Times of pollination of different taxa in the atmosphere of Perugia (Central Italy) over an 11-year period (1982–1992) were recorded and analysed by means of a 7-day volumetric Hirst-type pollen trap. For some taxa, the pollination period varied from year to year from a chronological and/or quantitative point of view. Several taxa showed a linkage in their starting dates of pollination. Knowledge of this kind of linkage allows us to build a forecasting model. 相似文献

An unprecedented epidemic of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection recently started in countries of the Indian Ocean area, causing an acute and painful syndrome with strong fever, asthenia, skin rash, polyarthritis, and lethal cases of encephalitis. The basis for chikungunya disease and the tropism of CHIKV remain unknown. Here, we describe the replication characteristics of recent clinical CHIKV strains. Human epithelial and endothelial cells, primary fibroblasts and, to a lesser extent, monocyte-derived macrophages, were susceptible to infection and allowed viral production. In contrast, CHIKV did not replicate in lymphoid and monocytoid cell lines, primary lymphocytes and monocytes, or monocyte-derived dendritic cells. CHIKV replication was cytopathic and associated with an induction of apoptosis in infected cells. Chloroquine, bafilomycin-A1, and short hairpin RNAs against dynamin-2 inhibited viral production, indicating that viral entry occurs through pH-dependent endocytosis. CHIKV was highly sensitive to the antiviral activity of type I and II interferons. These results provide a general insight into the interaction between CHIKV and its mammalian host. 相似文献

Very little is known about how environmental changes such as increasing temperature affect disease dynamics in the ocean, especially at large spatial scales. We asked whether the frequency of warm temperature anomalies is positively related to the frequency of coral disease across 1,500 km of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. We used a new high-resolution satellite dataset of ocean temperature and 6 y of coral disease and coral cover data from annual surveys of 48 reefs to answer this question. We found a highly significant relationship between the frequencies of warm temperature anomalies and of white syndrome, an emergent disease, or potentially, a group of diseases, of Pacific reef-building corals. The effect of temperature was highly dependent on coral cover because white syndrome outbreaks followed warm years, but only on high (>50%) cover reefs, suggesting an important role of host density as a threshold for outbreaks. Our results indicate that the frequency of temperature anomalies, which is predicted to increase in most tropical oceans, can increase the susceptibility of corals to disease, leading to outbreaks where corals are abundant. 相似文献

