Introduced species often pose serious threats to biodiversity, but occasionally confusion arises as to whether a species really is introduced or is in fact an overlooked native. A recent UK conservation dilemma has centred on the status of the pool frog Rana lessonae. This species has been the subject of documented introductions from central and southern Europe since the early 1800s, the accepted position being that all UK R. lessonae populations are descended from these introductions. However, a closer examination of early UK literature sources, and recent discoveries of isolated, native R. lessonae populations in Sweden and Norway, led some herpetologists to question whether the species was in fact present as a native at some locations prior to the introductions. Research was initiated along four major lines of enquiry: genetic, bioacoustic, archaeozoological and archival. A high degree of convergence among the genetic and bioacoustic investigations demonstrated that the potentially native UK pool frogs were closely related to Scandinavian frogs, thus ruling out introductions from further south as a potential origin. Subfossil evidence of pool frogs was found from ca. 1000 years before present, demonstrating that the species occurred in the UK prior to known introductions. Archival sources produced no historical support for introductions from northern Europe. The postglacial history inferred for these northern populations is consistent with the known climatic and geographical conditions. Taken together, the evidence for the native status of the pool frog is compelling, and furthermore the UK population appears to be part of a distinct northern clade.  相似文献

To investigate the increased incidence of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) that occurs in infants of diabetic mothers (IDM) with poor maternal glucose homeostasis, we infused glucose intravenously at a rate of 14 +/- 2 (SD) mg.kg-1.min-1 into eight twin and four singleton chronically catheterized fetal lambs from 112 days (0.77) gestation onward. Twelve catheterized and seven uncatheterized fetuses served as controls, including the eight twins of the glucose-treated fetuses. Glucose infusion resulted in a twofold elevation in fetal serum glucose levels and a 2.2-fold elevation in fetal serum insulin levels. Before 113 days (0.9) gestation, pulmonary disaturated phosphatidylcholine (DSPC) content was 1.5-fold higher in the glucose-infused fetuses than in the controls. However, after 0.9 gestation, pulmonary DSPC content increased 2.2-fold in the controls but did not increase significantly in the glucose-infused fetuses. In addition, the DSPC content of lung lavage was 5.0-fold higher in the controls and lung stability to air inflation was 2.0-fold greater and to deflation was 2.2-fold greater than in the glucose-infused fetuses. Pulmonary adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate-dependent protein kinase activity was also 1.5-fold higher, and pulmonary protein kinase C activity was 1.3-fold higher in the controls than in the glucose-infused fetuses. In contrast, glucose infusion was associated with a 1.8-fold increase in pulmonary glycogen content and with increased activities of glycogen phosphorylase kinase and glycogen phosphorylase. We conclude that the effects of chronic glucose infusion on fetal lamb lung DSPC and lung stability are compatible with a predisposition of the fetus to develop RDS.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The mechanisms of variation, selection and inheritance, on which evolution by natural selection depends, are not fixed over evolutionary time. Current evolutionary biology is increasingly focussed on understanding how the evolution of developmental organisations modifies the distribution of phenotypic variation, the evolution of ecological relationships modifies the selective environment, and the evolution of reproductive relationships modifies the heritability of the evolutionary unit. The major transitions in evolution, in particular, involve radical changes in developmental, ecological and reproductive organisations that instantiate variation, selection and inheritance at a higher level of biological organisation. However, current evolutionary theory is poorly equipped to describe how these organisations change over evolutionary time and especially how that results in adaptive complexes at successive scales of organisation (the key problem is that evolution is self-referential, i.e. the products of evolution change the parameters of the evolutionary process). Here we first reinterpret the central open questions in these domains from a perspective that emphasises the common underlying themes. We then synthesise the findings from a developing body of work that is building a new theoretical approach to these questions by converting well-understood theory and results from models of cognitive learning. Specifically, connectionist models of memory and learning demonstrate how simple incremental mechanisms, adjusting the relationships between individually-simple components, can produce organisations that exhibit complex system-level behaviours and improve the adaptive capabilities of the system. We use the term “evolutionary connectionism” to recognise that, by functionally equivalent processes, natural selection acting on the relationships within and between evolutionary entities can result in organisations that produce complex system-level behaviours in evolutionary systems and modify the adaptive capabilities of natural selection over time. We review the evidence supporting the functional equivalences between the domains of learning and of evolution, and discuss the potential for this to resolve conceptual problems in our understanding of the evolution of developmental, ecological and reproductive organisations and, in particular, the major evolutionary transitions.  相似文献

Probabilistic tests of topology offer a powerful means of evaluating competing phylogenetic hypotheses. The performance of the nonparametric Shimodaira-Hasegawa (SH) test, the parametric Swofford-Olsen-Waddell-Hillis (SOWH) test, and Bayesian posterior probabilities were explored for five data sets for which all the phylogenetic relationships are known with a very high degree of certainty. These results are consistent with previous simulation studies that have indicated a tendency for the SOWH test to be prone to generating Type 1 errors because of model misspecification coupled with branch length heterogeneity. These results also suggest that the SOWH test may accord overconfidence in the true topology when the null hypothesis is in fact correct. In contrast, the SH test was observed to be much more conservative, even under high substitution rates and branch length heterogeneity. For some of those data sets where the SOWH test proved misleading, the Bayesian posterior probabilities were also misleading. The results of all tests were strongly influenced by the exact substitution model assumptions. Simple models, especially those that assume rate homogeneity among sites, had a higher Type 1 error rate and were more likely to generate misleading posterior probabilities. For some of these data sets, the commonly used substitution models appear to be inadequate for estimating appropriate levels of uncertainty with the SOWH test and Bayesian methods. Reasons for the differences in statistical power between the two maximum likelihood tests are discussed and are contrasted with the Bayesian approach.  相似文献

