Many farmland‐breeding wader species have declined across Europe, probably due to reductions in reproductive output caused by high nest losses as a result of agriculture or predation, or low chick survival between hatching and fledging. Most studies have focused on nest failures, and the factors affecting post‐hatching survival of chicks are poorly known. In an experimental approach, we fenced parts of the arable foraging areas of Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus families to quantify chick survival simultaneously in the presence and absence of ground predators. Lapwing chicks were radiotagged to estimate survival probabilities by daily locations, applying multistate capture–recapture models. During the night, chick survival was considerably lower outside fenced plots than within. During the day, chick survival was higher than at night and did not differ between protected and unprotected plots. This suggests that nocturnal ground predators such as Red Foxes Vulpes vulpes were responsible for a significant proportion of chick mortality. Cumulative survival probability from hatching to fledging was 0.24 in chicks within fenced plots, but virtually zero in chicks outside fenced plots. In farmland, temporary electric fences can be effective in minimizing the impact of ground predators and offer a promising short‐term method to increase fledging success of precocial birds. 相似文献

Colonization of novel habitats is often associated with differences in ecological community composition. For small diurnal animals, differences in predator diversity and abundance can lead to behavioural shifts in the novel habitat. The eastern fence lizard Sceloporus undulatus (Bosc and Daudin, 1801) recently colonized the gypsum dunes of White Sands, a predator‐poor community relative to the predator‐rich community of the surrounding Chihuahuan dark‐soil habitat. We used field experiments to assess S. undulatus anti‐predator behaviour in white‐sand versus dark‐soil habitats, and used laboratory assays to determine whether behavioural differences could be mediated by hormonal regulation. Overall, we found that white‐sand lizards were less vigilant but more wary than their dark‐soil counterparts; it took them longer to detect a simulated predator, but once detected they were more likely to retreat from their perches than dark‐soil lizards. At the proximate level, differences in anti‐predator behaviour could not be explained by differences in plasma hormone levels (corticosterone and testosterone); we detected elevated corticosterone for lizards in our stress treatment relative to control treatment, but found no differences between habitats in baseline or acute corticosterone levels. At the evolutionary level, we suggest that differences in anti‐predator behaviour may be explained by differences across habitats in predation environment, habituation, and/or the cost of retreating. Over the last two and half decades, strong evidence showed that the terrestrial ecosystems are acting as a net sink for atmospheric carbon. However the spatial and temporal patterns of variation in the sink are not well known. In this study, we examined latitudinal patterns of interannual variability (IAV) in net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2 based on 163 site-years of eddy covariance data, from 39 northern-hemisphere research sites located at latitudes ranging from ∼29°N to ∼64°N. We computed the standard deviation of annual NEE integrals at individual sites to represent absolute interannual variability (AIAV), and the corresponding coefficient of variation as a measure of relative interannual variability (RIAV). Our results showed decreased trends of annual NEE with increasing latitude for both deciduous broadleaf forests and evergreen needleleaf forests. Gross primary production (GPP) explained a significant proportion of the spatial variation of NEE across evergreen needleleaf forests, whereas, across deciduous broadleaf forests, it is ecosystem respiration (Re). In addition, AIAV in GPP and Re increased significantly with latitude in deciduous broadleaf forests, but AIAV in GPP decreased significantly with latitude in evergreen needleleaf forests. Furthermore, RIAV in NEE, GPP, and Re appeared to increase significantly with latitude in deciduous broadleaf forests, but not in evergreen needleleaf forests. Correlation analyses showed air temperature was the primary environmental factor that determined RIAV of NEE in deciduous broadleaf forest across the North American sites, and none of the chosen climatic factors could explain RIAV of NEE in evergreen needleleaf forests. Mean annual NEE significantly increased with latitude in grasslands. Precipitation was dominant environmental factor for the spatial variation of magnitude and IAV in GPP and Re in grasslands. 相似文献

