Seed bank versus seed rain in the regeneration of a tropical pioneer tree   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12  
Summary We used the tropical pioneer tree, Cecropia obtusifolia to evaluate the relative importance of different sources of seeds in the regeneration of species that depend on ephemeral sites. We studied seed production in a population established in a 5 ha plot, and dispersal, dormancy and seed predation in two recent treefall gaps (<1 year-old), two building or successional forest patches (10–15 since disturbed), and two mature forest patches (>35 years since disturbed) for a one year period at Los Tuxtlas (Mexico). Flowers and fruits were counted at monthly intervals. Annual fecundity per tree ranged from 1.4×104 to 1.4×107 seeds. Seeds were continuously available on the trees and on the ground. Average annual seed rain per m2 (as measured by 0.5×0.5 m seed traps) varied from 184 to 1925 among the six sites. Distance to nearest seed source and patch type explained more than 60% of the seed rain variation among sites. Soil seed density, estimated by counting seeds from ten samples (78.5 cm2×10 cm deep) collected from each site in October and January, ranged among the six sites from 269 to 4485 seeds per m2 in January and from 204 to 5073 in October. Soil seed viabilities were much lower (17.1% in October and 5.1% in January) than those of rain seeds (48.26%). Annual survivorships of 2.2% were estimated for seeds artificially sown on the soil surface of a gap and a mature patch, and 3.75% in a building patch. In two other experiments seed removal rates ranged from 27% to 98% in 4 days. Removal rates were significantly higher in gap and mature patches than in building patches. Ants (Paratrechina vividula) and grasshopper nymphs (Hygronemobius. sp.) were the main predators. We draw three main conclusions from our data: (1) Pathogens and predators determine low survivorship of C. obtusifolia's seeds in the soil and a rapid turnover rate (1.07 to 1.02 years) of its seed bank; (2) a continuous and copious seed production and an abundant and extensive seed rain replenish the soil seed pool in patches with different disturbance ages at least up to 86 m from nearest source; (3) more than 90% of the seeds contributing to C. obtusifolia seedling recruitment in gaps are less than one year-old. We discuss our results in the context of previous similar studies for tropical forests.  相似文献

Growing roots of Vicia faba were treated with MH for 5 h, washed for 2 h and exposed to 3H-thymidine (3H-TdR) for additional 2-h periods at 7 h, 24 h and 32 h after the onset of MH treatment, to label DNA. As the replicative DNA synthesis was suppressed by HU, an enhancement of 3H-TdR incorporation into nuclear DNA above the control, as determined by microautoradiography, was considered to be due to unscheduled DNA synthesis induced by the mutagen. A significantly higher incorporation of 3H-TdR into DNA of MH-treated roots occurred, when labelling was applied 7 h after the MH action, whereas at 24 h only slight and at 32 h no enhancement of DNA labelling above control was registered. A 3-14-day storage with 50% water content of V. faba seeds exposed to MH or MMS resulted in a recovery from mutagen-induced chromosomal damage and a significantly higher incorporation of 3H-TdR into nuclear DNA. This supports the hypothesis that recovery from MH- and MMS-induced chromosomal damage is mediated by excision repair during seed storage.  相似文献

The requirement of Ca2+ for growth and nitrogen fixation has been investigated in two strains of heterocystous blue-green algae (Anabaena sp. and Anabaena ATCC 33047). With combined nitrogen (nitrate or ammonium) or with N2 under microaerobic conditions, Ca2+ was not required for growth, at least in concentrations greater than traces. In contrast, Ca2+ was required as a macronutrient for growth and nitrogen fixation with air as the nitrogen source. Addition of Ca2+ to an aerobic culture without Ca2+ promoted, after a lag of several hours, development of nitrogenase activity and cell growth. Provision of air to a microaerobic culture in the absence of Ca2+ promoted a drastic drop in nitrogenase activity, which rapidly recovered its initial level upon restoration of microaerobic conditions. Development of nitrogenase activity in response to either Ca2+ or low oxygen tension was dependent on de novo protein synthesis. The role of Ca2+ seems to be related to protection of nitrogenase from inactivation, by conferring heterocysts resistance to oxygen.  相似文献