Many ecosystems worldwide are dominated by introduced plant species, leading to loss of biodiversity and ecosystem function. A common but rarely tested assumption is that these plants are more abundant in introduced vs. native communities, because ecological or evolutionary-based shifts in populations underlie invasion success. Here, data for 26 herbaceous species at 39 sites, within eight countries, revealed that species abundances were similar at native (home) and introduced (away) sites - grass species were generally abundant home and away, while forbs were low in abundance, but more abundant at home. Sites with six or more of these species had similar community abundance hierarchies, suggesting that suites of introduced species are assembling similarly on different continents. Overall, we found that substantial changes to populations are not necessarily a pre-condition for invasion success and that increases in species abundance are unusual. Instead, abundance at home predicts abundance away, a potentially useful additional criterion for biosecurity programmes.  相似文献

Objective: To identify an anatomically defined region of interest (ROI) from DXA assessment of body composition that when combined with anthropometry can be used to accurately predict intra‐abdominal adipose tissue (IAAT) in overweight/obese individuals. Research Methods and Procedures: Forty‐one postmenopausal women (age, 49 to 66 years; BMI, 26 to 37 kg/m2) underwent anthropometric and body composition assessments. ROI were defined as quadrilateral boxes extending 5 or 10 cm above the iliac crest and laterally to the edges of the abdominal soft tissue. A single‐slice computed tomography (CT) scan was measured at the L3 to L4 intervertebral space, and abdominal skinfolds were taken. Results: Forward step‐wise regression revealed the best predictor model of IAAT area measured by CT (r2 = 0.68, standard error of estimate = 17%) to be: IAAT area (centimeters squared) = 51.844 + DXA 10‐cm ROI (grams) (0.031) + abdominal skinfold (millimeters) (1.342). Interobserver reliability for fat mass (r = 0.994; coefficient of variation, 2.60%) and lean mass (r = 0.986, coefficient of variation, 2.67%) in the DXA 10‐cm ROI was excellent. Discussion: This study has identified a DXA ROI that can be reliably measured using prominent anatomical landmarks, in this case, the iliac crest. Using this ROI, combined with an abdominal skinfold measurement, we have derived an equation to predict IAAT in overweight/obese postmenopausal women. This approach offers a simpler, safer, and more cost‐effective method than CT for assessing the efficacy of lifestyle interventions aimed at reducing IAAT. However, this warrants further investigation and validation with an independent cohort.  相似文献

Methane metabolism was investigated with respect to depth in intertidal microbial mats of the Great Sippewissett Salt Marsh, Massachusetts. Although sulfate-reducing organisms dominate anaerobic carbon consumption in marine microbial mats, methanogens persist and their activity varies vertically and temporally in the mat system. In the Sippewissett mats, potential methane production for all mat layers was higher in the spring (17.2 ± 4.5 nmol CH4 cm−2 day−1) than in the fall (3.0 ± 1.1 nmol CH4 cm−2 day−1) and maximal rates were consistently observed in proximity to the chemocline (5–10 mm depth). The methane flux from the mat surface did not vary appreciably over time due to the ability of methanotrophic activity to limit net methane production. Evidence indicates that both aerobic and anaerobic oxidation of methane occurs in this system. The importance of H2 as a substrate for methanogenesis appeared to be the greatest at the mat surface (0–10 mm), and the proportion of methylotrophic methanogens generally increased with depth. These results suggest that both non-equilibrium H2 dynamics and the use of non-competitive substrates permit coexistence of methanogens and sulfate-reducing organisms in the mat system.  相似文献

The existence of acetoacetyl-CoA synthetase in rat brain cytosol is reported. The coupling of this enzyme with cytosolic acetoacetyl-CoA thiolase can provide acetyl-CoA for lipogenesis and cholesterol synthesis without the need for mitochondrial participation. Fibronectin (FN) is a prototypic adhesive glycoprotein that is widely expressed in extracellular matrices and body fluids. The fibronectin molecule is dimeric, and composed of a series of repeating polypeptide modules. A recombinant fragment of FN incorporating type III repeats 12-15, and including the alternatively-spliced type three connecting segment (IIICS), was found to bind Ni(2+), Cu(2+) and Zn(2+) divalent cations, whereas a similar fragment lacking the IIICS did not. Mutation of two pairs of histidine residues in separate spliced regions of the IIICS reduced cation binding to near the level of the variant lacking the IIICS, suggesting a zinc finger-like mode of cation coordination. Analysis of native FNs purified from plasma or amniotic fluid revealed significant levels of zinc associated with those isoforms that contain the complete IIICS. Taken together, these data demonstrate that the IIICS region of FN is a novel zinc-binding module.  相似文献
