A swarm of honeybees (Apis mellifera) is capable of selecting one nest-site when faced with a choice of several. We adapt classical mathematical models of disease, information and competing beliefs to such decision-making processes. We show that the collective decision may be arrived at without the necessity for any bee to make any comparison between sites.  相似文献

Phylogenetic dating with confidence intervals using mean path lengths   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The mean path length (MPL) method, a simple method for dating nodes in a phylogenetic tree, is presented. For small trees the age estimates and corresponding confidence intervals, calibrated with fossil data, can be calculated by hand, and for larger trees a computer program gives the results instantaneously (a Pascal program is available upon request). Necessary input data are a rooted phylogenetic tree with edge lengths (internode lengths) approximately corresponding to the number of substitutions between the nodes. Given this, the MPL method produces relative age estimates with confidence intervals for all nodes of the tree. With the age of one or several nodes of the tree being known from reference fossils, the relative age estimates induce absolute age estimates and confidence intervals of the nodes of the tree. The MPL method relies on the assumptions that substitutions occur randomly and independently in different sites in the DNA sequence and that the substitution rates are approximately constant in time, i.e., assuming a molecular clock. A method is presented for identification of the nodes in the tree at which significant deviations from the clock assumption occur, such that dating may be done using different rates in different parts of the tree. The MPL method is illustrated with the Liliales, a group of monocot flowering plants.  相似文献

The effects of spatial movements of infected and susceptible individuals on disease dynamics is not well understood. Empirical studies on the spatial spread of disease and behaviour of infected individuals are few and theoretical studies may be useful to explore different scenarios. Hence due to lack of detail in empirical studies, theoretical models have become necessary tools in investigating the disease influence in host-pathogen systems. In this paper we developed and analysed a spatially explicit model of two interacting social groups of animals of the same species. We investigated how the movement scenarios of susceptible and infected individuals together with the between-group contact parameter affect the survival rate of susceptible individuals in each group. This work can easily be applied to various host-pathogen systems. We define bounds on the number of susceptibles which avoid infection once the disease has died out as a function of the initial conditions and other model parameters. For example, once disease has passed through the populations, a larger diffusion coefficient for each group can result in higher population levels when there is no between-group interaction but in lower levels when there is between-group interaction. Numerical simulations are used to demonstrate these bounds and behaviours and to describe the different outcomes in ecological terms.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to explore the mechanism by which diabetes exaggerates cerebral stroke and its outcome. Since ischemia can be related to not only necrosis but apoptosis as well, we compared the development of apoptosis in STZ-diabetic rats and STZ-diabetic rats subjected to occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCA). 24-48 hr following MCA occlusion the animals were killed, the brain removed and prepared for evaluation by several indexes of apoptosis: nucleosomal DNA fragmentation, TUNEL staining, activation of caspase-3 and alteration in the expression of Bax and Bcl2. DNA fragmentation was not detected in the cortex of normal and diabetic animals, but was evident following MCA occlusion in diabetic rats. Bax expression was increased in the cortex of normal rats following MCA occlusion and this expression was further increased in the cortex of MCA occluded diabetic rats. Bcl2 expression was not changed in any of the groups. In the hippocampus, DNA fragmentation was not evident in control rats but was observed in diabetic rats. Ischemic injury did not enhance DNA laddering in diabetic animals. The expression of Bax was increased in diabetic rats but was not increased following MCA occlusion. Bcl2 expression was not changed by ischemia in any of the animal models. These data suggest that diabetes may enhance the development of stroke via increased cortical apoptotic activity but this was not additive in the hippocampus following ischemic injury.  相似文献

