Soils are an important source of N2O, which can be produced both in the nitrification and the denitrification processes. Grassland soils in particular have a high potential for mineralization and subsequent nitrification and denitrification. When ploughing long term grassland soils, the resulting high supply of mineral N may provide a high potential for N2O losses. In this work, the short-term effect of ploughing a permanent grassland soil on gaseous N production was studied at different soil depths. Fertiliser and irrigation were applied in order to observe the effect of ploughing under a range of conditions. The relative proportions of N2O produced from nitrification and denitrification and the proportion of N2 gas produced from denitrification were determined using the methyl fluoride and acetylene specific inhibitors. Irrespectively to ploughing, fertiliser application increased the rates of N2O production, N2O production from nitrification, N2O production from denitrification and total denitrification (N2O + N2). Application of fertiliser also increased the denitrification N2O/N2 ratio both in the denitrification potential and in the gaseous N productions by denitrification. Ploughing promoted soil organic N mineralization which led to an increase in the rates of N2O production, N2O production from nitrification, N2O production from denitrification and total denitrification (N2O + N2). In both the ploughed and unploughed treatments the 0–10 cm soil layer was the major contributing layer to gaseous N production by all the above processes. However, the contribution of this layer decreased by ploughing, gaseous N productions from the 10 to 30 cm layer being significantly increased with respect to the unploughed treatment. Ploughing promoted both nitrification and denitrification derived N2O production, although a higher proportion of N2O lost by denitrification was observed as WFPS increased. Recently ploughed plots showed lower denitrification derived N2O percentages than those ploughed before as a result of the lower soil water content in the former plots. The effect of six phosphorus levels (0, 40, 80, 120, 160 and 200 kg/ha) on the duration of cumulative leaf area, biomass and agronomic yield was determined in the maize cultivars: Amarillo Almoloya, Cacahuacintle and Condor in 2010 and 2011. Such cultivars were sown in the Cerrillo Piedras Blancas Mexico. A completely randomized complete block design with factorial arrangement was utilized. High phosphorus levels (120, 160 and 200 kg/ha) positively affected the duration of cumulative leaf area; greatest values were obtained in Cacahuacintle. A greater duration of accumulated leaf area contributes to determine high values of biomass accumulation and grain yield in this cultivar. Leaf area duration appeared to be a useful tool for evaluating different genotypes in a given environment. 相似文献

The functional feeding groups and diversity of macroinvertebrate communities associated with duckweed mats in the New Years River (two sites) and Bloukrans River (two sites), Eastern Cape province, South Africa, were assessed. Duckweed (Lemnaceae) is a ubiquitous family of floating macrophytes. A total of 41 macroinvertebrate families were collected monthly over a six-month period from February to July 2014. Duckweed biomass in both rivers was highly variable both temporally and spatially. The majority of identified macroinvertebrate taxa were predators and detritivores, with a small percentage of herbivores. An average of approximately 26% of the macroinvertebrate taxa found were from families that include species from more than one functional feeding group. Although overall measures of diversity and ecosystem health (Fisher’s α and Simpson’s index) remained constant over time in the New Years River, significant differences in macroinvertebrate community structure were seen between sites and months on both rivers, with dissimilarity being driven by a larger number of species in the New Years River. This high variability within macroinvertebrate assemblages probably reflects a combination of heterogeneous duckweed distribution, variation in physico-chemistry, opportunistic behaviours of macroinvertebrate predators and/or successional colonisation of duckweed mats. 相似文献

Measurement of the arteriovenous differences for free amino acids across rat kidney reveals that glycine and citrulline are removed and serine and arginine are added to the circulation. In addition, glutamine is taken up in large quantities by kidneys of animals that need to excrete large quantities of acid (e.g., diabetic animals, NH4Cl-fed animals, and animals fed a high protein diet). Glutamine is the major precursor of urinary ammonia and thus renal glutamine metabolism plays a key role in acid-base homeostasis. This process occurs primarily in the cells of the convoluted proximal tubule. Glutamine carbon is converted to glucose in acidotic rats and is totally oxidized in dogs. Regulation of glutamine metabolism occurs at two levels: acute regulation and chronic regulation. Acute regulation is, in part, mediated through a fall in intracellular [H+]. This activates alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase and, ultimately, glutaminase. Chronic regulation involves induction of key enzymes, including, in the rat, glutaminase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase. During the acidosis of prolonged starvation, the kidneys' requirement for glutamine must be met from muscle proteolysis and thus becomes a drain on lean body mass. Serine synthesis occurs by two separate pathways: from glycine by the combined actions of the glycine cleavage enzyme and serine hydroxymethyltransferase and from gluconeogenic precursors using the phosphorylated-intermediate pathway. Both pathways are located in the cells of the proximal tubule. Conversion of glycine to serine is ammoniagenic and the activity of the glycine cleavage enzyme is increased in acidosis. According to some recent arguments, (Joyce in The evolution of morality, MIT Press, Cambridge, 2006; Ruse and Wilson in Conceptual issues in evolutionary biology, MIT Press, Cambridge, 1995; Street in Philos Studies 127: 109–166, 2006) if our moral beliefs are products of natural selection, then we do not have moral knowledge. In defense of this inference,
its proponents argue that natural selection is a process that fails to track moral facts. In this paper, I argue that our
having moral knowledge is consistent with, (a) the hypothesis that our moral beliefs are products of natural selection, and
(b) the claim (or a certain interpretation of the claim) that natural selection fails to track moral facts. I also argue that
natural selection is a process that could track moral facts, albeit imperfectly. I do not argue that we do have moral knowledge.
I argue instead that Darwinian considerations provide us with no reason to doubt that we do, and with some reasons to suppose