Nodule formation by wild-type Rhizobium meliloti is strongly suppressed in younger parts of alfalfa (Medicago sativum L.) root systems as a feedback response to development of the first nodules (G Caetano-Anollés, WD Bauer [1988] Planta 175: 546-557). Mutants of R. meliloti deficient in exopolysaccharide synthesis can induce the formation of organized nodular structures (pseudonodules) on alfalfa roots but are defective in their ability to invade and multiply within host tissues. The formation of empty pseudonodules by exo mutants was found to elicit a feedback suppression of nodule formation similar to that elicited by the wild-type bacteria. Inoculation of an exo mutant onto one side of a split-root system 24 hours before inoculation of the second side with wild-type cells suppressed wild-type nodule formation on the second side in proportion to the extent of pseudonodule formation by the exo mutants. The formation of pseudonodules is thus sufficient to elicit systemic feedback control of nodulation in the host root system: infection thread development and internal proliferation of the bacteria are not required for elicitation of feedback. Pseudonodule formation by the exo mutants was found to be strongly suppressed in split-root systems by prior inoculation on the opposite side with the wild type. Thus, feedback control elicited by the wild-type inhibits Rhizobium-induced redifferentiation of host root cells.  相似文献

Rhizobia are soil bacteria which symbiotically infect legume roots and generate nodules in which they fix atmospheric nitrogen for the plant in exchange for photosynthetically fixed carbon. A crucial aspect of signal exchange between these symbionts is the secretion of phenolic compounds by the host root which induce nodulation gene expression in the bacteria. Stimulation of nod gene expression by host phenolics is required for nodule formation, is biochemically specific at 10-6 M, and is mediated by nodD. We and others have shown that rhizobia display chemotaxis to 10-9 M of the same phenolic compounds. Chemotaxis to inducer phenolics is selectively reduced or abolished by mutations in certain nod genes governing nodulation efficiency or host specificity. Conversely, mutations in rhizobia that affect general motility or chemotaxis have substantial effects on nodulation efficiency and competitiveness. These findings suggest that microbes entering the rhizosphere environment may utilize minor, non-nutrient components in root exudates as signals to guide their movement towards the root surface and elicit changes in gene expression appropriate to this environment.  相似文献

Rye seedlings, tillering plants and crop residues were allowed to decompose in model incubation experiments. Young tissues gave rise to high concentrations of allelochemicals, whereas crop residues did not produce inhibitors. Seven phenolic acids were identified in the investigated materials; p-hydroxybenzoic protocatechuic, gallic, vanillic, syringic, p-coumaric, ferulic as well as benzoic acid. However, neither the level of these acids nor the total content of phenolic compounds corresponded to the level of phytotoxicity determined in bioassays. This demonstrated that, apart from phenolics, other unidentified water-soluble organic compounds were also responsible for the toxicity of rye decomposition products. The photometric method was used to test a possibility proposed recently that a new photoreceptor with maximum activity at 620 nm is involved in mediating chloroplast rotation in Mougeotia (Z Lechowski, J Bialczyk [1988] Plant Physiol 88: 189-193). The hypothesis was tested under conditions of continuous dichromatic unilateral or mutually perpendicular irradiation with red light of wavelengths 620 or 660 (680) nanometers and far-red. When the red light was polarized parallel to the long cell axis, chloroplast response could be monitored by changing the direction of far-red irradiation. The level of the response obtained with red and far-red applied from the same direction depended on far-red intensity: at higher fluence rates the maximum response was shifted to longer wavelengths of red light. A high fluence rate of far-red inhibited the response. The absorption coefficients of Mougeotia chloroplasts were measured for the studied wave-lengths using the microphotometric method. Possible impact of absorption by the chloroplast on photoreception has been discussed. Current and previous results can be interpreted in terms of phytochrome action and do not support the involvement of the hypothetical 620 nanometer photoreceptor.  相似文献

The photoperiodic variations of testosterone plasmatic levels in male rabbits have been studied. The animals were subjected to the influence of three circadian rhythms: 12/12, 14/10 and 10/14 h of light/darkness. The hormone assay was carried out using an enzymeimmunoassay method (Competitive ELISA). Blood samples were of two different types: seriated and non-seriated, to find if these might be any differences in the results. It is concluded that testosterone plasmatic levels are within physiologic values (0.3-10.0 ng/ml), although differences depending on the light/darkness cycle and on the type of blood extraction are remarkable; for this reason the selection of the circadian rhythm will depend on the experimentation that is to be carried out.  相似文献

The lysosomal protease, pro-cathepsin D, is overexpressed and secreted by human breast cancers. In estrogen-responsive breast cancer cell lines, estrogens and growth factors stimulate cathepsin D expression through distinct mechanisms. Clinical studies indicate that high cathepsin D concentration in primary breast cancers is correlated with an increased risk of metastasis and particularly useful to orientate node-negative tumors towards an adjuvant therapy.  相似文献
