Effects of fire on water and salinity relations of riparian woody taxa 总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
Water and salinity relations were evaluated in recovering burned individuals of the dominant woody taxa from low-elevation riparian plant communities of the southwestern U.S. Soil elemental analyses indicated that concentrations of most nutrients increased following fire, contributing to a potential nutrient abundance but also elevated alluvium salinity. Boron, to which naturalized Tamarix ramosissima is tolerant, was also elevated in soils following fire. Lower moisture in the upper 30 cm of burned site soil profiles was attributed to shifts in evapotranspiration following fire. Higher leaf stomatal conductance occurred in all taxa on burned sites. This is apparently due to higher photosynthetic photon flux density at the midcanopy level and may be partially mitigated by reduced unit growth in resprouting burned individuals. Predawn water potentials varied little among sites, as was expected for plants exhibiting largely phreatophytic water uptake. Midday water potentials in recovering Salix gooddingii growing in the Colorado River floodplain reached levels which are considered stressful. Decreased hydraulic efficiency was also indicated for this species by examining transpiration-water potential regressions. Recovering, burned Tamarix and Tessaria sericea had enriched leaf tissue 13C relative to unburned controls. Higher water use efficiency following fire in these taxa may be attributed to halophytic adaptations, and to elevated foliar nitrogen in Tessaria. Consequently, mechanisms are proposed which would facilitate increased community dominance of Tamarix and Tessaria in association with fire. The theory that whole ecosystem processes are altered by invading species may thus be extended to include those processes related to disturbance. 相似文献

Corn root plasma membrane catalyzed NADH reduction of ferricyanideand cytochrome c over a wide pH range. At pH 7.5, apparent Kmsof NADH-cytochrome c pair were significantly lower than thoseof NADH-ferricyanide pair. FMN and polylysine respectively enhancedthe reduction of ferricyanide and cytochrome c. Yet, polyaspartatedecreased the ferricyanide reduction. NADH oxidation observedin the presence of both ferricyanide and cytochrome c was significantlyslower than the sum of rates obtained with individual acceptors.The results suggest that the membrane may contain differentbut not totally independent reduction sites for cytochrome cand ferricyanide. Addition of methyl oleate to a Streptomyces hygroscopicus NRRL B-1865 culture modified the metabolic properties of this strain. This addition decreased the pH of the medium, increased the valine uptake of the cells and reduced their consumption of glucose until the beginning of antibiotic biosynthesis, which was delayed. At the same time, an increase in growth (× 1.8) and a marked improvement in antibiotic production (× 20) could be observed. The use of labelled methyl oleate showed that methyl oleate was not a precursor of antibiotics produced by S. hygroscopicus NRRL B-1865. It is suggested that methyl oleate addition may cause some alteration in membrane permeability, inducing an increase in H+ extrusion and stimulating the accumulation of branched amino acids, known to be direct precursors of polyether antibiotics.

Intrarectal inoculation of rhesus monkeys with low doses of SIVmac led to a prolonged clinical and virological latency that was not observed for high intrarectal doses or for intravenous inoculation. Serum arsenic concentrations of persons suffering from renal failure and undergoing hemodialysis treatment (n=85) and of healthy controls (n=25) were determined by hydride-generation AAS technique after microwave digestion. The results were evaluated by comparing
the values of both groups, considering physiological factors and individual data, as well as comorbid conditions of the hemodialysis
(HD) patients. Serum arsenic levels were diminished in the patient group compared with controls (mean values 8.5±1.8 ng/mL
vs 10.6±1.3 ng/mL). Furthermore, additional diseases within the hemodialysis group, particularly injuries of the central nervous
system (CNS), vascular diseases, and cancer, were correlated to occasionally markedly decreased serum arsenic concentrations.
It was concluded that arsenic homeostasis is disturbed by HD treatment and certain additional diseases. Desirable arsenic
concentrations in the body seem to be reasonable. This consideration results in the conclusion that arsenic could play an
essential role in human health. Thus, reference arsenic concentrations in different human tissues and body fluids should be
established in order to recognize not only arsenic intoxication, but also arsenic deficiency. Perhaps arsenic deficiency contributes
to the increased death risk of HD patients, and therefore, arsenic supplementations for patients with extremely low serum

A clone isolated from a purple podded pea (Pisum sativum L.) cDNA library was shown to contain the complete coding sequence of a polypeptide with considerable homology to various members of the ras superfamily. The ras superfamily are a group of monomeric GTP-binding proteins of 21–25 kDa found in eukaryotic cells. Conserved sequences in the isolated clone include the GTP-binding site, GDP/GTP hydrolysis domain and C-terminal Cys residues involved in membrane attachment. Comparisons of the predicted amino acid sequence with those of other ras proteins show significantly higher homologies (ca. 70%) to two mammalian gene products, those of the BRL-ras oncogene, and the canine rab7 gene, than to any of the plant ras gene products so far identified (<40% homology). The high percentage of amino acid identity suggests that this cDNA may be the product of a gene, designated Psa-rab, which is the plant counterpart of rab7. Rab/ypt proteins are a subfamily of the ras superfamily thought to be involved in intracellular transport from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi apparatus and in vesicular transport.Northern blot hybridisation analysis of total RNA from green and purple podded pea revealed a mRNA species of approximately the same size as the isolated cDNAs. 相似文献