One of the biochemical "hallmarks" of malignancy is enhanced tumor glycolysis, which is primary due to the overexpression of glucose transporters (GLUTs) and the increased activity of mitochondria-bound hexokinase in tumors. Easy methods for assessing glucose utilization in vitro and in vivo should find widespread application in biological and biomedical studies, as illustrated by the adoption of FDG PET imaging in medicine. We have recently synthesized a new NIR fluorescent pyropheophorbide conjugate of 2-deoxyglucose (2DG), Pyro-2DG, as a GLUT-targeted photosensitizer. In this study, we have evaluated the in vivo uptake of Pyro-2DG and found that Pyro-2DG selectively accumulated in two tumor models, 9L glioma in the rat and c-MYC-induced mammary tumor in the mouse, compared to surrounding normal muscle tissues at a ratio of about 10:1. By simultaneously performing redox ratio and fluorescence imaging, a high degree of correlation between the PN/(Fp+PN) redox ratio, where PN denotes reduced pyridine nucleotides (NADH) and Fp denotes oxidized flavoproteins, and the Pyro-2DG uptake was found in both murine tumor models, indicating that Pyro-2DG could serve as an extrinsic NIR fluorescent metabolic index for the tumors. The fact that only a low level of correlation was observed between the redox ratio and the uptake of Pyro-acid (the free fluorophore without the 2-deoxyglucose moiety) supports the hypothesis that Pyro-2DG is an index of the mitochondrial status (extent of PN reduction) of a tumor.  相似文献

Immune responses rely on an intricate system of adhesion molecules to coordinate the homing and retention of lymphocytes in both secondary lymphoid tissues and at sites of infection. To define the events associated with pulmonary immune responses, the expression of endothelial addressins and integrins on T cells was analyzed during Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. In infected lung, expression of endothelial VCAM-1, but not mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1, was up-regulated from 4 wk postinfection and persisted to at least 12 wk. Subsequent analysis of the corresponding integrins expressed on lung CD4+ and CD8+ T cells revealed an accumulation of beta1high/beta7-/low, and to a lesser extent beta7high, integrin-expressing T cells during infection. Examination of integrin heterodimers showed that while alpha4 integrin was predominantly expressed on beta1high/beta7-/low cells, alphaE integrin was primarily associated with beta7high. The majority of activated/memory T cells recruited during infection expressed high levels of beta1 integrin and undetectable or low levels of beta7 integrin. These T cells were capable of producing IFN-gamma, a cytokine crucial for controlling M. tuberculosis infection. Rapid expansion of beta1high, beta7-, and beta7high T cell populations in the lung upon secondary mycobacterial infection indicates the participation of these populations in the acquired immune response to the infection. Furthermore, treatment of infected mice with mAb to alpha4 or alpha4beta7 integrin led to a reduction in lymphocytes and increase in granulocytes in the pulmonary infiltrate. These results reveal a crucial role for adhesion molecules in the generation of an effective pulmonary immune response to M. tuberculosis infection.  相似文献

Central administration of neuropeptide Y (NPY) produces anxiolytic-like behavioral effects in rat models of anxiety. Because previous evidence has suggested a relationship between NPY and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) in the brain, we have focused on the interaction of these neuropeptide systems in emotional responsiveness to stressful stimuli. Intracerebroventricular administration of CRF produced a marked response suppression in an operant incremental shock conflict paradigm. NPY [(1 microg, intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.)] significantly antagonized the response-suppressing effects of CRF (0.75 microg, i.c.v.) on punished responding in the conflict test at doses that produced little or no behavioral effect when administered alone. Central administration of the CRF antagonist [D-Phe(12), Nle(21,38),C(alpha) MeLeu(37)]CRF (D-Phe CRF(12-41)) alone did not alter punished or unpunished responding in the conflict test. However, pretreatment with the CRF antagonist before a subthreshold dose of NPY (1 microg, i.c.v.) produced a significant potentiation of the release of punished responding relative to NPY alone and untreated controls. NPY also antagonized the "anxiogenic-like" behavioral effects of CRF in the elevated plus maze. These findings support the hypothesis that NPY and CRF may reciprocally modulate an animal's behavioral response to stressful stimuli.  相似文献

We developed a device that delivers fluid through a catheter at a constant rate and can be used in conscious animals to solve a variety of problems. For example, this device can be used for delivering drugs and maintaining intravascular catheter patency. The device provides infusions at low flows (1.0-1.5 ml/day), so that experimental agents may be administered with minimal volume loading of the rat. Arterial and venous catheter patency is maintained by infusion of heparinized saline through indwelling catheters attached to the device. The catheters exit from the rat in the intrascapular area and are routed through a protective spring to the device, which is suspended above the cage. The catheters may be attached to pressure transducers, blood may be sampled, and injections or infusions may be made without disturbing the rat. Because the device is self-contained, it can be suspended by a fluid-free swivel that rotates through 360 degrees, providing minimal restraint. The device has been used successfully to measure arterial and central venous blood pressures in two studies using rats.  相似文献
