A number of mutant strains of the green alga, Scenedesmus obliquus, when grown in the dark, accumulated ζ-carotene as their major carotenoid together with appreciable concentrations of phytoene and phytofluene. The phytoene was almost entirely the 15-cis isomer, and phytofluene was also present mainly as the 15-cis form, whereas the ζ-carotene could be separated into three isomers, predominantly all-trans ζ-carotene accompanied by the 15-cis and an unidentified cis isomer. All the ζ-carotene isomers, when illuminated in the presence of iodine, gave the same equilibrium mixture of stereo-isomers, including a product with unusual spectroscopic and chromatographic properties, which may be a cyclic compound. The pathway of carotenoid biosynthesis in S. obliquus is discussed. On illumination, most of the ζ-carotenic strains were killed, but PGI strain survived, due to the production of cyclic carotenoids with chromophores long enough to protect chlorophyll from photosensitized oxidation.  相似文献

Helicobacter pylori bacteria colonize the gastric mucosa of more than half of the world's human population and its infection may instigate a wide spectrum of gastric diseases in the host. At the moment, there is no vaccine against H. pylori, a microorganism recognized as a category 1 human carcinogen, and treatment is limited to antibiotic management. Pioneering antigenic studies carried out by Penner and co-workers, which employed homologous H. pylori antisera specific for cell-surface lipopolysaccharide (LPS), revealed the presence of six distinct H. pylori serotypes (O1 to O6). Subsequent studies have shown that H. pylori serotype O1 expressed LPS with lengthy O-chain polysaccharide (PS) composed of Lewis blood-group structures ('Lewis O-chains'), serotype O3 LPS produced 'Lewis O-chains' attached to a heptoglycan domain, serotype O4 LPS possessed LPS with glucosylated 'Lewis O-chains' and serotype O6 LPS expressed the heptoglycan domain capped by a short 'Lewis O-chain'. These LPSs were terminated at the reducing-end by a core oligosaccharide and lipid A of conserved structures. With the intent of formulating a multivalent H. pylori LPS-based vaccine, we are studying the structural variability of H. pylori cell-surface glycans. Here, we describe the novel LPS structure produced by H. pylori serotype O2 that differed markedly from the typical H. pylori 'Lewis O-chain' structures, in that its main component was an elongated PS composed of alternating 2-, and 3-monosubstituted alpha-D-Glcp residues [-->2)-alpha-D-Glcp-(1-->3)-alpha-D-Glcp-(1-->]n. These findings revealed the bio-molecular basis for the observed serospecificity of H. pylori serotype O2, and that this unique bacterial PS must be included in the formulation of a multivalent LPS H. pylori vaccine.  相似文献

Pigment distribution presages hydranth regeneration in the marine hydroidTubularia. We suggest that such a distribution could result from a reaction-diffusion system. A model system based on a practical reaction scheme is studied and spatial structures found which closely resemble this pigment distribution. Finite-amplitude spatial structures in reaction-diffusion systems are considered. Whereas in one spatial dimension the final structures are normally very similar to the transient patterns which emerge from a linear analysis, it is shown that in more than one dimension this is not necessarily the case. Alpha and beta adrenergic blocking drugs were administered, either singly or in combination, prior to a 3hr adrenaline infusion (2 microgram kg body wt-1 min-1)), Animals were premediated with either phenoxybenzamine (1 mg kg body wt-1 min-1). Phenoxybenzamine did not affect circulating adrenaline levels, but propranolol, either alone or in combination with phenoxybenzamine, resulted in a significant reduction in plasma adrenaline levels when compared with the control unblocked situation of adrenaline infusion without premedication. The results provide a possible explanation for the protective effect of combined adrenergic blockade in shock situations.  相似文献
