Objective
The present study aimed at comparing frontal beta power between long-term (LTM) and first-time meditators (FTM), before, during and after a meditation session. We hypothesized that LTM would present lower beta power than FTM due to lower effort of attention and awareness.Methods
Twenty one participants were recruited, eleven of whom were long-term meditators. The subjects were asked to rest for 4 minutes before and after open monitoring (OM) meditation (40 minutes).Results
The two-way ANOVA revealed an interaction between the group and moment factors for the Fp1 (p<0.01), F7 (p = 0.01), F3 (p<0.01), Fz (p<0.01), F4 (p<0.01), F8 (p<0.01) electrodes.Conclusion
We found low power frontal beta activity for LTM during the task and this may be associated with the fact that OM is related to bottom-up pathways that are not present in FTM.Significance

The raft hypothesis proposes that microdomains enriched in sphingolipids, cholesterol, and specific proteins are transiently formed to accomplish important cellular tasks. Equivocally, detergent-resistant membranes were initially assumed to be identical to membrane rafts, because of similarities between their compositions. In fact, the impact of detergents in membrane organization is still controversial. Here, we use phase contrast and fluorescence microscopy to observe giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) made of erythrocyte membrane lipids (erythro-GUVs) when exposed to the detergent Triton X-100 (TX-100). We clearly show that TX-100 has a restructuring action on biomembranes. Contact with TX-100 readily induces domain formation on the previously homogeneous membrane of erythro-GUVs at physiological and room temperatures. The shape and dynamics of the formed domains point to liquid-ordered/liquid-disordered (Lo/Ld) phase separation, typically found in raft-like ternary lipid mixtures. The Ld domains are then separated from the original vesicle and completely solubilized by TX-100. The insoluble vesicle left, in the Lo phase, represents around 2/3 of the original vesicle surface at room temperature and decreases to almost 1/2 at physiological temperature. This chain of events could be entirely reproduced with biomimetic GUVs of a simple ternary lipid mixture, 2:1:2 POPC/SM/chol (phosphatidylcholine/sphyngomyelin/cholesterol), showing that this behavior will arise because of fundamental physicochemical properties of simple lipid mixtures. This work provides direct visualization of TX-100-induced domain formation followed by selective (Ld phase) solubilization in a model system with a complex biological lipid composition. 相似文献

There is some evidence that dogs can be naturally infected by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis in endemic areas of paracoccidioidomycosis. In order to evaluate canine infection with this fungus, a survey with 149 urban
and 126 rural dogs was carried out using ELISA and intradermal tests with the gp43 antigen of P. brasiliensis in Uberaba, Minas Gerais state of Brazil. Forty-one out of 149 urban dogs were euthanatized and had their lungs, liver and
spleen removed. One slice from each viscera was processed for histopathological examination and the remaining was homogenized and then cultivated on mycobiotic agar
at room temperature and Fava-Netto medium at 35°C and observed for 12 weeks. Of urban dogs, 75 (50.3%) were small adult females,
56 (36%) were strays, while 93 (64%) had been donated to the municipal zoonosis control center. Nine (6.2%) had a positive
intradermal test without statistical differences regarding gender, race, nutritional status or origin. No colonies with microscopic
or morphology appearances resembling P. brasiliensis were isolated, nor granulomatous process or fungal structures were observed from histopathological examination. Eighty (53.6%)
of the urban dogs presented seroreactivity, without statistical differences regarding gender, race, nutritional state, origin,
or positive intradermal test. Of 126 rural dogs, 102 (80.5%) presented antibodies against gp43 antigen, and this was statistically
significant in relation to the reactivity detected in urban dogs (P = 0.0001). Thus, dogs are commonly infected with P. brasiliensis, but they probably present natural resistance to develop paracoccidioidomycosis. 相似文献

The sub-discipline of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) has emerged as a central topic in contemporary ecological
research. However, to date no study has evaluated the prominence and publication biases in BEF research. Herein we report
the results of a careful quantitative assessment of BEF research published in five core general ecology journals from 1990
to 2007 to determine the position of BEF research within ecology, identify patterns of research effort within BEF research,
and discuss their probable proximal and historical causes. The relative importance of BEF publications increased exponentially
during the period analyzed and was significantly greater than the average growth of ecological literature, affirming the prominence
of BEF as a current paradigm in ecology. However, BEF research exhibited a strong bias toward experimental studies on terrestrial
plant communities, with significantly lower effort devoted to the functional aspects of biodiversity in aquatic systems, multiple
trophic level systems, and animal or microbial communities. Such trends may be explained by a combination of methodological
adequacy and historic epistemological differences in ecological thinking. We suggest that BEF researchers should direct more
effort toward the study of aquatic systems and animal communities, emphasize long-term and trophically complex experiments,
such as those with multi-trophic microbial communities, employ larger-scale field observational studies and increase the use
of integrative and theoretical studies. Many technical and analytical methodologies that are already employed in ecological
research, such as stable isotopes, paleobiology, remote sensing, and model selection criteria, can facilitate these aims.
Overcoming the above-mentioned shortcomings of current BEF research will greatly improve our ability to predict how biodiversity
loss will affect ecosystem processes and services in natural ecosystems. 相似文献

