A model for several algal species which compete both for light and for nutrients, and which are also subject to settling and diffusion, is considered. The settling speeds and diffusion coefficients are assumed to be small, in a sense to be made precise later, and a singular perturbation argument is used. A mathematical model for aggregation in a single animal population is set up. It relies on two premises. First, there is an advantage to individuals in the population in grouping together, for example for social purposes or to reduce the risk of predation. Second, the intra-specific competition at a point depends not simply on the population density at that point but on the average population density near the point, since the animals may move to find resources. The model is then extended to competing populations, and inter-specific competition is also assumed to depend on an average population density. It is shown that the resulting aggregation may lead to the co-existence of populations one of which would otherwise be excluded by the other. This finding is discussed with regard to the Competitive Exclusion Principle.  相似文献

The extreme body sizes of megafishes associated with their high commercial values and recreational interests have made them highly threatened in their native range worldwide by human-induced impacts such as overexploitation. Meanwhile, some megafishes have been introduced outside of their native range. A notable example is the European catfish (Silurus glanis), one of the few siluriforms native to Eastern Europe. It is among the 20 largest freshwater fish worldwide, attaining a total length over 2.7 m and a documented mass of 130 kg. Its distinct phylogeny and extreme size imply many features that are rare among other European fish, including novel behaviours (massive aggregations, beaching), consumption of large bodied prey, fast growth rates, long lifespan, high fecundity, nest guarding and large egg sizes. The spread of the species is likely to continue due to illegal introductions, primarily for recreational angling, coupled with natural range extension associated with climate change. Here, the most recent knowledge on the current distribution and the ecology of the species are reviewed. A series of key research questions are identified that should stimulate new research on this intriguing, yet largely unknown, species and, more generally, on the ecology of freshwater invaders.  相似文献

The dynamics of oxygen delivery and utilization are examined in a variety of mitochondrial disorders during rest, exercise and post exercise. We used a non-invasive optical technique to measure the oxygen consumption in the exercising limb in normal subjects and 5 patients with cytochrome c oxidase deficiency. We also examined 6 patients with MELAS and MERRF syndrome. We measured near-infrared spectra of hemoglobin in the gastrocnemius muscle during treadmill exercise. Normal subjects demonstrated a sustained deoxygenation during exercise, indicating an efficient utilization of delivered oxygen. Patients with cytochrome c oxidase deficiency demonstrated consistent oxygenation during exercise indicating an under utilization of delivered oxygen. Patients with MELAS and MERRF syndrome showed similar under utilization of oxygen during exercise. Non-invasive tissue oximetry during exercise demonstrates specific abnormalities in a variety of mitochondrial disorders, indicating abnormal oxygen utilization, and will be a useful addition to the clinical investigation of such disorders. We previously showed that after seven generations of artificial selection of rats for running capacity, maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) was 12% greater in high-capacity (HCR) than in low-capacity runners (LCR). This difference was due exclusively to a greater O2 uptake and utilization by skeletal muscle of HCR, without differences between lines in convective O2 delivery to muscle by the cardiopulmonary system (QO2max). The present study in generation 15 (G15) female rats tested the hypothesis that continuing improvement in skeletal muscle O2 transfer must be accompanied by augmentation in QO2max to support VO2max of HCR. Systemic O2 transport was studied during maximal normoxic and hypoxic exercise (inspired PO2 approximately 70 Torr). VO2max divergence between lines increased because of both improvement in HCR and deterioration in LCR: normoxic VO2max was 50% higher in HCR than LCR. The greater VO2max in HCR was accompanied by a 41% increase in QO2max: 96.1 +/- 4.0 in HCR vs. 68.1 +/- 2.5 ml stpd O2 x min(-1) x kg(-1) in LCR (P < 0.01) during normoxia. The greater G15 QO2max of HCR was due to a 48% greater stroke volume than LCR. Although tissue O2 diffusive conductance continued to increase in HCR, tissue O2 extraction was not significantly different from LCR at G15, because of the offsetting effect of greater HCR blood flow on tissue O2 extraction. These results indicate that continuing divergence in VO2max between lines occurs largely as a consequence of changes in the capacity to deliver O2 to the exercising muscle.  相似文献

This study reports length–weight relationships for 10 species of fish encountered in the only two freshwater lakes wholly in the Rift Valley of Kenya, Naivasha and Baringo. In Lake Naivasha, none of the species analysed was native to the lake. Two were introduced species non‐native to East Africa (Micropterus salmoides, Cyprinus carpio), with three native to East Africa but not to the lake (Tilapia zillii, Oreochromis leucostictus, Barbus paludinosus). In Lake Baringo, all species were native (Oreochromis niloctictus baringoensis, Labeo cylindricus, Barbus intermedius autralis, Barbus lineomaculatus, Clarias gariepinus). Specimens were collected by gill netting in September 2004 and October 2005. With the exception of B. lineomaculatus, the b values in the relationship W = aLb were between 2.90 and 3.22.  相似文献
