the reciprocal seldom applies.(3) Obtain chairs in radiology, which are desperately needed.(4) Obtain the acceptance by the medical establishment of the proper place of radiology in clinical medicine.(5) See to the reduction in numbers of unnecessary x-ray examinations.(6) Press for the improvement and enlargement of radiological departments with proper provision for expansion.  相似文献

Sociality has evolved independently many times in a diverse array of animal taxa. While sociality in some invertebrates, birds and mammals is relatively well understood, complex social behaviour in Squamate reptiles is a comparatively recent discovery. The extent to which social behaviour is phylogenetically constrained, or free to respond to environmental conditions is a key question in understanding sociality. We sampled 74 aggregations involving 137 individuals of a social lizard (Egernia stokesii) from 13 sites across a 96 250 km2 area showing a wide range of environmental conditions. Over all locations, 70% of the lizards were found in aggregations, supporting the previous suggestion that aggregation in this species is phylogenetically constrained. However, the size of aggregations was negatively related to spatial variation in aridity and daily variation in maximum temperature, suggesting that social behaviour also varied in response to harsh environmental conditions. Lizards aggregated more in arid areas and on cold days. Our results show that it is overly simplistic to regard social behaviour in E. stokesii as either phylogenetically constrained or environmentally determined. A more nuanced appreciation of the extent to which social behaviour is free to vary in response to environmental conditions improves our understanding of social behaviour in Squamate reptiles.  相似文献

Gene drives offer the possibility of altering and even suppressing wild populations of countless plant and animal species, and CRISPR technology now provides the technical feasibility of engineering them. However, population-suppression gene drives are prone to select resistance, should it arise. Here, we develop mathematical and computational models to identify conditions under which suppression drives will evade resistance, even if resistance is present initially. Previous models assumed resistance is allelic to the drive. We relax this assumption and show that linkage between the resistance and drive loci is critical to the evolution of resistance and that evolution of resistance requires (negative) linkage disequilibrium between the two loci. When the two loci are unlinked or only partially so, a suppression drive that causes limited inviability can evolve to fixation while causing only a minor increase in resistance frequency. Once fixed, the drive allele no longer selects resistance. Our analyses suggest that among gene drives that cause moderate suppression, toxin-antidote systems are less apt to select for resistance than homing drives. Single drives of moderate effect might cause only moderate population suppression, but multiple drives (perhaps delivered sequentially) would allow arbitrary levels of suppression. The most favorable case for evolution of resistance appears to be with suppression homing drives in which resistance is dominant and fully suppresses transmission distortion; partial suppression by resistance heterozygotes or recessive resistance are less prone to resistance evolution. Given that it is now possible to engineer CRISPR-based gene drives capable of circumventing allelic resistance, this design may allow for the engineering of suppression gene drives that are effectively resistance-proof.  相似文献

Owing to its lipophilic property, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is rapidly absorbed by both the liver and brain. We investigated the protective effects of crocin against brain damage caused by CCl4. Fifty rats were divided into five groups of ten: control, corn oil, crocin, CCl4 and CCl4 + crocin. CCl4 administration decreased glutathione (GSH) and total antioxidant status (TAS) levels, and catalase (CAT) activity, while significant increases were observed in malondialdehyde (MDA) and total oxidant status (TOS) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. The cerebral cortex nuclear lamina developed a spongy appearance, neuronal degeneration was observed in the hippocampus, and heterochromatic and pyknotic neurons with increased cytoplasmic eosinophilia were observed in the hippocampus after CCl4 treatment. Because crocin exhibits strong antioxidant properties, crocin treatment increased GSH and TAS levels and CAT activities, and decreased MDA and TOS levels and SOD activity; significant improvements also were observed in histologic architecture. We found that crocin administration nearly eliminated CCl4 induced brain damage by preventing oxidative stress.  相似文献