Serum proteins from 47 healthy greater rheas (Rhea americana; male and female) were separated by electrophoresis in order to characterize normal reference ranges. Determination of total
protein concentration was performed through biuret reaction. The mean value of total serum protein was 4.4 g/dL. Absolute
concentrations of serum proteins were determined by agarose gel electrophoretic fractioning. Five fractions were analyzed:
albumin, alpha, beta1, beta2, and gamma globulins, and the average values in grams per deciliter were 2.39, 0.32, 0.45, 0.30,

The study of vocal behavior can reveal important aspects of how and why a species communicates in relation to ecological and
social challenges. We here focus on vocal communication in golden-backed uakaris (Cacajao melanocephalus), diurnal, pitheciine monkeys that exhibit fission-fusion social organization and typically inhabit dense forests that limit
the potential for visual communication. Moreover, the species spends little time engaged in tactile or olfactory communication,
e.g., social grooming and scent marking, respectively. Hence, vocalizations may be very important for the coordination of
social organization in these monkeys. We 1) categorized golden-backed uakari vocalizations, 2) ascertained their behavioral
context, and 3) investigated whether golden-backed uakari calls can encode information about the signaler. We observed the
monkeys during 2 wet seasons in the flooded igapó forest of Jaú National Park, Brazil. We showed that golden-backed uakaris
have 9 call types in their vocal repertoire, all distinguishable by ear and from analysis of spectrograms. Some calls, e.g.,
play-specific calls, were used only in particular behavioral contexts, and by individuals of specific age, whereas others
were emitted under a range of situations. The structure of the loud tchó call varied among individuals, and according to behavioral context, i.e., whether individuals were foraging/feeding, traveling,
or performing agonistic interactions. This knowledge of the species’ vocal repertoire is valuable for surveying the monkeys

Static cell culture has serious limitations in its ability to represent cellular behaviour within a live organism. In vivo, cells are constantly exposed to the flow of bodily fluids and contact with other cell types. Bioreactors provide the opportunity to study cells in an environment that more closely resembles the in vivo setting because cell cultures can be exposed to dynamic flow in contact with or in proximity to other cell types. In this study we compared the metabolic profile of a dynamic cell culture system to that of a static cell culture in three different cellular phenotypes: adipocytes, endothelial cells and hepatocytes. Albumin, glucose, free fatty acids, glycerol, and lactate were measured over 48 h. We show that all three cell types have increased glucose uptake in the presence of flow; lactate release was also significantly affected. We provide robust evidence that the presence of flow significantly modifies cellular metabolism. While flow provides a more uniform nutrient distribution and increases metabolite turnover, our results indicate that different cell types have specific metabolic responses to flow, suggesting cell-specific flow-regulated activation of metabolite signalling pathways. 相似文献

The murine model of T. cruzi infection has provided compelling evidence that development of host resistance against intracellular protozoans critically depends on the activation of members of the Toll-like receptor (TLR) family via the MyD88 adaptor molecule. However, the possibility that TLR/MyD88 signaling pathways also control the induction of immunoprotective CD8+ T cell-mediated effector functions has not been investigated to date. We addressed this question by measuring the frequencies of IFN-γ secreting CD8+ T cells specific for H-2Kb-restricted immunodominant peptides as well as the in vivo Ag-specific cytotoxic response in infected animals that are deficient either in TLR2, TLR4, TLR9 or MyD88 signaling pathways. Strikingly, we found that T. cruzi-infected Tlr2−/−, Tlr4−/−, Tlr9−/
− or Myd88−/− mice generated both specific cytotoxic responses and IFN-γ secreting CD8+ T cells at levels comparable to WT mice, although the frequency of IFN-γ+CD4+ cells was diminished in infected Myd88−/− mice. We also analyzed the efficiency of TLR4-driven immune responses against T. cruzi using TLR4-deficient mice on the C57BL genetic background (B6 and B10). Our studies demonstrated that TLR4 signaling is required for optimal production of IFN-γ, TNF-α and nitric oxide (NO) in the spleen of infected animals and, as a consequence, Tlr4−/− mice display higher parasitemia levels. Collectively, our results indicate that TLR4, as well as previously shown for TLR2, TLR9 and MyD88, contributes to the innate immune response and, consequently, resistance in the acute phase of infection, although each of these pathways is not individually essential for the generation of class I-restricted responses against T. cruzi. 相似文献