The nonpeptide AVE-0991, which has been reported as a selective ligand for the angiotensin-(1-7) [ANG-(1-7)] receptor Mas, has actions similar to those attributed to the cardioprotective product of the renin-angiotensin system, ANG-(1-7). In this study, we evaluated the cardiac effects of AVE-0991 in normal and infarcted male Wistar rats. Myocardial infarction was induced by left coronary artery ligation. At the end of the treatment, the Langendorff technique was used to analyze cardiac function. Left ventricle serial sections were dyed with Gomori trichrome stain to quantify the infarcted area. In normal hearts, AVE-0991 produced a significant decrease in perfusion pressure and an increase in systolic tension, rate of tension rise and fall (+/-dT/dt), and heart rate. These effects were completely blocked by the perfusion of the hearts with a solution containing the selective ANG-(1-7) antagonist A-779. N(G)-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester treatment abolished the AVE-0991-induced vasodilation in isolated hearts. AVE-0991 significantly attenuated the decrease in systolic tension (sham operated, 13.00 +/- 1.02 g; infarction, 7.18 +/- 0.66 g; AVE treated, 9.23 +/- 1.05 g, n = 5), +dT/dt, -dT/dt, and heart rate induced by myocardial infarction. Infarction-induced vasoconstriction was completely prevented by AVE-0991 treatment. Furthermore, AVE-0991 significantly decreased the infarcted area (6.98 +/- 1.01 vs. 3.94 +/- 1.04 mm(2) in AVE-treated rats). These data indicate that the compound AVE-0991 produces beneficial effects in isolated perfused rat hearts involving the ANG-(1-7) receptor Mas and the release of nitric oxide. To investigate the venoconstrictor effect of angiotensin II (Ang II) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), we used preparations of mesenteric venular beds and the circular muscle of the portal veins. Vessels were tested with Ang II in the presence or absence of losartan, PD 123319, HOE 140, L-NAME, indomethacin, or celecoxib. In the mesenteric venular bed of SHR, the effect of Ang II (0.1 nmol) was nearly abolished by losartan and enhanced by HOE 140, indomethacin, and celecoxib, while PD123319 and L-NAME had no effect. In portal vein preparations, cumulative-concentration response curves (CCRC) to Ang II (0.1–100 nmol/L) exhibited a lower maximal response (Emax) in SHR compared to Wistar rats. AT1 receptor expression was similar in the two strains, while AT2 receptor levels were lower in SHR portal veins when compared to Wistar. In SHR portal veins, losartan shifted the CCRC to Ang II to the right, while indomethacin and HOE 140 increased the Emax to Ang II. PD 123319, celecoxib, and L-NAME had no effect. Taken together, our results suggest that Ang II-induced venoconstriction in SHR is mediated by activation of AT1 receptors and this effect may be counterbalanced by kinin B2 receptor and COX metabolites. Furthermore, our data indicate that there are different cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of venous tonus of normotensive and hypertensive rats. Fast algorithms for analysing sequence data are presented. An algorithm for strict homologies finds all common subsequences of length greater than or equal to 6 in two given sequences. With it, nucleic acid pieces five thousand nucleotides long can be compared in five seconds on CDC 6600. Secondary structure algorithms generate the N most stable secondary structures of an RNA molecule, taking into account all loop contributions, and the formation of all possible base-pairs in stems, including odd pairs (G.G., C.U., etc.). They allow a typical 100-nucleotide sequence to be analysed in 10 seconds. The homology and secondary structure programs are respectively illustrated with a comparison of two phage genomes, and a discussion of Drosophila melanogaster 55 RNA folding. 相似文献

Abstract The cell surface hydrophobicity of Renibacterium salmoninarum strains was examined using a salt aggregation method. Those strains which were virulent in the test animal were sticky, auto-agglutinating and possessed a hydrophobic cell surface. Those strains with a low virulence were non-sticky, non-agglutinating and failed to aggregate in a high molar salt. Strains could not be distinguished using biochemical tests. Bacteriophage phiX174 cannot grow in a temperature-sensitive dnaC mutant of Escherichia coli C at the nonpermissive temperature. The inability to grow is the result of inhibition of virus DNA synthesis. Parental replicative form synthesis is not temperature sensitive. Single-stranded virus DNA continues to be synthesized for at least 45 min after shifting to the nonpermissive temperature late in infection. In contrast, the replication of the replicative form terminates within 5 min after shifting to the nonpermissive temperature. 相似文献

Evidence is reported that shows the presence in Escherichia coli K-12 of a newly found acetolactate synthase. This enzyme is the product of two genes, ilvH and ilvI, both located very close to leu. Amber mutations have been found in both genes and therefore their products are polypeptides. Mutations in the ilvH gene cause the appearance of an acetolactate synthase activity which is relatively resistant to valine inhibition and can be separated by adsorption on hydroxylapatite from another activity present in the extract and more sensitive to valine inhibition than the former. A mutant altered in the ilvI gene was isolated among the revertants sensitive to valine inhibition of an ilvH mutant. Such a mutant lacks the resistant acetolactate synthase. A temperature-sensitive revertant of the ilvI mutant contained a temperature-sensitive acetolactate synthase. Thus ilvI is the structural gene for a specific acetolactate synthase. The activity of the ilvH gene product has been measured by adding an extract containing it to a purified ilvI acetolactate synthase, which, upon incubation, became more sensitive to valine inhibition. Conversely, a valine-sensitive acetolactate synthase (the product of the ilvH and the ilvI genes) became more resistant to valine inhibition upon incubation with an extract of a strain containing a missense ilvH gene product. 相似文献