Exposure of animals to hyperoxia results in respiratory failure and death within 72 h. Histologic evaluation of the lungs of these animals demonstrates epithelial apoptosis and necrosis. Although the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is widely thought to be responsible for the cell death observed following exposure to hyperoxia, it is not clear whether they act upstream of activation of the cell death pathway or whether they are generated as a result of mitochondrial membrane permeabilization and caspase activation. We hypothesized that the generation of ROS was required for hyperoxia-induced cell death upstream of Bax activation. In primary rat alveolar epithelial cells, we found that exposure to hyperoxia resulted in the generation of ROS that was completely prevented by the administration of the combined superoxide dismutase/catalase mimetic EUK-134 (Eukarion, Inc., Bedford, MA). Exposure to hyperoxia resulted in the activation of Bax at the mitochondrial membrane, cytochrome c release, and cell death. The administration of EUK-134 prevented Bax activation, cytochrome c release, and cell death. In a mouse lung epithelial cell line (MLE-12), the overexpression of Bcl-XL protected cells against hyperoxia by preventing the activation of Bax at the mitochondrial membrane. We conclude that exposure to hyperoxia results in Bax activation at the mitochondrial membrane and subsequent cytochrome c release. Bax activation at the mitochondrial membrane requires the generation of ROS and can be prevented by the overexpression of Bcl-XL. 相似文献

The shape of stimulus onset is a distinct feature of many acoustic communication signals. In some grasshopper species the steepness of amplitude rise of the pulses which comprise the song subunits is sexually dimorphic and a major criterion of sex recognition. Here, we describe potential mechanisms by which auditory interneurons could transmit the information on onset steepness from the metathoracic ganglion to the brain of the grasshopper. Since no single interneuron unequivocally encoded onset steepness, it appears that this information has to reside in the relative spike counts or the relative spike timing of a small group of ascending auditory interneurons. The decisive component of this mechanism seems to be the steepness-dependent leading inhibition displayed by two interneurons (AN3, AN4). The inhibition increased with increasing onset steepness, thus delayed the excitatory response, and in one interneuron even strongly reduced the spike count. Other ascending interneurons, whose responses were little affected by onset steepness, could serve as reference neurons (AN6, AN12). Thus, our results suggest that a comparison of both, spike count and first-spike timing within a small set of ascending interneurons could yield the information on signal onset steepness, that is on the sex of the sender. 相似文献

Oncocyclus irises endemic to Lebanon form a complex of three closely related taxa replacing each other over short geographical distances in a linear habitat. In order to characterize the appropriate taxonomic levels and to assess their conservation status, we investigated patterns of phenotypic variability and the partitioning of genetic variation within and among populations using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Multivariate analysis (principal components analysis and multiple correspondence analysis), based on 16 quantitative and six qualitative characters, revealed no separation between populations or taxa. Moreover, no morphological character could be used to define clear boundaries between populations/taxa. The genetic characterization revealed high levels of polymorphism and diversity (Hs). Principal components analysis showed population delimitations, but no groupings reflecting the currently defined taxa could be identified. Both morphological and genetic data showed that Lebanese oncocyclus irises could not be fitted into clear taxonomic boundaries. The Wnt/β-catenin signaling cascade activates genes that allow cells to adopt particular identities throughout development. In adult self-renewing tissues like intestine and blood, activation of the Wnt pathway maintains a progenitor phenotype, whereas forced inhibition of this pathway promotes differentiation. In the lung alveolus, type 2 epithelial cells (AT2) have been described as progenitors for the type 1 cell (AT1), but whether AT2 progenitors use the same signaling mechanisms to control differentiation as rapidly renewing tissues is not known. We show that adult AT2 cells do not exhibit constitutive β-catenin signaling in vivo, using the AXIN2+/LacZ reporter mouse, or after fresh isolation of an enriched population of AT2 cells. Rather, this pathway is activated in lungs subjected to bleomycin-induced injury, as well as upon placement of AT2 cells in culture. Forced inhibition of β-catenin/T-cell factor signaling in AT2 cultures leads to increased cell death. Cells that survive show reduced migration after wounding and reduced expression of AT1 cell markers (T1α and RAGE). These results suggest that AT2 cells may function as facultative progenitors, where activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling during lung injury promotes alveolar epithelial survival, migration, and differentiation toward an AT1-like phenotype. 相似文献
